dont buy one built before 2007.After this date they have different motors in them .I have heard the new ones are hard on fuel .
inside of carnival is well designed for comfort and mobility
there is a problem with their motors up to 2006 models . My 2004 model did a head gasket at 79,000km and 8 days out of warrenty, unfortunately I did not see the temp gauge move as the motor dumped all the coolant ( apparently the heat gauge will flicker hot breifly then settle back to normal as the water disappears )and the motor seized . DON'T BUY A KIA CARNIVAL PLEASE LISTEN TO US YOU WILL HAVE PROBLEMS IF YOU KEEP IT AND THEN IT IS TOO LATE.
It is comfortable, price is right for the average family. The little extras suchas glasses holder and cup holder.Thought we did our homework. How wrong we were.
Wide turning circle needed.Where do we start. I have read all of the reveiws and I feel for the ones who have had no trouble and only hope you are lucky enough not to, as you will then know how the rest of us are feeling. We bought a new 2004 model Kia from Bankstown Nissan (who u...Read more
nfortunately for us are no longer in busines). We had problems with our warranty with such thingsas thepassenger side cover down near the bottom of the seat broke, the passenger side air bag started to come loose,we told our mechanic we were burning oil and upon investigation he told us to take it back to Kia whilst it was still under warranty as it was also leaking a small amount of oil. We went to buy new tyres and we were told by Bob Jane T-Mart they could not do a wheel alignment as it was out by 1 degree. We took it back to Kia and they told us there was nothing wrong with the alignment and the oil burning and oil leak were nothing to worry about. IT WAS NORMAL. We had to get the alignment fixed by another mechanic before a wheel alignment was able to be performed. The warranty ran out in October 2006 and what do oyu know the air conditioner went in December. After $600.00 we had air -con again. In April 2007 the oil leak got severely worse and we had it in the shop for nearly 3 weeks and had all the seals including the rear main seals replaced. Another $1700.00 and we thought that was that. In July 2007 I was driving and suddenly heard a tapping noise at first thought is was a fan belt going however in about 10 seconds the motor gave a clunck and stopped. Had it towed to the mechanic's and discovered the broken parts and motor had ceased. It has only done 177,000 kma. We own a Nissan Nomad which we bought brand new in 1989 and it has done over 511,000 kms and doesn't miss a beat. WE CAN'T TAKE THIS LYING DOWN LETS GET OUT THERE AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. I WANT TO HEAR FROM EVERYONE WHO HAS HAD A PROBLEM OR NOT WITH THEIR KIA CARNIVAL THE PROBLEMS WERE SUPPOSED TO BE FIXED IN THE 2004 MODEL AND THEN AGAIN IN THE 2006 MODEL. IS THIS EVER GOING TO HAPPN IF ENOUGH PEOPLE GET TOGETHER MAYBE WE CAN HAVE KIA FIX THE PROBLEM. WE ARE PAYING AROUND THE 30-45,000 DOLLARS FOR OUR NEW CARS WE EXPECT NOT TO BUY PROBLEMS THIS IS WHY WE BUY NEW CARS ISN'T IT. YOU CAN EMAIL ME AT [email protected] I WILL BE IN TOUCH WITH EVERYONE WHO HAS AN EMAIL IN THIS REVEIW.

Happy with my Kia until at 44,000km the engine blew up. Kia replaced it and now at 89,000km (45,000km on the "new engine" same problem. This time Kia refuse to give me any support. Can't even get the name of the Customer Service Manager - what a joke. Told to go back to the dealer. Dealers response "Don't buy a Kia they're crap". What are you suppose to do with a car that won't go!!!! I can't let it rest here. I know loads of other people have had the same problem. I'll be contacting the Office of Fair Trading. It could have been a good car. 6 years after and after one supposedly replacement engine (which I doubt as the second time the engine gave up, the mechanic found some old O-ring inside when openned). Now, he fixed the coolant lose but tell you what, the piston(s) gave up and 6 months down the track, I still don't have the car.
Buying another Kia carnival? The new engine (acc. to Kia) is the same as the Mitsubishi 380. Time will tell if it will last me 200,000 kms.

Kill the Kia.. if you've done 200,000 -- be prepared to use it as a backyard shed. average cost, big, spacious, small engine (2.5l), not fast but gets you there after sales. once sold, you are on your own OR if they do provide service, they skip their normal procedures and just do the quick thing. is it the co. or its just the service personnel, I don't know. It's a lemon. Don't buy it. 2001 model, gone less than 80,000kms and now dead. The infamous oil in coolant problem which KIA acknowledge is a defect and now refuse to fix. Currently fighting with them to fix it.

Only positive thing about this car is the layout.

I own a 2000 kia Carnival which I had bought 2nd hand in 2004 from an independant car yard with 90,000 kms on the clock ..but I was told at the time that a NEW AND MODIFIED motor had been put in under warranty at 60,000 kms as there was a fault known to kia with this particular engine and so it was replaced. Well after some phone calls to the original Kia dealership Peter Warren from which the car was originally purchased by the previous owner ... this story was backed up and I was assured that this new engine (which had actually only clocked...Read more
30,000 kms )was a different and better one and the fault had been rectified. So I went ahead with the purchase.BIG MISTAKE..WHAT A BIG FAT LIE. In less than another 30,000kms the head went on the engine...Kia wiped their hands of any responsaibility at this point and said the car was over 3yrs old and tough luck it was our problem not theirs,.....(even though previously they had admitted to there being a fault with the Kia Carnival engines ...as well by this stage it had become a well known problem among the field of auto mechanics.) I tried to no avail to get some answers and eventually gave up, thinking maybe things will be ok if we had it fixed by our own mechanic ....over $2500 and 6 weeks later we thought the car would Be OK WROONGGG AGAIN....... JUST ONE YEAR LATER ....MORE problems, MORE noises MORE trips to the mechanics, and MORE MONEY,, the car performance was still going down hill fast.Till just last week when the engine packed it in TOTALLY... and NOW NO ONE wants to go near it with a ten foot pole...WHY you say ..because every mechanic, every engine reconditioner, and anyone in the auto trade I have spoken too (except KIA of course) know all about the problem with these engines and say the same thing .just get rid of it, its a LEMON dont waste your money (not to mention the fact that these reconditioned engines dont exist basically because every man and his dog is looking for one) ....WELL HELLO KIA ARE YOU DEAF. ..WHY are they allowed to get away with this ...I say why hasnt anyone gone to current affairs about all this...If you are totally relating to what I am saying here and want some answers and have tried to do something legally or would like to take some action write back a response here or send to my email [email protected] .It would be great to hear also any success stories where you have been able to get Kia to take responsability for this known manufacturing problem with these engines. i reluctantly rate this car poorly, i was in love with my carnival until lo and behold same head problem as i have just read about 400 times, i wish people had known about back when i bought my 02 modle 2 years ago for 16000 + the usless $ 1400 warrenty which is nothing in the scheme of about 9000 when it only pays out 2000. i loved the sapce for my two babies and saved my back not having to lean over car seats. but i am looking for something else now and i will cut my losses because by the looks of things replacing the engine wont, as i was thinking, be any guarantee of reliability. RIP my carnival

I liked the Carnival at first. Poor quality of accessories was initial irritation. Spark plug leads also went high resistance, same problem with earlier owned Mentor. The bottom set required the engine to be lifted to replace them. Had two engines fitted. First at 96,000 and out of warranty. Importer at the time, ATECO, did this for free except I paid for oil and one belt. Second motor at 138,000kms. Motor replaced for free except I paid for oil. The motor problems related to loose piston sleeves that moved and blow head gasket and warped the h...Read more
eads. Replacement engines were not reconditioned but had the sleeves reseated only and heads shaved. Hence after a time problem occurs again. It is a design fault. ALL vehicle dealers know of the problem so you can expect very low trade-in price. New importer is decidedly unresponsive to any problems and you can expect no help if you have just experienced an engine problem. New models have different engine design, after 2003 you are ok. It is a shame but no more Kias for me. Stylish and great carrying capacity. Dual Sliding doors. Arm rests. Kids love this type of vehicle. Poor turning circle. Poor quality of instruments (odometer couldn't be reset) Brittle plastic handles. . Front tyre wear (fitted adjustable steering arms to try to fix but only minor improvement)...oh.. and the engineSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

We liked our LATE MODEL 2002 carnival for the firSt 50000km, good room for a family of 6.
handles fell off the two front doors, POOR INTERIOR Upholstery on seats
Engine block / camshaft failure at 50000km, which is going to cost $8500 to fix and we are still paying off the $32000 we paid for it in 2003!!

Ours is a manual '05, bought new & the only problems we've had have been a jammed CD player - replaced, and a temperamental DVD player - replaced 3 times, but it was free in the first place. Only get the manual, autos are gutless.
When ours was a week old, we took the kids (6, 5 & 2 yo) to Qld for 2 weeks. Drove straight through (1400 km) overnight there & back - not a problem. Kids slept all night, woke at 6:00 am just as we pulled into Caloundra. Whole trip was 5000 km & for most of it we didn't HEAR the kids. The combo of individual seats &...Read more

Bought a Dec 1999 Kia Carnival from Ken Morgan Brighton for $12000 in October 2007 for use during the coming festive season. Mileage shows 105,000 km. Was assured by the salesman that the known engine problem only occurs in the automatic version. Since this was a manual, the problem does not exists.
Mid November 2007, engine blown. Kia refused to talk to me. Ken Morgan wanted me to trade the car back in AS IT IS (ie. scrap value) for another Kia. What a rip off.

Just replaced the idle air control valve on my 2004 Carnival LS. when I started it the motor ran smoothly. after about 2 mins it started to drop revs & miss so I removed the IAC & MAF connectors. This killed motor. I reconnected the two plugs then tried to start motor again but will not start. I have no taco or spark from the coils. I hope the repairs are not expensive as I can't afford it on the pension. Thank you in advance, Denis.

if you can prove that he said that then you can sew the dealer directly for incorrect information supplied at time of sale, as no car of any make or model has a different motor whether its manual or auto, i would be absolutely furious.
