TomTom Via 280 (page 4 of 4)
Rubbish
Having owned the original Tom Tom for about 6 years with no worries, the 280 was a replacement and just kept dying, I kept having to plug it into my computer, it would not last more than 5 minutes in any car we used. Today I took it back to JB and they replaced it with a NAVMAN. The lady next to me had the same issues with the Tom Tom and was getting hers replaced as well. The salesman said the Tom Tom was once the leader however, they appear to have more problems with them which is sad, the original Tom tom was a great machine, the new 280 is a disaster.
light and big screen
would only last 5 minutes, had to keep charging it on the computer as it wouldnt charge through the cigarette lighter device.

GPS - Tom Tom Via 280
I purchased this GPS unit almost 3 months ago - it's the best one of three that I've owned (others were Navman and Garmin) by 'a mile', and is a truly excellent product. Having read many negative product reviews on the Via 280 prior to purchase, I was admittedly a little reluctant to proceed to purchase. However, the positive reviews on this product made me wonder about the motive of many of the negative reviewers, and I decided to proceed. Having had no problems at all setting it up (followed the very clear instructions properly), I have ha...
Read mored a great run from it, with all expectations met. In fact, it's 'a breeze' to operate and use. My guess now is that many of the negative reviewers had/have problems due to their own inabilities with what is simple technology leading to crankiness channeled against the product! To sum up, prospective buyers should not be 'put off' by negative reviews - this is an easy-to-drive, outstanding GPS unit. (And, no, I have nothing whatsoever to do with the Tom Tom manufacturer or its agents). Value for money ($162), very reliable, easy to set up and operate, excellent display. Occasionally slow in detecting satellites, but patience is a virtue.Good product -VIA 280

Tom Tom VIA 280 GPS 5 Inch
purchased this unit today to replace my old 2008 model Tom Tom One XL which finally gave up the ghost!
just wanted a basic unit with lifetime free maps and this fitted my requirements.
Had a little bother working out the correct use of the mount which ended up being really easy once I sorted out the correct alignment. Wow it's pretty advanced since the 2008 XL. Contary to other reviews it all works a treat. I love the smartphone style keyboard and the Voice commands work a treat.
Probably don't intend using the bluetooth as I already h...
Read moreave a Blueant S4 unit for hands free calls. Spoken street names and speed/redlight camera warnings will be helpful to some but I probably don't need them as I am 63 years old and just cruising in the slow lane. regards Bill Ease of use as I am a long term Tom Tom user! voice command! spoken Street names! 5" screenI have recently purchased a Via 280. On a recent trip the unit performed well.

Rubbish not to buy
Keeps freeing and needs resetting all the time its done this from new, have lots of trouble getting an address into it, it came with free map updates but tom tom's web site wont reconise the right model and wants you to pay for them
its 6 weeks old hardly used as it dont work properly
Now has frozen and wont reset
I would not recommend this to anybody at all
It was money well wasted
Avoid like the plague
TomTom gave this product to me to use and I'm real glad I didn't pay for it.
It is clearly not ready for the market and the MyTomTom support site, which needs to be accessed to get updates, is one of the most user unfriendly web sites ever designed. You can not access the support web site from the TomTom dashboard on your computer and the unit requires a crash re-boot to successfully download updates.
According to TomTom each unit you own must be registered with it's own separate email address or else you will over-write the data on oth...
Read moreer units you may own - woe betide anyone who forgets to go through the overly complicate procedure to allow you to connect more than one unit to your computer. TomTom has 'updated', and I use this word with some hesitation, their Australian maps for the Via series and they're riddled with errors not found on their older models. None of my friends can get the voice recognition to understand the most basic of instructions. Plenty of other faults exist but you should be getting the general picture by now. I find little to recommend the Via 280 and will be going back to my tried and trusty TomTom XL340. it was free Continuous re-booting required to get updates, inaccurate maps, poor voice recognition, poor support and much much more.Tom-tom via 280
