Still drives like new with no issues
Have had my 2008 performance RS petrol Octavia since 2011 with hassle free driving. Always done servicing on time. Only repairs were the electric coils being replaced as I noticed the engine was unhappy. Other than that I just fuel it up and have it serviced cheaply at Ultra Tune. Goes like the clappers, handles like a dream, cheap to own, easy on fuel and excellent long term paint job with no marks. Would be silly to sell it as its not worth much but is essentially the same car and in the same condition I bought 8 yrs ago. With all cars you can get a dud, but you are less likely with these.
Purchased in October 2021 for $20,000.00.

no problems
we bought the 118tsi dsg new in 2014 as the last 1z on the lot (Octavia 3 already for sale). Have done 60000km with the only problem being the battery was a stop/start one which our car does not have( they charge differently to normal batteries).
the car is used every day in Wagga Wagga, also as the main travelling car. the car is serviced ahead of scheduled km as it was months came first. It is now being serviced by a European car specialist as the dealer stopped selling Skodas and wanted the car in more often due to extended warrenty
Purchased in March 2021 for $26,500.00.

Update to Love my car BUT
Update: My 2008 car is now over 220,000 km and still going well. It is a manual and I would recommend avoiding the auto's as they have had a lot of issues. One lady in town had a auto and told me it can suddenly go out of gear, which is very scary if you were crossing a busy road! Skoda has told her repeatedly that there is no problem!
Please note that these model Skoda's do not have the dangerous Takata air bags. The Octavia III (2014-2018) do though.
Purchased in October 2021.

Great car
Additional to my older review.....still have the 1Z 2013 special edition tsi 1.4l 7speed dsg at 62,000 kms. Little has changed. Still original tires exhaust and brakes. Still looks and drives as new. Two extended warranty jobs in the fifth year...a failing water pump and delaminating rear window heater element. Always used ron98. Fuel consumption is around 5litres/100 or under on freeway, and around 6.2 or less combined. At a constant 80km/hr I've measured about 4.4 and in Brisbane city traffic 7.5. Into it's 6th year I test drove an Eclipse Cr...Read more
oss and ASX, both new 2018 models, but on reflection found no good reason to change. I may consider a change when the warranty expires, possibly a new Octavia. Now in my 9th decade I've had some driving experience and the Octavia is the best vehicle I ever owned. Touch wood.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Not happy with the vw engine
Skoda has a good body but a bad engine with multiple manufacturing defects and faults for which they don’t oun upto, be cautious of buying one and keeping it for longtime. I would not recommend skoda or vw only due to massive engine issues for longtime especially if it is a manufacturing issues which come up after the warranty period which might end up costing as much as the cars present value.

Excellent vehicles
I currently have a 2008 Skoda Octavia ‘Scout’ AWD diesel wagon, bought second hand with 100,000km. This is my second Octavia and by far my favourite. I’ve had two Toyotas between and while they were fine, neither had the comfort & reliability of the Skoda.
The Scout (even the older models) has several great features, including heated front seats, cruise control, foot rests on the left and right sides of the footwell, fog lights, reverse sensors, auto windscreen wipers, huge boot with custom rubber boot liner, electric windows, dual zone clim...Read more
ate control air con etc etc. The fuel consumption is excellent - averaging 6L per 100km, even when fully loaded with four adults, gear on the boot and a load on the roof racks. On open highway driving fuel consumption regularly drops to between 5.6 and 5.9L per 100km, giving me over 1,000km per tank - and that’s for a 10 year old car. I travel around 80km daily to work and it’s a very comfortable drive in the Skoda - I have had no major issues whatsoever despite clocking up around 80,000km in the last 2 & 1/2 years. The boot is huge, very deep and with the rest sears folded flat there’s not much you can’t fit inside - Great for transporting furniture, sports equipment, plants, camping gear and hardware.Similar opinion? Just passed the 8 year anniversary since buying it new in April 2010, had an APR Stage I then Stage II retune done (2012 and 2015 respectively) and it runs as well as it ever has. Only just had the original battery replaced after almost 8 years! Love driving it. I get an oil change done every 6 months not 12 but that's just me, knowing I'd be keeping it long term. Always used 98 octane fuel but why wouldn't you anyway, these engines are hi-tech. Comfortable and fuel efficient when you want it to be, great fun to punt hard when you find a road w...Read more

Better than expected.
I bought Skoda octavia 1.8 TSI MY11 in 2014 dec to replace my old Barina. It was 3.5 years old and had 50000 kms on it. I have been using the same car even after 3 years. I have now traveled 60000 kms on that. It performs so well. Feels so good to drive. When you want the power turbo will kick in give you that extra boost. fuel economy is so good. I get 6.5L/100 consistently. I am thinking of replacing this skoda octavia with a newer one.

Octavia RS 147kw - a Golf GTi for $10k less
Rewarding to drive, very practical, and fast enough to surprise your friends. All the features I wanted (manual transmission, SatNav, good stereo) for around $40k. It suffered the known VAG timing chain tensioner failure at 6.5 years / 125,000km and Skoda Australia helped out with all the parts and most of the labour costs. I'm keeping the car for at least another 2 years at which point I'll probably buy a new Octavia RS.

the octavia tsi models have extensive oil consumption & transmission problems (1 lt per 1000km ) depends on the oil quality however it has good performance and luxurious design, strong body and engine . navigation and air conditioning are excellent .
Good economy fuel for performance . Great exterior looks and adaptive cruise control comes standard even on the base model

Very annoying road noise solved!
I've had my 2011 1.4 Diesel Wagon for 9 months now. Bought it with 39 000Km on the clock from a Govt Auction. Amazing value. Problem was (as per the research I had done) that the road noise was really loud; significantly louder than my 1997 Peugeot 406 Diesel Wagon that it replaced. Very bad at about 60kmh, then OK till about 90kmh then loud again.Even thought the tyres still had about a year of tread on them, I changed them for newies and voila! Road noise gone.

Recurring Gear Box Faults of Skoda Octavia
Fact is that in a span of 6 months the vehicle's clutch and gear box has broken down twice which points to the fact that either its faulty workmanship or the parts used had manufacturing defects. From the problems seen and reported by various clients, all point to the fact that the parts are faulty. Its morally unethical on the part of Skoda to demand half a lac from the clients every 4 to 6 months for this.
Its upto the new clients to keep in mind that this is an inherent problem and needs to be fixed by Skoda before anyone thinks of purchasing Skoda Octavia in 2017, lest the Gear Box assembly is fixed by Skoda manufacturers. Till such time extreme precaution in deciding to purchase should be taken.

What a surprise
When the thought of getting a Skoda first came up I was a little wary. I still remember some British wits in the seventies selling a pair of transfer hands for Skoda back windows with the emblem "Push Here". It was then we noticed the frequency with which Skodas were passing us on the road and thought, "Well, somebody's buying them." Now we know why. Great family car. Faced with selling our VW Jetta (the newly acquired Labrador was getting way too big), we found that the Octavia Wagon had the same floor-pan as the Jetta (not, as some think,...Read more
the Golf) and the same VW engines. The major first impression was that the Skoda is definitely not a poor-man's VW; there are areas in which it surpasses VW, solid "feel" being one and lower insurance another. This is a 2011 1.8TSi, so I cannot comment on features that have come along since but we are delighted with the air con which is blizzard-like (unlike the VW which struggled), the sound system and the rain sensitive wipers which work just fine; (the Jetta had us screaming at them). The load area is cavernous and as it turned out the rear passengers have stacks of room so the Labrador lives there. Visibility is excellent; we sit a little higher now; wagons are usually good for reverse parking and the Octavia is very easy though the twittering warning sounds have yet to be deciphered. Down Sides? The seats are too narrow (on this model at least) and oil consumption is high - as much as 1ltr per 1000ks. I read in the manual and on The Net that this is acceptable, as the engine is designed that way. (Mmm - my 2001 Alfa 156, a notorious oil-burner, doesn't use a drop twixt services. Just saying). Petrol consumption is a shade worse than published figures, but at 162,000kms the injectors are probably due for a clean. The box is a DSG and if we are honest we suspect it should have had a proper specialist's service rather than the scant attention from the people in the service records. On the assumption that Skoda will have improved on many areas since 2011 we would recommend anyone looking for all-round, solid family transport with outstanding thoughtfulness in unexpected places to at least spend a couple of hours in a Skoda. You won't need a push!2 comments

s removing the manifold, possible not reasonable but "hey, it's a VW". It was then that our mechanic phoned us and asked if we would call by. With the manifold removed we could see "tons" of carbon in the valves. Assuring us that this was down to the previous owner running on cheap petrol and lousy oil, he managed with much patience to remove almost all the gunk without performing a full head job. Gone is the excessive oil consumption and the smoky exhaust. There is a boost in horsepower and the DSG box is working better because the computer is getting the power signals it was built for. Moral (for the previous owner at least): don't scrimp on oil and fuel. And don't get your car serviced by tyre outlets. (Ask the Trade)Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Love my car BUT...
I love the power, economy, ride and reliability of my car. I have a manual turbo diesel and I can get over 1100km to the tank when I am doing highway driving! I am the second owner and got it with 16,000km on the clock and it now has over 163,000km and still going strong. The Skoda is expensive for parts and servicing here in Australia, and some of the dealers are not as friendly as I would like. not have Australian compliant tow bar fittings and a kit for Australia can not be bought from Skoda. My model (2008) required more then a few phone calls to get someone to find and fit a full after market kit for a fair price. The only other quibbles I have is that it comes in grey and other shades of grey (in general besides white black blue and red) which is very boring. One day they might learn that there are more colours out there, like Mazda has. The rear air conditioning vent is not that great if you have a rear facing child seat, as the child will not get much air flow, and I live in a very hot area of Queensland. Over head vents would have been much better. When the child was older, they kicked at the vents with their feet when they sat in their booster seat, and wrecked the vent fins. Not a great deal of leg room in the back for adults, but it has a HUGE boot. I have carted many large things I shouldn't have, thanks to that boot and the nice area made with the rear seats folded down. I only recently had both left and right mirrors come off. Not the whole unit, but just the mirror itself. I saved one in time, but lost the other. I bought a replacement for $20 on ebay from England. They are very popular cars in England, and it is a great place to search for tech info, specialist tool kits and even parts. Skoda would gain a huge market share in Australia too if it did better marketing, had friendlier dealers (and more of them) and most importantly, halved the price of their parts and servicing! My friend has their Holden Commadore do a full service for $190, mine costs around $400 no matter who I go to. Would I buy another one? Yes absolutely! One last thing, my torso is longer then normal, which makes my head go too close or even hit the ceiling or windscreen in some cars. Not so in my Skoda Octavia, I have lots of head room which makes me feel safer too.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

A competent versatile wagon with a question over long term durability
The family added a used 118 TSI DSG wagon with 50,000 kms and extended manufacturer's warranty. It is a Goldilocks sort of vehicle, "just right" in many respects and feels bigger on the inside that it looks on the outside. Lovely fit and finish and very well thought through instrumentation, minor controls and accessories. A delight to drive and delivers 6-7l/100kms on premium ULP. fail and would be replaced under (extended, thank heavens) warranty, but can't do it for 5 weeks - the agent had 5 7speed DSG gearboxes booked already for the same repair! Dislikes - DSG mightn't be as robust as a traditional auto.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Trade in ......????
The Skoda Octavia Scout 4wd is an excellent car. It was a real pleasure to drive. The service cost for this vehicle are very high, but I could live with that. When the time came to trade the car in for an new vehicle Solitaire Skoda Adelaide did NOT want to know about our car. We bought the car new and was serviced at the regular intervals. . This is the point we thought about a different brand. Even dealers couldn't get a dealer price for the car from Solitaire. Very disappointing that Solitaire Skoda Adelaide was not interested in their own car to sell as a used vehicle. We ended up buying a Holden Colorado. The Holden dealer was interested to trade our car in for a new vehicle. I will never buy a Skoda again because of the service and attitude, although the Skoda Scout itself is an excellent car. Very comfortable, excellent road holding, and very economical on the fuel.. It is only Solitaire Adelaide (located in Medindie) that we won't touch Skoda anymore.Similar opinion? Nice car, no issues (yet)
Purchased second hand 4 months ago, we've since put over 10,000 km on the car and have driven it for 7 h at a time in some instances. Comfy and (reasonably) quiet for those sort of drives.
I believe that we have the base model, with the only upgrade apparently being the multifunction steering wheel.
Driving is fine. Cabin can be extremely noisy on some road surfaces but that's neither here nor there to me.
Overall, I love it. The DSG does take a little while to get used to but once it's the only thing you drive you quickly forget about it...Read more
. The small turbo charged motor means that economy is exceptional, with highway driving affording over 800km from a tank of fuel, while if you want to put your foot down it'll actually afford a bit of get up and go. Aside from filters, we haven't had to replace much yet so I can't comment on the availability of parts (filters didn't require any extra time at the mechanics). That said, I never service my cars through a dealer, as I've not had fantastic experiences doing so, so I'm unable to comment there either. It hasn't let us down yet, so it gets full marks on reliability and the economy tested thus far means it gets full marks on running costs. I'll try to remember to post an update after another 6 months-1 year to add further information.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Up Willunga Hill on the way to Victor Harbour in SA it passes every car every time and especially on those 44C days Adelaide is famous for. se dealer service under any situation, They have recommended new tyres when they were 1500Km old,. serviced the sparkplugs on my Diesel - it goes on. If you want to pay $590 for an oil change go there but its your money. VW Australia is pretty much the worst organisation with the best brand. Outstanding economy 5.5L/100Km on cruise and 6.1Km overall over 3000Km mixed driving. Huge cargo with Full size tyre. Paint is a little soft compared to the Golf I had previously. Biggest and only let down is cabin noise. I think it has made me deaf - tried Pirellis and Goodyears ( best so far ) original Bridgestones are awful. DSG gearbox a nightmare on 2011 skodia octavia 90TSI hatch
Purchased this vehicle as demo with 6K on odometer. The dsg gearbox is horrible, very intermittent on moving off and low speed, it will at times not respond to acceleration, and leave u in limbo, not a good feel when moving off from lights or simply turning a corner. The speedo is some 8K slow, verified by dealer when asked about it. Cant be fixed apparently. Cant get a comfortable driving position with drivers front seat. Road noise is terrible.
Vehicle has travelled 44K and will disposed of shortly.

2 things that I would be concerned about being serviced at a non dealer would be if the correct vw 504/507 spec oil was used especially being a diesel, the second would be were the dsg services carried out using the correct dsg fluid every 60k/4yrs whichever’s first. If you can get information regarding this and the car drives well then happy days! VW diesels are bomb proof its just a shame everything else isn’t built the same.
For that kind of money have you considered the mk2 and 2.5 Octavia RS models? Great bang for buck it’s basically a golf gti wrapped in a more family friendly body
103 TDI will save you money in the long run. My mate has 2011 TDI wagon ( 2x2) and he gets more than 1000 kms for full tank (55 ltr). Regarding servicing, even I don't get it serviced in skoda dealership. They are a ripoff. I get mine serviced by an experienced VW mechanic . AS VolksBima mentioned check for dsg service ( 60k kms) as well as haldex service ( since it is 4x4 ). Try to negotiate for 10000$ . Good luck.

I am interested in buying a Skoda Octavia !Z model, 2009-10 1.8 litr turbo petrol. It has only done 86,000 k. The dealer wants $11,000 for it. Can anyone out there advise me as to whether I should go ahead? I have never owned a Skoda or a Euopean car of this description but have read some unfavourable reviews.

Hi Ken, the unit dynamically is amazing, however that model has a couple of issues which means caution. The 1.8 L petrol engines: one in four were real oil drinkers until 2013. I have a 2013 1.8L Superb and the 5W40 Weight oil ( vs specified 5W30 VAG spec oil) completely normalised oil consumption. The model also was problematic for faulty cam chain tensioner and stretching ( poorly manufactured) cam chains which if you were unlucky was a catastrophic issue. The gearbox had a few recalls and potentially a little fragile if used in constant gridlock vs open road. Great car for enthusiast but you will need to be prepared to spend a bit more on preventative maintenance to avoid grief.
For 11k you could get into a 09-10 VRS with the Golf GTI running gear. Make sure you have a full service history from a vw/skoda workshop or a vw specialist as failure to do the dsg service will kill the gearbox. For that kind of money nothing will come close to a VRS Octavia unless size isn’t an issue then buy a mk5 golf GTI

Hello Marcinga. You don't say which motor your Skoda has, but regardless the car should not behave the way you describe. Diesels can be a rough and noisey when they are cold, petrol engines should start instantly and run smoothly. It's difficult to say more without knowing more about the car and the problem. John
Thanks Hendo900, my car make is TSI DGS. 1.8.
So, if it's a 118 TSI, it's a petrol engine and it should start instantly and run smoothly immediately. If it doesn't there's a problem. I suggest that you use Premium ULP as it makes a difference to these engines. If you have been using 95 or less octane fuel, try a couple of tanks of PULP. If that doesn't clear the problem it will be off to the Skoda agent for you. Best of luck with it. And do use the best fuel, the review pages are littered with horror stories of engine failure through running on cheap fuel.
