I painted our bedroom ceiling with Dulux Ceiling White Never Miss (should be called Never use), as most of the other reviews have noted it gives off a stench which is intolerable, it was so bad my wife and I had to sleep in one of our bedrooms downstairs as it was not possible to sleep with the fumes from the paint.
I have painted with many products for over 60 years in the United Kingdom, South Africa and here in New Zealand, and this is absolutely the worse paint ever manufactured. How Dulux have got away with selling this product is beyond comprehension and they should be sued for damages as a result.

Hi, I’ve recently purchased 10 litres of ceiling white + kitchen and bathroom. I painted my lounge and bedroom and had the most severe allergic reactions, my mouth was burnt and swollen and my eyes extremely puffy and itchy. I thought it was a problem with an old oil heater and have take steps to have it removed. Now 6 weeks later the first two affected rooms have dissipated some and I have used the same paint to do my kitchen. Again the intensely storming bile chemical smells and immense allergic reaction. My house is unlovable and I have literally ripped my house apart trying to find the initial smells. Not good enough dulux. Thins needs to be fixed. After reading reviews it seems it’s a long standing problem. I have severe allergies.

Hi we have painted our ceilings with Dulux and are finding the stench overwhelming. What is the solution? I can’t handle the stink and it seems to be getting worse not better! :(

2 answers

The smell will go eventually.. painting in damp or humid conditions means that the paint will take longer to dry, hence the smell will linger.

Hello, we have recently painted using this product and have noticed (like many others) a distinctive smell that comes and goes but does get worse when it’s hotter.
I was about to do another coat but after reading these reviews, I’m a tad nervous.
I still have the original tin that I used.
Is there any remedy to remove the smell / odour ?

onions n plenty of fresh air, the smell eventually went

Hi Shauni - I painted in freezing cold weather. The paint actually took 3 days to completely dry and yes it did still smell a bit. I continually left the windows open to let the air circulate through and popped ceiling fans on. We have had warm weather since and no smell at all, I think fresh circulating air always works the best in the end. There was an issue with some of their earlier paint batches just make sure yours isn't one of those - give them a ring to make sure.

Hi,
I used Dulux ceiling white never miss in the room of my nursery. An odorous smell began to permeate my house 2 days after application. I had to keep the house open for a week even during the cold nights in June due to headaches caused by the smell. And it was further aired out for the next fortnight.

I cannot detect the odor at the moment however I have been made very much aware that this paint, sold from Bunnings, with a white lid has issues.

I am 35 wks pregnant & would like a Dulux representative to confirm if this paint is hazadous? Will this stench reoccur in the summer as many reviewers have commented?

Is it safe for a baby to be in? My paint can has a white lid and was purchase end of May 2018 from Bunnings, Ballina NSW.

I used Dulux Never Miss and found it gives a very bad foul odour. It causes breathing problems, nausea, headace, eye irritation. Application of the Shellac Odour Blocker does not help. I want to know what chemical in the paint is causing this problem? Why is Dulux and Bunnings continuing to sell defective product that causes so many issues? What are the the long term risks of being exposed to this Chemical? I understand there could be excessive Biocides which can be very dangerous.

theres definately something in it, lucky for us we did not paint the main part of the house just a day room used mainly in warmer weather, its about time that Dulux came clean, i spoke with them and every question they asked was loaded with a get out, kind of fell flat when they asked where i lived quote "oh queensland, thats because of the humidity" yer sure in winter ...

Dulux are trying to hide the problem. I believe it is some very dangerous Biocides in the paint in excessive amounts. They are trying to cover up and have got their legal department involved. The legal Department relies on lies and false reports. They also refuse to say who is sending the emails. When asked to provide reports as a sworn statement or from a independent lab of my choice they go silent. They threaten us and try to shut us up and prevent us from telling about the problem to others. The odour is so bad and the only way to get rid of it is to remove the ceilings as far as I know. Dulux has not helped us or even advised us on how to deal with the odour that infected our soft furnishings, curtains, carpets, sofa, blankets etc. I have complained to their [Name Removed] but he has also not bothered to help and ignored us. These people have no moral or ethical standards in my opinion and totally Un- Australian. We go to help strangers if they need help. Dulux and [Name Removed] are turning their heads and ignoring customers suffering from their faulty product in my opinion.

We need to know what the chemical is and what are the long term effects of this chemical are. It could be like asbestos. Dulux should come clean and tell all affected customers what it is
but instead they want to pay little money and get us to sign that we have no more rights against them. I am left with no option but to take legal action against Dulux and am in the process of preparing the application to the Court. Please let me have your contact details. Although we have plenty of evidence against Dulux your support
would be very helpful. My whole home smelled so bad pungent rotton odour and I had to remove the affected ceiling . Our lives have been badly affected and members of my family are having health problems caused by the faulty paint. Dulux have complete disregard.

I was told by the local mitre 10 that dulux is not making that paint any more, but you will need a can of smoke and odour blocker (shellac ) a a tin of professional ceiling white All other ceiling white has anti mould in it that is what is causing the smell, Dulux is quite aware of the problem give them a call and they might sent you a painter and do it for nothing

Hi Tim,
I had the same issue with "DULUX Ceiling White" (Blueish with white lid can rather than the pink "Nevermiss" can). The problem was the same however. I bought my paint from Bunnings on 31-Aug-17 and I used it the next day and had an awful smell after a few days. As we were going away for about six weeks, I did nothing about it and the smell was just as bad when we got back. About 10 weeks after the initial painting, I went to Bunnings, and when I was discussing the issue with them, they advised me that Dulux had recalled all their ceiling paint and that I should contact Dulux (Ph: 132525).

Dulux (via Bunnings) provided me a can of spirit based shellac called "DULUX PRECISION Stain, Smoke & Odour Blocker" which is claimed to be a "Professional grade shellac" on the tin with clean-up using Methylated Spirits and also a can from a new batch of "DULUX Ceiling White" but with a silver lid. (The point about the lid colour is that at least at Bunnings, Dulux replaced all the ceiling paint and if the lid is silver, it is supposed to be fine). I was happy to have a supposed solution and repainted the ceiling myself on 22-Nov-17. (One coat of the shellac and two coats of the new ceiling paint).

Unfortunately, a few days after the normal paint smell subsided, the old smell re-emerged. I gave it six days curing time before contacting Dulux and they arranged a professional painter to repaint the ceiling with a different sealer and "Professional Ceiling Paint". They re-painted the ceiling on 12-Dec-17.

Unfortunately, a few days later the smell came back. It turns out that paint-shop supplied the professional painters the wrong sealer ("DULUX PRECISION Stain & Mould Blocker") instead of a water based "DULUX PRECISION Stain & Odour Blocker". So a simple human error meant that we were no better off.

Yesterday (18-Dec-17), I again contacted Dulux and after they discovered the incorrect paint had been supplied to the painter, immediately set about organising to get the correct paint and a painter to come and re-paint the ceiling for a third time which they have been able to arrange for tomorrow. I believe the sealer will be the water based "DULUX PRECISION Stain & Odour Blocker" but of course I will know more after tomorrow (20-Dec-17) and based on the last two re-paints, the smell starts to become apparent by about day 2 or 3.

I would contact the Dulux help line (132525 Option 2) and tell them you are calling about the faulty ceiling paint. They will want the batch number etc so have the can with you when you call them.

Regards

Are there ridges (areas where the paint looks thicker) ??
If so, you're probably loading your roller sleeve too heavy and/or not spreading the paint enough. I use sheep skin sleeves in long nap (13mm I think) and I find that one load cover a bit over 1 m2. Those sleeves are expensive ($25 to 30 for a 260mm) but they are just the best I've found and, if you look after them, they last forever.(Almost)
Roll your edges out so you can overlap them when you get back to that spot, without creating ridges. But keep your edges WET !!
Best I can tell you without seeing it.

Hi Eugene,
When I used the product, I didn't get a hit of fumes but I was painting a living room that was quite airy. My experience was the poor coverage over a large area, I'd contact your dulux agent and ask. I did get a very honest answer about the drying agent so maybe you will too. Good luck.
