Honda UMS425 Bent Shaft Questions & Answers (page 2 of 2)
The most common action needed by an owner is to change the line, why there is no detail of this in the manual is beyond belief.Where does Honda have this detail that can be downloaded or where can I contact someone to post the information which should have have been in the manual in the first place? I have got the same problem that Paul wrote about above. My email is [email protected]. Can you let me have the required information. Thanks
Hi Albo,
Did a quick internet search and located the user manual at:. http://www.manualguru.com/honda/ums425u/owners-manual
The trimmer Line, as with most trimmers I've tried, is a pain to change. The reason I originally bought a Stihl was because it had a beautifully simple wind-on Line feature. Unfortunayely, I had extreme difficulty starting it, so traded it for the Honda.
I have seen trimmer head replacements that hold 3 or 4 loops of trimmer Line and bought one for my old Homelife trimmer. I'm not sure if there is one available for the Honda - if anyone knows of one, please let me know. On the Homelife it made Line replacement a simple and short process.
Regards
By the way, I found the following video on YouTube which shows how to thread New Line on your trimmer head.

Hope it helps.
Thanks IanKen. The manual doesn't give you any info on changing the line but the youtube video does. The video is very good. Thanks
On the ums look at the arrow on the guard from the top . That is the direction of the spin - clockwise. When you load the cord go anti-clockwise. Just remember the bump head side is the bottom.
I have just purchased a Honda W4 Bump Head but the thread on my UMS425 is too narrow to couple to the bump head - any suggestions?
If memory serves me correctly you should be using a 2mm diameter string. My dealer told me that the star shaped nylon string is better cutting and stronger than the round variety. The only problem with nearly all strings I've tried is that they tend to jam on occasion if you are not really careful about winding it on. There are after market cutting heads that use straight cord. They are easier to thread and tend to last longer between changes. Check that they won't upset the balance of you trimmer and, thus shorten it's life expectancy.
Sorry, IanKen. I think my question was misunderstood. I have purchased a new bump head which has a larger internal threaded diameter than the threaded bolt on the end of the bent shaft which affixes to the bump head. I wanted to know how to fix this anomaly - is there a coupling that can be placed over the threaded bolt to expand its diameter? BTW I currently have square shaped nylon thread which works brilliantly - last longer and cuts infinitely better.
Can you repair a frozen gear box on a Honda Ums 425u whipper snipper?
Sorry, I don't know about this one. My guess is that you probably need to have a mower mechanic look at this. My Honda is a curved model which, I think, has a cable drive. I assume yours is a straight shaft which has a gear set at it's base. It may be cheaper to buy a new gear set.check with Honda.
bent shaft doesnt have a gearbox.
How to replace the cutting cord? Cannot locate my handbook.
My machine has a bump feed head. First remove outer case by pushing in opposite side tabs. Cut about 2 metres of cord give or take. You'll find two small holes on inner cord holder. Feed cord through one hole to inside and then out other hole from inner holder to out. Even up cord coming from either hole. Wind one cord clockwise round one side of inner holder and other cord clockwise round other side of cord holder. Leave about 100mm hanging out and don't let go. There are slots to hook cord onto while placing inner holder back into casing. Once in pull cords into holes where cord normally flows. Still try not to let go. Replace outer case making sure to align properly and secure. Run motor and tap to extend if needed. Only trick is both ends wound around same direction.

Just bought the UMS425 Bent Shaft Trimmer - but can't work out how to refill the trimmer head with a new cord? Any YouTube links or advice on how the head comes apart to refill/replace the cord?
hard to explain, easy to watch. google restring UMS425.
1. squeeze the head half way between each line outlet on both sides and remove the head cover.
2. pull out the spool. if it wont come out give it a 1/8th turn and slide it out.
3. take 3 arm lengths of 2.7mm line and half it, then pinch where half way is.
4. hold spool in right hand with bump facing to your left, and hook the halved line over the middle divider in the spool.
5. wind the line on in an anticlockwise direction.
6. with say 100mm of line left lock one line into the notch on the top of the spool. unwind the 2nd piece of line to the opposite side of the spool and lock it in.
7. slip spool back in to the head with the locked line about 10mm BEFORE the notches, push spool down and turn into linw with the notches on the spool and the outlets on the head.
8. pull each piece of line out into place and pop the head back on.
9. Abracadabra
10. Do the google bit like i advised at the start.
Thanks for the response.
Very helpful but simple once you know! Cord length varies with the cord diameter and I was advised not to wind too much cord onto the spool - to avoid jamming. Winding the cord onto the spool requires a little practice, but after one or two rewinds its all good.
Happy with choice to buy Honda - easy to start and the head not spinning when you let it idle is a good feature.
Why have they got lh andright hand arrows on the spool
Hi! My 4 stroke bent shaft Honda line trimmer leaks fuel out of the cap only when operated. When it's stored away it doesn't leak at all. Took it back and they tried a new cap then replaced the tank but same problem. I left it with them and they said the thread on the tank is designed to let air in as the engine uses the fuel so a vacuum isn't created in the tank. If you use the trimmer in a position where the fuel rests up against the cap, like when I do the edges, then it will inevitably start to weep out and leak. They said it's less of a problem if you only use half a tank, or they can rotate the shaft so that it's in a position where the fuel isn't resting against the cap when you use it. Does this sound like reliable info or am I getting shafted? It seems to me that the fuel tank is getting pressurized when I use the trimmer and forcing the fuel out of the seal in the petrol cap.
Seems odd to me. Mine does sometimes build up pressure if it is a hot day, which seems pretty natural. But in 2 years of use, I have never had a leak from around the cap, and it is natural for the machine to be used in any and every position possible. If your service man is a Honda dealer I would seriously consider emailing Honda directly. Here is their page: http://powerequipment.honda.com.au/Contact. My opinion is that if you aren't happy with the performance of your unit, keep pushing for it to be fixed to your satisfaction.
It is a honda dealer. They said that they'd rotate the shaft and ill pick it up tomorrow but I'm not confident its going to be any better so emailed honda in advance. I think that even if i hold it perfectly still in a prone position with the fuel away from the cap its gonna pressurise the tank and keep coming out the thread. We'll see tomorrow! Getting pretty annoyed with it though. Thanks for replying.
Yeh mine does this too, but also leaks when sitting. I replace the rubbers but it leaks a few weeks later. It's a bad design. Honda have replied and said they fixed it with the new caps but they didn't. They won't help me at all. I spend $18 per month replacing fuel cap rubbers. Shame on Honda!
