A good everyday insulated bottle
I was surprised to see so few Klean Kanteen reviews on this site. Even though their product line has recently been completely revamped, you should be able to find their "Classic" range still stocked in stores. The bottle I am reviewing is the 592mL Insulated Classic bottle in unpainted brushed steel with the Sport Cap 3.0.
The bottle itself is a good size and has a good capacity, looks great and is easy to handle. The insulation is a mixed bag though. I always choose insulated bottles because I like to fill my bottles with chilled water in sum...Read more
mer (and sometimes ice cubes on extra hot days) and the insulation certainly does work, but the manufacturer claims the bottle keeps water hot for 20 hours and cold for 50 hours and that is definitely NOT the case. Of course, it depends on your definition of "hot" and "cold", but I would say water stays hot for about 5 hours and cold for maybe 10, so about a QUARTER of what they claim. At any rate, take their claims with a grain of salt. The bottle came with a simple loop cap, which is a little more than a stopper. I never liked the loop cap. You have to screw it down firmly to prevent leaks and it is difficult to open because there is not much to grip. The loop is small and uncomfortable to hold when the bottle is full. I also disliked the inconvenience of having to unscrew and remove the lid to take a drink, and so I bought the Sport Cap 3.0 for $7.95. The Sport Cap is better than the loop cap in every way - but not perfect. It is much easier to handle as there is larger, angled carrying loop which is more comfortable to hold and unscrew the lid. It is much more convenient to use since you just have to pull up the spout to drink from it and I have found it to be leakproof in that if I turn the bottle upside-down, no water comes out. But here's an important caveat: there is a small silicon nub below the carrying loop which is part of the air seal. If you press the nub when the bottle is on its side, water comes out. I learned the hard way that this can happen if you carry the bottle in a bag; the bottle may fall on its side and if something in your bag happens to push against the nub, your belongings will be soaked. The other thing I don't like about the Sport Cap is that there is no way to dismantle it to clean the inside parts. After almost three years my one is probably full of mould, but since the cap is coloured black and can't be opened, it's impossible to tell.Purchased in December 2021 at King of Knives.
