Excellent grinder and a cheap entry price for a first time buyer!
I've had this grinder for 3 months now and it hasn't missed one beat! I use it almost daily and works wonders. Cheap, simple, effective. Only some things to say about it, but none the less I will still give it a 5 star review:
- The group handle holder (2 different sizes) is useless. Don't install it as you still have to press the grinding button with the same group handle. After the second or third time you'll get the hang of it and won't need it.
- Definitely install the rubber nozzle. I grind 3 times (grind, press, grind, press, grind, pre...Read more
ss) and I waste less coffee than when I use to get it grinded. It can get messy, but it won't if you don't let it spill while grinding. - The manual says that for a home esspresso machine you need to have it in the 12-15 coarse setting. Took me a bit to realize that I had to go down all the way to 3 to get a fine grind for my machine. Don't go by what the manual says in terms of the grind, try it out yourself. Awesome grinder, even better price!

Practice makes perfect
Originally I was going to give a poor review, but after reading someone else's trial/error/solution I found what I'd done wrong & it works perfectly again. Listen, this is an entry level domestic burr grinder, you can't expect heaven, but this does a really consistent grind and is fine enough for great espresso in a home espresso machine; it can also be set coarse for plungers etc... As others have mentioned it can be messy, but I used it frequently everyday (house of 5 adults) for over a year without a problem, it ground well. I recently moved...Read more
& had a problem on re-assembling that the grind was extremely coarse & dirty, even after a proper cleaning. Turns out I hadn't correctly locked the base grinder into place... On correcting this my grind is back to greatness. At the end of the day, with a manual grinder, your dosing and ramping will make the biggest difference to your espresso, & to have that meet your desires takes practice. This grinder is a good one for that job, especially at the price-point.

Great machine but quality issues in first months of use
I used to service electronics products and have worked on both Breville and Sunbeam coffee machines and the Brevilles IMHO were of lesser quality than the Sunbeam products; I mention this to put into perspective as well how I rate the overall quality of the two competing products.
My EM0440 grinder works well, albeit the grind does not always pour out the spout smoothly as mentioned by others. Its not stopped, it just jumps out which is not perfect for filling Group Heads, but its not a biggie.
As far as the grind quality goes I find afte...Read more
r 2 years use still grinding a very reliable fine grind with setting between 11-12 (just under mid way). No need at this stage to install washers (as mentioned by others). I suspect the reason for the washer need is due to burrs going blunt; dirty or home roasted coffee beans maybe? Fault in mine was the bean hopper disperser cover broke off the hopper. Thats the inside thingy with 3 legs. Its poorly made and despite no stress caused by user, just broke. Sunbeam (full marks for support) supplied a new hopper bowl which comes with grinder outside which is nice because the broken one still works, and when that gets blunt I have a brand new spare! The machine is noisy; you cant talk while its running but every other grinder Ive used is noisy as well. Im very happy with this grinder. Would I buy it again, and would I recommend it to a friend - YES1 comment

Fantastic grinder!
I was really excited to bring my grinder back home and had a play around with all the parts before using it. However, after assembling it I found that the machine didn't grind the beans fine enough for my espresso machine, it was super coarse and I was really disappointed and thinking of taking it back. Then I discovered that I had removed the Grind Adjustment Collar and hadn't clicked it back in to place properly. The machine still operated but the beans were grinding ridiculously course, so if your grind is too course, then check you have...Read more
put everything in place!! It is really messy if you try to grind per cup, so I highly recommend holding the plastic cup that it comes with over the dispenser nozzle when grinding beans. I grind roughly 250gms and then clean up and pack it away as I don't have room on my bench top. It is really compact, the plastic bean hopper detaches.Similar opinion? Reliable and simple to use
We have had this grinder at home for over 12 months and it has been used every single day without any issues at all. We own our own espresso bar so know how a good coffee should be and this grinder gets pretty close to a commercial quality grind - so long as you keep the burrs cleaned regularly (weekly). Its a messy grinder for home use but at the price I won't complain.

Poor design, manual and useless customer support
When I first tried this machine, I couldn't get it to grind at any setting less than 15 and the grind between 15 and 25 hardly varied. I read the instructions fully, but they were unhelpful, so I pulled the top burr out and made sure it was aligned properly, wasting over an hour on playing around with it to confirm if it was a fault, bad design or operator error.
The next day, I called Sunbeam customer service, but the call was very short - the guy didn't even try to explain what the problem might be, but simply said to return to the retailer...Read more

Failed on first use and no customer support without receipt
A friend gave me this product because he had two after getting one free with a new machine. The one he gave me was brand new and still in packaging. I assembled it and turned it on, but realised I'd forgotten to add rubbery arm. I turned it off to put the arm on and then it wouldn't turn on again. I took it apart and reassembled it several times but to no avail. I contacted customer service who advised they could not do anything without me having a receipt. Admittedly I haven't lost any money because this was a gift, but I have wasted an hour of my time and now this thing is going in the bin. Do not touch this product with a barge-pole. Never had a more shoddy experience in my life.

Been used daily for 5 years - hasn't skipped a beat.
You probably need to be wary about reviews on the sunbeam cafe series grinder and em6910 coffee machine. This is a manual coffee machine and it takes a lot of practice to get a good brew happening. It probably took me months to find the best grind and tamping method before my coffee was decent. Reviewers that have had the machines for a short time and complain probably aren't doing it right. These are great machines and produce wonderful coffee if you're prepared to practice - I've had the grinder for 5 years, and yes it's messy - mine sits on ...Read more

Broken after two uses
We recently bought the EM0440 coffee grinder as part of a deal at The Good Guys. We have used it twice. After that the button that starts the actual grinding of the coffee no longer worked when we attached the arm that the grinds would go into. We now have a coffee machine without a grinder. What a waste of money.
Shocking quality, broke after two uses.

Poor product
I bought one of these today 07/07/2013 brand new and I took it home looking forward to a better cup of coffee. I could hardly grind half a teaspoon of coffee grind with it as the coffee would not come out and it just built up in the been holder and around the burrs. I followed the assembly instructions in the booklet that came with it. Thinking I had done something wrong I emptied it and took out the top burr to check it, then re-assembled as per the instruction booklet. I then put beans into the hopper and retried to get it to work but to no avail. I got the same result as before.
I won't be buying this product again and will save to buy a decent grinder.
Doesn't work.

Effective but messy
This grinder has now probably ground 3-4 shots of coffee every day for three years and really lends to making a good espresso, so it has been extremely reliable and not malfunctioned in any way. My only peeve is the amount of mess it makes and how much coffee stays stuck in the spout. A gentle thump or wibble of the grinder gets rid of most of this, but unfortunately it feels like such a waste of coffee. Also would be nice if it had a function that lets you set how much coffee to grind.
Effective, reliable.
Messy, but wasteful.

Another negative Sunbeam experience
I purchased this to go with a Sunbeam coffee machine, both of which have now been returned.
Does this grinder grind coffee beans? Yes, but not well. I found that it couldn't grind fine enough for espresso on my machine (now a Gaggia Classic), and there was not good consistency in the grind at any of the settings I tried.
Another huge flaw of this grinder was its retention of ground coffee in the unit after the grind. I tried tips as suggested by others - stopping early, shaking the grinder violently so the remaining ground coffee would co...Read more
me out into my portafilter - but still heaps of coffee remains behind. As a result, you inevitably get stale coffee grinds in every future cup of coffee you brew unless you empty and clean the grinder after every single use. NOT user-friendly. I have now purchased a Baratza for only $23 more, and the difference in quality is astounding. Might be OK for those look to grind for french press and like brewing methods, but avoid for shots of espresso. If you do take a risk on this grinder, be sure to buy it from somewhere with a liberal return policy. David Jones were great about it. Price, until I realised you get what you pay for. Brand - same as my initial coffee machine - until I realised it is rubbish. Poor grind - not fine enough for true espresso; inconsistent. So messy and retains waaaaaaaay to much ground coffee, giving you a dose of stale grind with every future use (unless you spend ages emptying and cleaning it - no thanks).2 comments
I have found mine superb, from reading your review I tend to believe you either didnt use the machines properly or are just anti Sunbeam. Not a fair review.

burr) and one Breville (conical burr) I've owned or tested before and so happens was cheaper. I dunno how miserychick couldn't get a fine enough grind, on 0-1 it's so fine even a commercial San Marco has problems - I work on 8-11 depending on the type and age of roast for a perfect grind, one setting isn't good enough (at 6 my EM6900 can't extract). But those who say messy, I have to agree. All my coffee grinders I've owned have been plastic bodied (including this one and all incidently, a non-earthed plug) - and all generate static during grinding (like a mini Van-der Graaf). This leads to the 'fly-away' coffee as it leaves the spout and it tends to spread everywhere. I suspect ambient humidity might play a role also. I've noticed that more upmarket models with metal bodies (and consequently must have earthed plugs) may discharge their static to earth and so not suffer the same problem or to a lesser degree, but I've not been able to experiment on this. Only that my brother was given a mini-Mazzer and he doesn't get the static problem, however it's 9 times the price and I can still grind just as well.Similar opinion? The best Burr grinder on the market for under $100.
This grinder is absolutely fantastic! No mess, if you've had the rubber nozzle included which limits the grind mess to almost nothing. Produces a fantastic espresso grind (set to 11) and above average espresso with my Delonghi ECO310BK :)
Recommend to anyone who wants a good cafe style grinder, that doesnt want to settle for blade, and also doesnt want to splash out on a $200+ grinder! You'll get good, creamy espresso every time if you set your grind to 11, tamp properly, and dose the right amount of coffee into your Portafilter :D
Consistent grind, fast and easy, little to no mess (make sure the rubber nozzle is included), bang for buck!

Excellent
I would recommend this grinder to anyone. It is reasonably priced (but not super cheap) and it has worked really well over time. Holds a good amount of beans for home use and grinds on demand which I love.
Fantastic home grinder that has multiple settings (grind how you want, depending on what you are making the coffee with).
I love that it grinds on demand by simply laying the coffee basket/handle in it.
I really can't think of any. Ours is always messy but that is because coffee grinds are hard to clean up at the best of times!

Overall I think this is a fantastic grinder. You can almost set it up intuitively out of the box without reading the instructions. This is my first grinder (after previously using pre-ground beans) and the coffee tastes great. It has a ton of settings for how fine you want the grind depending on the use. I would recommend this machine to anyone.
So easy to use, looks great, nothing complicated about it. Works well every time.
None yet- though it was given to me as a gift so I don't know what the price was. Noise level can be a little loud sometimes, but then again you are grinding beans!

Good
I never knew I wanted a grinder until I used this, it grinds great coffee, which makes great coffee. I would heartily recommend it as a purchase.
An even grind is the result of this grinder, which produces perfect, well ground coffee, for a fantastic taste after brewing. It is so handy to be able to place the 'group head'(okay the thing that holds the ground coffee beans) directly under the grinder, and go straight to the expresso machine.
It does splay a little ground coffee under the grinder, and around the frame, so a little messy, but I can put up with that.

Perfect grinding machine that does not crash coffee beans, but really grind them to perfection
We own this machine for about 3 years and we used it minimum once a day.
It has variable grinding adjustment and we can finally have real good Turkish
coffee.
When it comes to hopper, if you call Sunbeam, they post you free plastic extension. I found it very practical. This stopped spill of coffee dust around my appliance cabinet. I thing, that the plastic extension should have been included in box, when I bought it.
This coffee grinder was obviously not designed for occasional use! This is everyday use item and that is the reason why you don’t have to clean it after every use.
Reliable real grinding machine with 24 setting adjustments
The plastic extension should have been included in box, when I bought it.

Grinds perfectly, but makes a hell of a mess!
Came free with my Sunbeam coffee machine (it's what sealed the deal when deciding which to choose).
You can easily change the grind size to suit. The coffee we get out is delicious with a rich crema.
But when grinding into the group handle the coffee goes everywhere!! Our bench is constantly covered with ground coffee.
good grind, great coffee
It's messy

Interesting mine doesnt go everywhere, the odd bit on the bench but not how you describe. Goes very well into the group handle. And i dont use the nozzle.

Good grinder but poor hopper and messy
I got the 0480 conical burr grinder a few years ago after trying a couple of cheaper Sunbeam grinders.
The cheaper machines would not grind fine enough on the finest setting and were basically useless.
This machine is relatively low cost but feels very robust (solid) and has a great range of 30 odd settings.
It grinds nice and slow and the big burrs dissipate the heat so doesn't burn the coffee.
I used to grind at 13 for the Sunbeam Cafe machine but now use number 4 for the Rancillio Silvia which needs a fine grind.
The hopper is ...Read more

Just okay...
I got this cheap ($90 delivered to a rural area in 2009) I wanted the conical burr and didn't want to splash out for something more expensive when I wasn't considering upgrading my Sunbeam EM6910.
For the Sunbeam or other home machines in the lower price bracket, this grinder does a fine job. It seems reliable after more than two years of service and seems consistent in grind also.
My main complaint is the design! It is SOOOOOO messy, if you are not super gentle and careful when grinding you will knock the holder off and spill your coffee...Read more
everywhere, the tray won't catch the coffee because it is not attached and so is never where you want it to be (i.e. it doesn't stay tucked into the base of the grinder) Taking off the hopper is very hazardous as the lid does not stay on, rather, it just sits on top - as noted previously the beans also fall out of the bottom which does not close properly. Cleaning is a nightmare - the amount of ground coffee left in the machine is unacceptable - you don't want this in you cup the next day so it needs to be cleaned out.2 comments

falling out the top and bottom is not an issue for me. The main thing I would like to see improved is the amount of ground coffee that is left 'in transit' so to speak, I usually grind and when I almost have enough I bang the top of my grinder a few times to try and empty out the remaining ground coffee (this does probably increase the mess I make, but I hate the idea of stale coffee in the next days cup)Similar opinion? Hello Wayne C.
There is a toggle on the back of the unit between the hopper and the Grind adjustment collar.
Turn that and the beans will fall to the grinder.
