Good
I picked up my 99 Carnival just under $4000 nearly 2 years ago and despite the car getting a lot bad reviews I am realy pleased with the way drives, handles, etc. The motor in this car is fantastic as it's economy is still very good and is also very reliable after 11 years and 146,000kms. I've had late model Falcons less reliable than this van, so i think i will be holding onto it for sometime. I always say if you treat the car well it will treat you well.
Plenty of space, good economy fuel wise, very easy to drive.
Little awkward to see out the rear, engine sometimes revs a little high.

4 Engines in 6 years 154,000kms. No resale value with or without a working engine. You are in possession of a cradle to grave vehicle. Once you own it it's yours for the life of the vehicle, 'cause anyone in their right mind after reading these reviews would not buy a new or used Carnival. KIA have misrepresented this vehicle from virtually the first series in 1999. We were assured that any engine problems that had affected series 1 up to 2001, had been totally fixed by KIA Motors, and that the engine had been re-engineered. The engine started ...Read more
as a wet sleeve 2.5lt V6 (The old ROVER MOTOR block and head) and has only just been changed in the latest series 2007+ models, so I've been told. Engine is old world ROVER technology that KIA has made their consumer's pay for, and walk away from. It should be a criminal offence to sell so many vehicles with so many known mechanical problems to a sector of the community which can least afford it. Would make a great peoplemover if, the engine actually worked and was a diesel 3.0lt turbo not made by KIA, a Toyota or Isuzu transmission with rear wheel drive, and the interior upholstery was made by Chrysler as in the Voyager, So I guess the PROS are NIL to KIA. Not bad to look at - but only look at - DON'T TOUCH WITH A BARGE POLE LESS THAN 3 METERS LONG!!! KIA Motors fully know about the engine failure problems, yet will tell you either it's an isolated problem (you have the only one that's failed), or it's been resolved with this latest model. The fact that it isn't a Chrysler Voyager, Toyota Tarago or Hiace, Honda Odysee, and basically because it's a KIA.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

The Kia carnival is fairly simple to drive, albiet with a wide turning circle. The engine is powerful enough for the cars size (besides a slight decrease in acceleration when fully loaded).
However don't buy one, kia carnival engines can crack within a few thousand Ks causing them to have engine oil in the coolant water ad water throughout the engine.
Layout, fairly large leg room, quiet engine, nice to drive... however
Majority of kia carnival 2001-2003 models have an engine defect that causes the engine to die within a few thousand kms. This fault is widely known but is not reported to kia carnival drivers. Kia motors australia does not take responsibility easily

We got this as a family car, not being able to afford the more popular brands such as the toyota. This car spent more time at our mechanics then it did with us, as my dad likes to joke we probably funded the mechanic a few good holidays that year. It was very unreliable, always breaking down. We travelled to QLD from NSW and it broke down on the way home and we had to catch a plane back home. We spent way more repairing this car then it was even worth and in the end we had to trade it in as there was no way of selling it privately, you wouldn't wish it upon anyone!

Very good car, nice and solid, sits well on the road, good price compared to others at the time and car always look good in traffic.High seating helps you to see ahead in the traffic, bit like a 4wd hight .Lots of room, easy to take away on trips.
Lots of room, feels solid, good to drive, sit up high, every thing inside you need
can be a big car, but you do get use to it

my 2005 ls carnival started to make a knocking noise on our way up to our holz in qld, had it towed to a kia dealership in Ballina and was told its not going any where, rang kia up was told its 2 weeks out of warranty and way not going to do anything, so I hired a car to go to qld as we booked and payed for every thing for the hol, spent a week up there rang dealership to see what the prob is they said it may be the big end, had to hire car back to Campbelltown (south western Sydney). It took a bout 1 month for the dealer ship to get back to us...Read more
as they said they where understaffed and was informed that the crank shaft had snapped (the car has only done 48000 k's) now fighting to have car fixed under good will and also notified fair-trading (they cant get over that the crank snapped at 4800) and they are looking in to it, been ringing kia's h/o in Parramatta to have the good will app pushed through, dealership was told by kia that the crank would only be replaced but the dealership said no the car needs a new bottom end. Been recording all conversations with KIA and dealership found out that KIA lies a lot as dealership has been recording the times they call KIA. Would not bye a kia ever again as they know of the prods and would not notify the owners at all, to interested in the $$$$$$$ not the public. planty of space for the kids Kia customer service crap, 2005 mod still has engine probs with big end,Similar opinion? Kia Carnival 1999 model - just reached about 100 000 kms and sterted developing engine troubles. Engine repairs (water mixing with oil) had cost me over R50 000 in repairs already and is still broken. Car is good enough for a bond fire. My moral principles do not allow me to sell the car to anyone else. I doubt that the scrap yard would want it. I would rather spend more when buying the car and have peace of mind motoring. Kia - never ever again. Biggest rubbish you can ever buy.

A good idea poorly executed. Badly let down by quality and reliability, compounded by poor after sales service and support. What was marketed as the cheapest 7 seater has now cost us more after 6 years than had we have purchased a japanese quality vehicle in the first place. You live and learn.
loads of space, removable seats, good visibility, low purchase price.

This is the 3rd Carnival we have owned starting from 200 up until now. Each Carnival has had its problems from Throttle to the latest which has had the "diff" replaced just short of the expiry of the warranty. Each time we have brought it to the attention of Kia (bendigo) and it has been fixed without hassle. Basically you get what you pay for. I am happy that i got what I paid for and what I got suited my needs and budget. I can't afford $50,000 + for a Tarago that does the same thing. I feel for those who have had major problems but I believe they are improving as time goes on.

Ours was 2002 year. Reconditioned short engine at 41,000kms under warranty in 2004. Now second engine has lost compression and has only done about 72,000 kms 10/2008. No warranty from Kia as car is 3 years out of warranty, will only warrant recond short engine for 12 months or 20,000 kms and I have to foot the costs. I am going to try and get something out of Kia anyway. This is bull, if I put a new engine in my car there is no guarnatee that this new engine will not blow up as well. Has anyone had a loss of compression or excessive compression...Read more
in the sump on their Carnivals, if so I would like to hear from you. My email is [email protected] Plenty of room, drives well, not bad on fuel for a big car. engines are crap, gearbox on the autos has an anoying delay between forward/reverse selection. Cost of replacement parts.Carnivals are worth nothing when you try to sell them, a car that should be worth about $13,000 you are lucky to get $5,000 trade and that is only if you can prove you have had the engine repaired(cost for our repair between 6 & $8,000)Similar opinion? Just replaced the idle air control valve on my 2004 Carnival LS. when I started it the motor ran smoothly. after about 2 mins it started to drop revs & miss so I removed the IAC & MAF connectors. This killed motor. I reconnected the two plugs then tried to start motor again but will not start. I have no taco or spark from the coils. I hope the repairs are not expensive as I can't afford it on the pension. Thank you in advance, Denis.
