    Great drive

    published

I recently sold my Commander after 6years. It was a 2006 limited diesel. It had done 220k when I sold it, 170 of that by me. I had a few minor issues with it such as auto wipers malfunctioning. I towed a 1500 kg boat regulary and must say that it did it with ease and in comfort. The AWD certainly gave it a sure footed feel and a lot more confidence when towing through twisties or in the wet. It was a lot better to drive and heaps more go than my previous vehicle, a GU Patrol. Fuel consumption wasn't great but it's a big car. minuses would be parts cost and availalability and as they are getting on in k's parts cost will become relevant. Would have highly recommended a few years ago but parts/electronics costs would now be a concern.

2006 Commander with 3.0 Mercedes Diesel and NAG1 transmission. Great tow vehicle, still economical with 2 tonne hanging off the back. No major problems at 195,000kms (approx 125,000 miles). Runs like new..still got another 100,000 kms (60,000 miles) at least in it.
The Commander started with a number of stupid problems..software not quite right, sun roof drain tubes blocked etc etc. Once you are past that and you use quality oil of the required spec and you service them they will last for 300-400,00 kms.

    Good until it self ignites

    published

Loved my Commander but it self-ignited and I had to hop out and see my beloved car burn.
Fiat Chrysler (Sydney) were concerned regarding the cause (not found) and lent me a hire car until I got back on the road. At first they gave me the hint that they would be forthcoming and get me back into a Jeep, but how wrong was I. Adelaide CityJeep just didn't want to know me and were of no help. I went through the trauma of seeing my car going up in smoke, losing good value, having to fork out more from my pension and not getting back into a brand I liked.
Your loss Fiat Chrysler, I am now seeking legal advice on my next step !!!

    Worst Purchase Ever

    published

Purchased a 2008 Commander with 113k kms on it. Beautiful to drive. Rear main seal dumped the oil in less than 3 hrs. Sent it back to the yard for warranty work and was told the rear main had been done a few days before picking it up. So 2 x rear main seals in less than 10 days. When completed, the airbag light came on. Has now been at a Jeep dealer for 3 months and neither Jeep Australia nor Jeep USA can work out what the problem is. Dealer is now refunding our money.
We traded a 1995 Cherokee on this. The Cherokee was 20 yrs old with 212k kms on it and had never let us down, hence I was happy to buy another Jeep, but never again.

Best Family Real Off Roader and an Absolute Bargain

    published

Comfortable and quiet on road with a surprising turn of speed and good handling. Excellent off road and probably the best 4 wheel drive system bar none. Owned from new and has had no problems or defects in the 4 years we have owned it.

Economy is not bad at 25mpg on average considering its size and abilities. It is also packed with both luxury and safety items.

The so called hard plastics inside are made to be wiped down with a damp cloth if you get them muddy whilst using the car offroad. Amazingly hard wearing as an interior.

Only available second hand but find one and treasure it.
Size, space and the way it drives on and off road

    great tow vehicle

    published

Like anything, you need to check it out thoroughly but for us the commander we have had for two years and its great. 3.5 towing. Arguably the best off road capability (quadra drive). Some parts are harder to get..wish theyd made thousands more. Swirl motor seal needs to be changed to new one otherwise oil leaks into the turbo...not food. Merc engine and tran. Definitely worth a look!
beaut to drive, torque, luxurious. great off road (with lift kit).good tow vehicle.
parts harder to get. 3rd row seat only for small kids. rear visibility a pain. recommend reverse camers

    What was I thinking

    published

My first and last Jeep. I'm not sure why I initially was attracted to this vehicle maybe I wanted something different or maybe I was just confused. Built quality is very suspect. Fuel consumption is terrible but it's still not that powerful. These things look and feel cheap but arn't cheap so go figure. And a word of warning don't take it four wheel driving with friends with proper 4x4's it'll end badly.
The day I sold it to some poor guy with no taste
Leaked oil, bad build quality, the looks dated as soon as I left the show room floor and terrible resale

I do love my Jeep - but at every 6 months it costs a fortune! As it uses the special oil filter and oil, a minor service costs more than a full service did on my old car!
My son loves sitting in the 3rd row, but he gets a bit uncomfortable on long drives on holidays.
easy to drive, not too heavy!
    cost of service!

Love my Jeep Commander diesel turbo. Its my every day car and tow rig for my 3ton RV. A reliable work horse and fun machine off road. Worth every dollar i spend to keep it on the road. Compared to toyota and nissan its more bang for your buck.

This is our second Jeep, the first one being a Jeep Cherokee, the only reason we upgraded was to increase the pulling power needed for our caravan. We had an issue with the computer/electronics whilst on holidays, and Chrysler Jeep picked the vehicle up and provided us with a replacement vehicle until the repairs were carried out. Very happy with customer service.
2007 Jeep Commander 3L Diesel : I just love this vehicle, it looks good, runs beautifully and tows our 25ft caravan with ease.
Probably a little heavy on juice, but there is very little to critise about this vehicle

What sort of fuel consumption does the 3LTR have? We are looking at secondhand 2006 model. What is the air-con level like throughout car?

This is a great Jeep! I think it doesn't get the accolades it deserves. It goes anywhere, and takes you there in comfort. It stands out in the crowd, and certainly looks tough! I have read all sorts of review about the poor quality of the interior, but I think the fit and finish is very good, and the overall equipment levels are also great. I really like the wood grain! What can I say!!
Luxury Interior with all the featurs you need, Rugged Looks, Flexible Seating, Go Anywhere Capability.
Very comfortable on long country jaunts.
Diesel consumption significantly higher than expected, and sat nav not the best.

The Jeep Commander is a proper 4WD and not a Toorak tractor like the Lexus RX.
The Jeep Commander is comfortable in stop / go city driving but can take it to the extreme off road and in the bush. It hass plenty of mod-cons inside including a decent enough stereo, good seats with proper adjustments and plenty of cupholders, though the fit and finish is not up to the standards of the European makes.
Rugged design and looks. Great V6 diesel engine - both powerfull and reasonably economical (at least for a go anywhere 4WD).
Interior design, fit and finish is not the best and no nearly comparable to the european upmarket 4WD's that this vehicle is trying to ente into.

I couldn't believe how out-of-date the Japanese 4x4s are. The Commander has the best 4x4 system on the market and the best diesel engine under $100k. The fact that it's also very smooth and quiet on the road is a bonus, I think it handles better than some cars I've driven. I can't believe that there aren't more on the road !!
Fabulous turbo diesel engine, quick but also economical - I'm getting 10l/100ks around the city !! Very nice interior, unbeatable value.
A little low at the front, waiting for the Old Man Emu suspension kit to come out.

Our 2006 Jeep Commander will not start due to computer and or electrical problems. mechanics and auto electricians do not know why. Has anyone got any suggestions? We really liked the car but do not know whether it is possible to fix it. We had the ECU repaired and a new starter motor. Maybe we will have to scrap it. Thank you

A little more information would assist. Is your Commander a Diesel? Does it start and die within a few seconds? Have you changed the battery?
I have a Diesel 2006 Commander and did have a similar problem after jump starting it due to the ECU putting it into "anti theft" mode when too many initial attempts were made.

    PeteS

I had a few electrical glitches with mine and sold the car before they started costing big $$. Sounds like time for yours to go. Maybe take to a jeep dealer and have the problem analysed to see if it's worth fixing. Not sure what they are worth as scrap but obviously worth more running. Good luck.

    aussie
    aussie

It is a diesel, we have not changed the battery. No one knows what is wrong because they cannot start the car. The local jeep dealership does not know what is wrong. If only we could find out what is wrong. it is a shame if we have to scrap it. Thank you anyway.

I am not sure. I removed the centre rear headrest in order to get e clear view through the rear window.
It's all immaterial now because the Commander self ignited last August and burnt to the ground !!!

Hi Pat. From memory if you lay the seat down the headrest falls. I think you need to lift it before you lift the seat upright again.

Hi Pat, sorry for taking so long getting back to you, My rear headrests are leaning slightly forward can't straighten them up,
I also removed the centre rear headrest in order to get e clear view through the rear window.
So Sorry to hear you lost your Commander, I just love mine, had to Replace Front Driveshaft after 200,000klm though. I am now aiming towards getting a 2" Lift and slightly Wider Tyres for Beach Driving, hope to have it all done before March 2017.
?? have you Brought another Commander.
