Bad Modem for the cost
The Router/modem doesn't support external HDD (if you really search on netgear website you will find 5 compatible HDD).... the router keeps disconnecting.. the router promises excellent range but its shocking to know that my previous Belkin router had better range than this one ... utter waste of money... please do not buy it ...
it doesnt do a single thing as advertised...

Good but buggy modem/router
I'm currently running the latest firmware (version 1.0.0.30), and after owning this device for just under 6 months I remain satisfied. My home network consists of various devices, including two 5G ethernet bridges, two PC's, PS3, printer, and two android smart phones. I had to reserve IP's to get the network stable. To enable Android push notifications I had to place one of the phones into a DMZ. For gaming you need to run QoS, whereas for large media file transfers you have to turn QoS off. In other words this device is complex to set up prope...Read more
rly - but once done it's a peach, get one thing wrong and it'll give you loads of grief. I've assisted numerous people to get their's working via the forums, so if you're having dramas go to Whirlpool Forum and you should find some solutions there. Netgear support is utterly useless, so make use of the community forums! The short range performance is amazing, especially on 5G, but the overall range appears to be less than other comparable devices. I leave mine on 24/7 and the connection is stable and consistent. Once set up properly, this is a stable, consistently high performing device (over short range). It looks good sitting in my lounge room. The device allows multiple 2.4 and 5G simultaneous connections without any drop outs. Long range performance is poor. Netgear "support" is shockingly bad. The device is difficult to set up properly, so if you lack medium to advanced networking skills do not bother.

NetGear D6300 WiFi Router
It looks great however its performance is less than the ticket price. I have had it hang pretty much every day since I configured it with bigpond ADSL 2+. There seems to be a problem with the DHCP component and I have had to resort to using fixed IPs to support some of the main connected elements. The speed and coverage throughout my house which is two storey is surprising good with a solid signal being reported on the standard and 5G wireless connections. It doesn't seem to like to run both types of wireless connects a the same time.
I do...Read more

Download issues
Interesting that I buy what is supposed to be the best unit on the market & whilst got it connected to everything am having trouble with downloading program updates (stalls about 9% into download) Rang Netgear tech support who were absolutely hopeless. Took an hour before the techspurt realised it was above his head & then referred me up the chain where they wanted $139- to progress further.
Objected to this after paying $399- at Harvey Norman (ripped off) All-up it was going to cost me over $500- just to be able to connect to my new WDTV box. Have gone back to my Bigpond modem until I can work out what the issue is.
Hardest part is the support (there is none)

Overit,
Mate, the modem will work with just normal ADSL, but than my personal advice would be just to stay away from this modem

Please advise a good router (in Australia) which is reliable, easy to install and will speed up my streaming and downloading?Cheers Rowena

Rowena,
There are a number of good routers in OZ it depends on how much you are willing to pay. For example you could pay $600 for the top of the range or you could pay $150 for a reasonable router. However there is no router that will actually speed up your streaming and downloading, that is all dependent on your service provider, the area you live in, the kind of service you have. I know people who have the NBN up and running and their speeds are slower than ADSLII for example with my Netgear(ADSLII) D6300 I am averaging 14MB/Sec download and 700kb - 900kb up depending on the time of day. The guy up the road is on NBN with one of the big service providers and he is averaging 8MB down and 2MB up and that is late at night when most others users are in bed. What you can do is a little bit of tweaking with your router which may give you a slight edge in speed. In your router setting uncheck the QOS box. When streaming get rid of all the non essentials running in the back ground, shutdown any non essential programmes, the more you can get rid of the bigger your bandwidth. The other problem you may have is other users doing the same as you or business in the same area doing web backups they all kill the bandwidth. (Just ask Telstra) hope this helps if only a little bit.

Same problem with my D6300 (daily dropouts). Netgear Support initially told me to update my firmware to Version 1.1.00.24. When I tried to do so, I got an "Internal Server Error". It turned out that t... Read more
he latest firmware is only available to North American customers. Netgear subsequently "corrected" themselves and told me to download version 1.0.0.24 (the version that is already installed on my machine). If the lateste version of the firmware really fixes the dropout problem, maybe Netfear should release it for everybody!
