We own a 2008 2.2 TDI manual which now has 120,000 kms on the clock. We are now wary of taking it on any long trips, especially anywhere off the track. Problems ( so far ) have included failure of the flywheel/clutch which took it off the road for a week. Then each of the rear doors stopped functioning - at separate times - again two long trips to our dealer ( 80km each way ) to repair on each occasion. Then each of the rear wheel bearing groups failed - again separately - and again two visits to the dealer on each occasion. Everything has been...Read more
fixed under warranty, but at some cost to us in inconvenience and time. The dealer has been pretty good, but Arrgh! Today, one of the rear doors refuses to latch closed ! We've had enough. Love driving it, but certainly will not buy again, and would never recommend to anyone we know. Great economy. Comfortable. Good performance and roadholding. Cruise control is not the best. Hard to set at a chosen speed, and doesn't cope well with up and down hills.2 comments
Have a 2006 hyundai santa fe, 70,000 miles clutch and flywheel failed, owned from new, hyundai did not want to know and it cost us e2000 to fix, will never buy again as was always fully serviced with hyundai. It is a known problem.

Badge snobbery proven unfounded - Love it
What a fantastic car! I have to admit when my wife and I first went looking for a new car, badge snobbery meant we ignored the Santa Fe. We were wrong to do so. An engineer friend of ours bought one and gave us his to try, and I went straight to the dealer to look at ordering our new car, a 2011 Santa Fe SLX. It fits three child seats across the back, and the child restraints are in the back of the seats, which means you can still use the sixth and seventh seat or have all of the boot space free for your gear. Tows our camper trailer wonderf...Read more
ully and does so all day, temperature needle never moves and the fuel guage is slow to move. It's lighter, got more power and more torque than much more expensive 4WD's (oh what are you feeling about that!) and is more capable on fire trails than I would have given it credit for, though it is not a true offroad vehicle. Tight interior is free of squeaks, lots of little storage spots, including his and her sunglass holders. It's clear someone has thought about the design of this car. Sales staff excellent, all the accessories I ordered were done and at a good price. Powerful with well matched auto, nice to drive and tow with, excellent pricing, comfortable on long hauls, extremely fuel efficient, clever design features, performs well on rutted out roads and fire trails, excellent turning circle, looks great from the front. Looks out of date at the back, dash lights are too bright (even on lowest setting), front headrests painful, it is limited in true off road conditions. Not much though.Similar opinion? Great value for money and reliable.
I own a 2009 SX 2.2 litre turbo diesel auto. I sell Toyota's and I must say for the money I don't think you could buy a better turbo diesel. I never thought I would own a Hyundai but as anyone who has driven one in the last few years will say they certainly have come a long way. The quality, reliability and economy is excellent. I get a constant 800km's from a full tank and have had no problems with it for 42000km's. I have found the after sales service to be excellent at the three dealers i've been to and have had four items replaced under war...Read more
ranty for cosmetic reasons that I didn't even request. Series one was between 06 to Dec 08, there was an upgrade from Dec 08 which gave the SX all of the safety features that was missing in the previous series and you also got a much nicer woodgrain and iPod connectivity. The pick of the bunch is the new R series which is the current series as you get the new six speed automatic with the new 2.2 turbo diesel which has an incredible 147kw of power and fuel economy in the sevens. If you are looking at the first series turbo diesel make sure to check whether its a 4 speed or 5 speed auto as they made both and sometimes the seller doesn't know which one they have got. You can check by turning the car on and putting the gearbox in manual mode and shift up the gears until it doesn't go up any further and it will end on 4th or 5th gear. Obviously the 5 speed is the better choice. Warranty on the all series except the current series is 5 years or 150000kms and not unlimited kms as that is only available on the current series. I hope this help's. Price, Reliability, Economy and after sales service. A little noisy, seats not too supportive and some cheap feeling plastics but minor compared to the positives.

A myriad of issues
I bought a brand new santa fe plate rated July 2011. The first time I needed the aircon there was a rush of water on the passenger side and the aircon stopped working. I spent two hours with the mechanics who discovered that the aircon had not been installed correctly at the factory and this had blown out the fan motor. I now need to wait at least 3 weeks for another fan motor to arrive from Korea. This means that in the pouring rain I am unable to demist any of the windows in my car. This is an obvious safety issue. So despite buying brand new...Read more

So, unless i want to take my children out in an unsafe vehicle I am restricted to places we can cycle or walk to. With three small children in the pouring rain this is definitely proving challenging. While I have contacted Hyundai about this issue, they have failed to provide a satisfactory response. Spacious Reliability and safety, after sales service are all questionable2 comments

Would have been a lovely car if it wasn't for the gearbox trouble...
I own but not drive a December 2010 2.2 Diesel Auto in the Elite trim range. This is my second Santa Fe, of the new shape. The previous one, a 2009 SLX Auto was sold due to a divorce..... Darn…. OK the car: I really like the car, it is better equipped than a RAV4, 100X neater than a X-Trail or Territory and much cheaper than a Prado, although one has to admit the 4x4 capability is weak, and only for gravel roads.
However.... my car developed a gearbox problem. While cruising along at 100km/h it would jump out of top gear into 4th with a lou...Read more
d BANG and stick there. You can select any gear with the gear level, but it remains stuck in 4th. The only remedy is to stop, calm all passengers due to the hell of a noise, switch of the engine and start again, and then it is fine. This started with about 12,000km on the clock. DC Motors in Rockhampton could not and can not find the problem. The gear-drop occurrence was about every 600km, then it grew progressively worse to about every time you drive. The car has been with the dealer for over six weeks in total, it is there at the moment. The car has done about 20,000km. Initially I did not want to make a noise about the repairs not being sorted out, but having to rely on lifts, public transport and borrowing friends’ cars got up my nose. DC Motors finally, last week, gave me a loan car, an Elantra, which is fine. Thanks to their Service Manager Tracey. The Santa Fe ticks all boxes in my mind for a day to day car. It is comfortable, safe, it is quiet and it has space. It is also extremely economical (when on the road). The gearbox issue and the absolute lack of care from Hyundai Motors (I have send them emails and emails, and to a certain extent the dealer) has soured my ownership experience completely. At present I want to just sell it, but, with a car less than a year old, you loose thousands of dollars. I fume at the thought of such a nice car being spoiled by this reoccurring fault, and no-one seem to be able to point to the source of the problem. With Christmas coming I feel like, once they get it running I’ll trade it in on a second-hand Prado and cut my losses I close and say, if it wasn’t for this gearbox problem, I would whole heatedly recommend the Santa Fe to everyone. Space / safety / value for money / built quality / economy / comfort / jumping gearbox.... jumping gearbox....jumping gearbox...2 comments

Santa Fe SLX CRDi: I bought this car when the diesel models were first released in November 2006 and have never regretted the purchase for a moment! The interior is well fitted out with front and rear airconditioning vents and both MP3 and tape decks and the seats are fully adjustable as is the steering wheel. The passengers are well catered for with arm rests and leg room that is comfortable for even someone over six feet. There are 7 seats but two are completed hidden under the luggage compartment floor but are easy to adjust when needed and ...Read more
all the seats fold completely flat for sleeping or just when the extra space is needed for luggage and that has happened on the odd occasion. The interior is quiet when running and the turbo takes over when overtaking other vehicles or road trains and ensures that there is no loss of power whatever. When I bought the car the advertising sticker showed 8.2litres per 100kms but I thought this would only happen on a perfect road with a tailwind but have been pleasently surprised to see that achieved on a regular basis and even when fully laden and I mean laden! I live 600kms along the Great Central Road which is corrugated and definitely 4wd and made even more difficult in the rainy season but the car makes the journey as stress free as possible leaving only the stray camels to watch out for. The first trip I did started from where I live in the desert and ventured across to Yulara and then through Alice Springs and onto Threeways before heading east to the coast and the Daintree. With many stops along the way I reached Melbourne before again returning to the west across the Nullabor to Perth for a brief stay. Before too long I was on my way to Kalgoorlie, Laverton and finally after again traversing the Central Road I arrived safely home. In all I had covered 18,000 kms and even though I did some long stretches of driving at times at no time did I feel achy or uncomfortable. Even on the dirt road I still get 8.3litres per 100klm! I make regular trips back to Perth in every school holidays and the car has now done 25,000kms and when I was in the process of purchasing the car many people told me I was crazy not to stick with a Toyota but for luxury, manouverability and handling I would have to go a long way to beat the Sante Fe Diesel. There were also people supposedly in the know who told me the factory fitted tyres would not last a short journey but I have yet to get a puncture and they hold well to the road in wet and dry conditions. The fuel tank is ample and holds as much as 794 kilometres of fuel and this means that I can refill in Leonora and not have to worry about running out of fuel as I still have in excess of 100kms in the tank when I have arrived home. As a concession to the red dust and extreme heat, that is a part of life out here for most of the year, I added rubber mats and paint and upholstery protection along with a darker tint and so far that has given all the protection that is required. I am still finding little things that I had not discovered before, such as child proof locks that came to light when I could not open the rear door from the inside. I now know all about them after leaving a little red faced from the service centre in Kalgoorlie when they had been pointed out to me. (I don't have small children so it's not a feature I had enquired about!) To say I am happy with my vehicle is an understatement as I really love the look, the handling and have not yet found anything that I would change and I would be more than happy to recommend it to anyone!! As my first diesel motor car, I can't believe what I've missed all these years. The torque of the motor reminds me of driving my old 351 V8, but I'm only in a 2.2 4 cylinder car. The trick to getting the most out of this torque is to ensure that you are in the power band between 1800rpm and 4000rpm. Any other rpm is a waste of time. The diesel is unbelievably good and I can't see me ever buying petrol again. If you intend towing in your small to medium SUV, you can not go past this car. aptiva) and none have the versatility and practicality of this vehicle. I looked for every reason possible not to buy a Hyundai as I am a keen Toyota and Nissan owner, but after doing extensive research (Overlander Magazine's 4WD-OTY shortlist) I could not choose anything else for the money (36K driveaway!). Early indications also are that the diesel model is holding its resale value better than any of the opposition. Finally, the Hyundai service centre and warranty (8 years with dealership) are second to none and I can not fault anything on the car. I have done over 10 000km and I don’t have one squeak, rattle or complaint. Hyundai have come along way in a very short time. In my manual SX diesel model I am returning fuel economy less than 6 litres per 100k on the highway and average 8.5 litres per 100k during exclusive city driving. Fit and Finish inside and out is excellent and as good as any Japanese car that I have owned. Good dash layout and the iridescent blue lighting at night gives a quality look. Interior space is excellent having shopped with my 190cm son as the minimum bench mark. . No complaints with the steering, handling or brakes. The 4wd system engages as necessary and without any obvious intrusion. Excellent torque when driving over soft sand and reasonable ground clearance through sand tracks. The 4wd lock works well when driving up loose and rutted dirt tracks but is not necessary whilst on soft sand as the drive distribution to all four wheels seems instantaneous when required in these circumstances. The hidden storage bin in the rear compartment on all 5 seat models is very good and adequately stores my tools, tow ball, 4wd recovery gear and then still has ample room for hiding valuables. The look and finish of the base model is far superior to that offered by the opposition. As my SX model is a manual I occasionally stall the vehicle in certain circumstances. This was particularly so when I first bought the car and was getting use to the vagueness of the manual gear box. At first it was difficult to know whether you were in first or third when moving from stationary and this can also happen after selecting reverse and then attempting to move into first gear. However I soon came to terms with this and rarely have this problem now. The extreme quietness of the diesel engine from inside the cabin also contributes to occasionally remaining in an incorrect gear when driving along. Small price to pay for such quietness however! The lack of low ration gearing can also cause some concern in the manual model when moving from stationary on very soft sand. Extra revs are needed to ensure that you don’t stall the vehicle when letting out the clutch but this can cause you to dig holes if you’re tyre pressure is too high. The Auto would be the pick in this case. The lack of specification options in the Santa Fe is my biggest gripe. You can not make one single model specification change across the range, except when choosing manual or auto in the base SX model. I would have preferred the SLX model with the extra airbags and ESP but I did not want 7 seats and I was keen on the manual for its superior fuel economy, but these were not an option available to me.Similar opinion? It took me a long time and a lot of research to settle on the car and we are absolutely in love with our Santa Fe. We have the 2010 SLX Auto. You will not find a more powerful, more fuel efficient, better value for money car in this price range.
I cannot sing it's praises enough.
Absolutely everything. Exellent drive, great power, good fuel consumption, great looks. 145KW and 467NM!!! Hooray for Diesel! 6th and 7th seats are some of the best avaiable - compared with other SUV's which have token kiddy seats.
I struggle to find negatives about it, but some really really minor ones are: - The key and remote on the SLX is a bit cheap (like it belongs to a hatchback) - The radio/aircon display is a bit dated- No rear rolling cargo-blind

f people on board indicating ground clearance is good. Want a vehicle with all the features you could ever wish for? Then get the Highlander again for half the price of the top spec Toyota Prado. Yeh, yeh I know, not apples with apples. But as most 4x4s do not go off road and if you don't save your money. Everything. The diesel engine is a cracker. 145Kw from just 2.2 Lts and current fuel economy is just below 8Lts per 100Ks. It pulls like a train, the six speed auto is smooth. Quiet in the cabin and the turning circle is good as well when compared to my 2000 Prado. Wide body has plenty of space for all. Virtually nothing. If anything, the front seats lack support under your legs because lifting the height of the seat only raises the rear of the seat and not the front as well. Hyundai need to change this. The electric seats in the higher spec model/s does allow adjustment of both front and back and would be more comfortable. Mind you, the base model's seats are not horrible by any means. When the third row of seats are in use there is little space left in the back fro eskys etc.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
