My employer signed me up for MTTA super and I didn't bother checking them out until a couple of days after signing the super form. After receiving around one hundred dollars in employer contributions, I read reviews that showed that MTTA was a terrible provider, so I tried to transfer my balance.

To my surprise, the combination of fees, contribution tax and insurance fees by MTTA mean that I have an effective balance of $0.00 and cannot transfer any money out of the account.

MTAA ripped me off quite a number of years ago. To cut a very long story short I went to claim on my income protection insurance with them (at the time the payout would have been enough to pay off my house) and after much dancing around they denied that I even had an insurance policy with them. I produced my copies of the paperwork but still they denied it!

MTAA is a shady, heartless organisation when it comes to income protection. I changed my income protection to MTAA in good faith, two years later when I need it, they are just despicable. I am now in financial hardship because of them and they do not care. I chose a 30 day waiting period on my income protection, I have now been waiting 3 months. I recently rolled over to another fund 3 months of employer contributions & have just received the MTAA Super account summary..
Here's the breakdown, I'll let you decide whether this fund is working in the recipient's (client) best interests.

Employer contributions: $920.65
Admin fees: -$17.75
Tax: -$138.10 (unavoidable)
Insurance fees: -$119.28 (a default insurance cover which I hadn't requested and wasn't aware of)
Exit fees: -$96.00 (how do they justify this??)
Investment earnings: $9.62 (at least positive)

I rang to withdraw my fund. The agent told me she would post me authorisation form but it would take a while to generate. I asked her why send form via Australia Post when you have my email address. Are you intentionally attempted to delay my receipt of the form? Then the agent agreed to email it but told me it takes 24 hours to create the form, as the fields are populated with my details. Frustration! They need to work on some basics here as MTAA have red tape well packed down and provide insurance never requested in the first place. They are unable to provide proof of insurances requested and have also returned rollover paper work 4 times! to change separate bits of information which could have been communicated initially. The losses made during this 2 year period with this company have been staggering compared to other super funds which have been making some impressive profits.

After just two years with MTAA we lost about 28%,( $280.000 ) of our investment during the GFC.
Because of this fund investing in mainly unlisted property, there was a delay before it hit hard.
At no point were members warned in the on line newsletter of the serious implications being faced. On the contrary, it was presented as a normal market adjustment.
Since this disaster many funds have almost recovered. MTAA is still struggling.

I hav'nt had a problem with service yet. Able to change investment portfolio on a weekly basis now. Those
who complain about losses after GFC, welcome to the real world. MTAA only invest your money where you requested. Your choice not theirs, so don't complain about short term losses if you don't watch the market and move your investment to make the best of it.
