Still perfect.
Done over 700ks now and still perfect. Who'd a thought it?
Update: 2500ks and maybe more perfect. In my experience diesels take about 5000 to run in and they get quieter and smoother until then.

2008 toyota v8 diesel land cruiser tray,
Am I the only person who hates his cruiser? quote, it is the worst vehicle I have owned since a 1958 land rover! for example, the oil filter, the air filter, the snorkel, the distance and plumbing air has to go through to get into engine, the exhaust system, the turbo does not kick in early enough, cant find the starter motor, the alternator height above sea level, to name a few. Track and chassis width, gear ratios and draw bar breaking off, the dangerous curved rear view mirrors, to name a few more before I stop to take another breath! Now,...Read more
servicing, the worst oil filter I have ever seen, the air filter, looks like a big pot scrubber, the air filter box and filter get wet in driving rain! changing the stupid little fuel filter is a nightmare! breath, Now, driving, the turbo does not kick in till over 2000 revs, too late, the pulling to left all day is very tiring, and checking if your game enough to pass a fuel stop on a long trip make owning and driving a nightmare! Summing up, I use Paul Keatings word, recalcitrant,! The best vehicle I ever owned, was a 2002 Hilux twin cab...Question, what do I replace it with? cheerio. greg e.

No frills do it all tough 4wd
Bought a 76 series GXL new over a year ago. I have owned 5 Patrols in the past and I couldn't be happier with the switch to Toyota. Would have bought another Patrol but the 3.0 diesel is gutless and the vehicle too heavy.
It has been faultless, have done almost 20k kms without an issue. Some very hard 4wding has been done and with the factory lockers, not much stops it unless you get hung up on the diffs. It is set up as a tourer as we have two young kids.
The kids LOVE it! I think mainly because of the large windows. I have to battle t...Read more
he wife for the keys because she also loves it. If you want a 4wd that will truly go just about anywhere in this country in standard condition this is the car. It has none of the fancy stuff you don't need, which saves weight and keeps it simple (read, less things to go wrong). I was a one eyed Patrol fan boy for a long time and this car has me more than impressed. Engine, reliable, simple, very capable 4wd, vision, seating position. Cost, if I have to be picky... my knee hits on the power window switches, no cruise control.

I have been dreaming about LandCruisers since 2008. That bonnet scoop and distinct features caught my eye, and got me looking at older ones for myself. But because of their resale value, were too much for my budget. But coming to sixteen and getting my license got me talking my mum in getting one through nova leasing my dream could come true. I like them for the low end torque, extreme reliability and no-nonsense practicality, why would you want to be hitting all these fancy buttons, when most people use them because they are more appealing tha...Read more

Meeting expectations
Nearly five years on since purchase as new vehicle and my lc gxl v8 turbo trayback continues to deliver on all fronts. A no frills unit supplemented by fitting cruise control and in dash unit inclusive of cd, radio, gps etc. Also fitted better handling tyres after factory dunlops were worn. Frankly the flak that this vehicle copped on release was in the main not well founded other than the lack of airbags. For the type of vehicle handling is very good. Power for towing best in class with tremendous torque. One has to remember this is not tight ...Read more

Best 4WD ever owned. If you want something that is flashy with bling then this is not the vehicle for you.
If you want something that has great towing capacity, treats hills with contempt & gives you the confidence that you can go anywhere than you can't go past the TD V8. If you resist the urge to feel the power on acceleration the fuel consumption isn't an issue. Over 100,000km and hasn't missed a beat.
Reliability, resale value, simplicity

Series 79 Outback Touring
Superb vehicle for traveling around Australia. Cabchassis with aluminum canopy.
Suspension needs upgrade to carry any sort of weight but once done it is a great vehicle for rough roads. Handle corrugations well and will go just about anywhere. Seats improved with thick sheep skin covers and we found them to be comfortable over long trips. Good dust proofing in cabin. Great visibility from high driving position.
Go anywhere vehicle. Carrying capacity. Long range with 180lr fuel tanks. Suprisingly good fuel economy.
Hugh turning circle. No rear visibility (has to have reversing camera). Limited storage in cabin.

Ultimate work tool
Having upgraded from a 1995 model cruiser the difference in performance is truely amazing. Running a drilling business and pulling the 3.5t daily is no longer a shoulder lane deal! This ute can still peal away at the lights and leave similarly loaded utes for dead. It's also really comfortable and a pleasure to drive after a long day at work unlike the older more rigid model. Unhitched the ute becomes an absolute weapon and more than keeps up with traffic carrying big loads as though they weren't there. In fact I've found it handles a lot bette...Read more
r with a load. Loaded with say 300kg of gear it will take off at a similar pace to any average car... still not used to that! I was a little anxious about the price to say the least (72000 with all options) but done through the business it works out well and I feel a lot more confident in terms of maintenance issues. The older variant was starting to do gearboxes and axles etc. I would recommend this truck for a tradie or the like who needs the power especially in regard to towing but otherwise the Hilux is a cheaper and just as capable option. Power, old school qualities, suspension, simplistic dash instrumentation etc, taller seating positiion, larger cab and improved looks Cost, position of cigarette lighter socket (knuckle duster when something plugged in), sun visor too big restricting vision for tall people, no headlight on warning beeper2 comments

You spend the money and would want to be satisfied. I am. For more than that, the ute is a great step-up and for once performs to the Toyota press releases. What you read is what you get. Steep sand dune hill climbs that would stall my old ute just seem too easy with this new ute. Dragging my 1 tonne work trailer on and off site is too easy. Overtaking triple semi-trailers when I am fully loaded with a trailer but still pumping 130km/h up hill - too easy.
I bought the GXL trayback. After owning two previous trayback utes this one is so much be...Read more

My partner and I bought the Troop Carrier GXL in Sandy Taupe (beige). Drove it out of the showroom in Sydney and up to Cairns!! This is an awesome vehicle. Nothing comes close to this and never will. It's a stripped down, go-anywhere mean machine. The fuel economy is awesome considering you drive it normally e.g. don't pull away fast at lights, build acceleration evenly etc. Which really applies to any car. The engine is smooth, very responsive and gear shifting is easy. GXL has bucket seats which are comfy. Overall it's worth the price tag eve...Read more
n though it's a simple vehicle. I don't want the fancy electronics that's in most of the other 4x4s; the more you have, the more can go wrong. Thanks Toyota for keepin' it real!! Awesome TD V8 Engine, surprisingly good fuel economy (even when towing), simple easy to use dash layout, reliability, space, purposely omitted fancy electronics, driver visibility, fuel tank capacity, smoothness and quietness of engine. Get-the-hell-outta-my-way presence!! Tee hee!! Toyota only bring the Troop Carrier in three colours, while all the other shapes get great choices. I understand considering this shape mainly goes underground and mines only want white. No overfender flares... I mis-read the brochure and thought it had them being the GXL, but only applies to Trayback GXL. Air-con should be standard, that's just silly. 6-10 month wait from day you sign contract. Serious under-supply due to incorrect sales forecast by Toyota. The normal wait is 3 months. But it's worth it!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

We bought this primarily as a pig hunting ute and I also use it to tow my horse float. It tows like nothings there even with two big horses and all the gear. Went back to using a mates old cruiser ute a few weeks ago as a one off and couldn't believe how slow it was. I would drive this car every day if I could. It's our toy and sits in the carport just waiting for the weekend.
Everything! Another great ute from Toyota. Pulls like a champion, accelerates like a mean machine and you can feel the power.
Umm, that we didn't buy two! Only thing is that sometimes I struggle parking it, but thats more me than the car.

Good
Great economy and power even when fully loaded and towing a caravan for our http://www.gray-nomad.com tours. The twin tanks are fantastic for long distance drivers it allows us to bypass the very expensive small fuel stops.
I chose the 'troopy', for it's fantastic storage space, I found the springs restrict how much I can carry and only being able to open the small door when the caravan is on, makes it less desirable that I would have liked as a stock carrier, I need to re think what stock I carry on our next trip, I've already had to do away ...Read more

Although I own the 4.2L straight 6 diesel version, it's a comfortable ride: well for a 4x4. It's the toughest thing ever built - there is nothing called a crumplezone in a LandCruisers vocabulary, the body panel are nuclear bunker strong, and as for the frame work; even stronger. Although they're getting a bit expensive these days ($50000-onwards) they will never break, their style will never grow old and they will keep on going like the tanks they are!! I bow to whoever designed this car and I highly recommend u buying one.

OK
With a big V8 diesel engine this rig is a beast. It's almost unstoppable. It goes alright on the highway and has some real grunt there as well. Toyota would really be doing themselves a favour to make just some minor improvements to the interior of this vehicle to bring it into this century.
A very sturdy and reliable go anywhere four wheel drive.
No cup holders. Very basically fitted out. The interior is 1980s vintage and hasn't been improved on at all. It even has cup cut outs in the glove box when you open that, that is how old the interior design vintage of this vehicle is.

Bad
Rough and tough, sort of. New tech can have a lot of downsides. Got these at work and they can't seem to handle water when it goes into the alternator. My old cruiser can... It would be good too if there was a choice of engines and transmissions. I would have preferred a 4 or 6 banger auto.
You'd be better off buying something older and putting a bit of money into it.
Value for money? NO!
Rough and tough, sort of. Powerful. Basic.
Too expensive for what you get. Not enough choice for overall set up engine and driveline. Prone to some elctronic and electrical problems.

Yes reliable and tough, but uncomfortable and overpriced. Toyota need some competition to stop them ripping us off.

Doesn't look much different from the old land cruiser but it does the job and so fun to drive. The seats are not as comfortable as many other utes around but it is no doubt the best ute to own that can handle anything. The seats are comfortable enough to get around. It's more about what this ute can do for its robustness and practicality. For the best diesel ute, you can't go wrong with the legendary land cruiser.
The best of the best 4wd drive to own and drive. Very sturdy and extremely reliable.
Not as comfortable as the new 4wd drive around.
