I have a 2009 1.4 auto, which I bought only recently. The owner's handbook suggested 150,000km or 8 years. My car was under the 150k but well over the 8 years, so I booked it in to have the timing belt done. Unfortunately my car is running poorly after the change, and there was a long delay for new bolts for the cam sprocket bolts which are single-use only and didn't come with the belt kit. To make the process quicker and cheaper, don't change the camshaft seals unless the mechanic says they are leaking.

Try replacing the speedo sensor unit. This seems to be a common fault with Fiestas and Festivas. Engine cutting out, but restarting immediately with key, also seems to occur often with this speedo sensor fault. Plenty of info on Google about this problem. Ford genuine part is $200+ plus fitting. An e-Bay guy in Melbourne is selling them for $12.20 incl free shipping ! Worth a try, before committing to an expensive Ford Dealer appraisal. The unit sits on the gearbox, and can be fitted without having to lift the car up.

You do not mention which engine you have. The 1.6 and 2.0 litre appear to run different arrangements.

I've not played with my fan belt yet (2.0 litre) but according to the factory service manual (can be found free online with a bit of searching) the 1.6 does not have a tensioner. The belts come with a special tool which allows the belt to be stretched onto the pulleys. Sounds like fun.

The 2 litre engine uses a tensioner and can apparently be adjusted in the normal way. Their diagram shows the tensioner sitting below the alternator. I just went and had a look at mine and although I can see the tensioner, I have no idea how you'd get to it easily. All the pulleys at the front of the engine are very close to the chassis rail. I'm sure there's a way but it'd have to involve taking off some plastic guards and getting at it from under the car.

Not sure, but maybe worth getting an Auto elect to have a look & perhaps install a second hand one from an Auto recycler!
