308

Hi All, i;m thinking of buying a 308 Wagon Diesel but everyone says to stay away because parts and service are expensive. I really like them but would like to hear from people who have owned them to get a good perspective. I live in Melb, does anyone know of a good Peugeot Mechanic?

Only downside I know is you must change the timing belt at about 120 000km. Servicing is about the same or cheaper, the engines go for ever (my 306hdi is up round 350000km and is as strong as ever) and the economy is most reasonable.

Hi Robert
I have now done 78000klms in my 308 HDi 2 ltr,its 5 years old, which gearbox are you looking at mine is the 6 speed auto and has not given any problems at all not even the slightest hint of any, the brakes have been a problem at 29000 was told i needed new rotors and pads i questioned this with Peugeot but that appears normal, i had them ground and new pads fitted all worked fine at 62000klms they had a warp and had to have them replaced they were only just down to the legal thickness, but went for aftermarket ones and pads not only were they much cheaper fitted than the Peugeot ones but are much better brakes, after 16000klms there is virtually no wear on the rotors, there is a little squeal at times from the pads but there is also much less dust on the rims, there are a lot of modern cars that have rotor wear early not just Peugeots, i really enjoy the car and would purchase another. Hope this helps, don't forget it will depend on how hard you will be on the brakes

Hello again just a bit more info the rear brakes are the original ones was told at last service they only had max 4000klms left well that was 6000klms ago and there is still material left will replace at 80000, and the rotors are fine very little sign of wear, the car has had no other problems to date

Hello
I have only once used Bio Diesel mix in my 308, it is or was only available in South Australia as far as know, i filled not knowing it was Bio but didn't notice any difference in performance or usage, not sure if Peugeot recommend its use in its Diesels, don't think it is commonly available in Australia.

Hi David, thank you for the reply. Peugeot France allows the use of up to B30 [30% biodiesel] under warrenty as long as the fuel meets the Euro standard of EN14214. Any diesel car should be able to handle B5 [5% biodiesel]. I would not recommend you use B100. I think Peugeot Australia only allow B5 [I suspect due to perceived difference between the Australia and European biodiesel standards. I have now done 1000kms on B5 with no issues.

I used BP biodiesel in my 306hdi and carefully calibrated the fuel consumption. I switched back to normal diesel when I noticed a slight increase in fuel consumption over several tankfuls and of course it was more expensive. I didn't notice any change in engine or power characteristics. If you read the BP blurb on its biodiesel it avoids mention of increased consumption but I understand it is commonplace. Due perhaps to reduced cetane rating?
