Great iconic flashlight
Let's be real here. The Mini Maglite is a very poor performer when compared to today's similarly sized LED flashlights. In fact it's output intensity is eclipsed even by the cheapest crappiest LED light from your local two dollar store. But lumens are not where it's charms lie. What makes this a great little flashlight is it's design. It's not pretentious, and it's very functional. It's adjustable beam is useful, and how can you not appreciate it's candle mode, and the thoughtfulness of including a spare bulb in the tail cap?

gh I have lights that legitimately push close to 1000 lumens these days (the Mini Maglite puts out about 15), and which can also ramp down to much less significant values (so they are still useful for things other than simulating the second coming of Jesus), I still use my Maglite in it's default configuration occasionally, since it puts out a wonderfully warm, almost orange light. It really is a lot like a candle, and we all like candlelight, don't we? It's relaxing. It's served me well for close to 20 years. As such, I'm now biased by my emotional attachment to it. But in a nutshell, it's the design and the functionality that makes this light great.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Perfect design - lower than poor output!
I have found that the 2xAA design with the barrel and the twist head (on/off) to be absolutly perfect and indispensable - no dust or dirt has made it in there ever to affect the performance of heads use. The Aluminium barrel and head are solidly made and the thread's are exceptionally machined for long term use, therefor I have accumulated 3 of these in my younger years and they are still around to tell the story.
I would suggest that people 'upgrade' their AA Maglites with the Nite Ize LED & IQ Switch kits for superior performance and longer ...Read more
battery life - however at $40 a kit it would seem inneficient as these kits are more than the cost of the whole torch. Inexpensive compared to other high end torches. Robust design and non corroding! Good water resistance with 'O-ring' design. Very low light output, high battery consumption. Not a valuable tool when camping as bulbs blow frequently & are hard to find.

If you're after even more lumens from your old trusty Mini Maglite, the TerraLUX LED upgrade will see it putting out over 100.

Have installed a Nite Ize 1 Watt LED and IQ Switch kit which was purchased online from Amazon.com for $14 + postage. It has remarkably increased the light output of the Mini Mag, the tail cap switch i... Read more
s another ingenious idea which has given the Mag a new lease of tactical life and made it more functional as you can choose the light output and savings of your battery. The Maglight / Nite Ize upgrade is more of a sidegrade as if and when the LED fails, you cant really pop in the spare bulb from the tailcap as there is nowhere to store it. So you are turning the Maglight from a tool when you can replace bulbs, to a toy with the LED sidegrade. Either which way I am happy with the torch now, its not great but much much better!
