Best car I've owned.
I absolutely love my golf. It is so comfortable, lovely to drive, zippy, spacious for its size, fuel efficient & feels sturdy & safe. I fill the tank once every 2 weeks & we have halved our fuel usage compared to our previous car. Only complaint is that VW is a little more costly to service & repair if needed.

This is not quality!
I always wanted a Golf until I brought one. This is not quality. Under three years old and I've had to have the steering wheel, gear stick and hand break covers replaced - they put a cheap covering on them that looks great when you buy the car but, before long the top layering wears off! They won't replace under warranty or at least you have to really jump through hoops. I never thought I would say it but buy a Mazda or something like it instead. You won't regret it. Golfs are poorly made, lack quality and I just know after three years - you will regret it. Mine was brand new and I'm going back to a Mazda without a doubt! Don't do it.

Fantastic car- zippy, fuel efficient and perfect for my family
Have the 2011 trendline petrol golf wagon. Bought new and absolutely love it. So fuel efficient - close to 800km per tank. Fits my two children (with car seats in) and plenty of room in the boot for the pram, shopping, nappy bag etc.
Love the styling of the interior and the soft touch plastics throughout. air con is great and it's such a fun car to drive. Love putting it into sports mode and seeing what it can really do. Would highly recommend this car!

2011 Golf Wagon Diesel
In short a horrible car and equally horrible experience. After receiving the brand new car in mid 2011 within 3 months the engine dangerously lost power and cut out twice in heavy traffic. So 3 months after purchase it had to be towed back to the dealership twice. Volkswagen staff difficult to deal with and very unhelpful, didn't seem concerned at all that their new product seemed to have serious safety issues. Gearbox replaced but still experienced gearbox problems. The gearbox was replaced again as part of the recall this year but soon after...Read more
car completely lost power in traffic again and yet again towed back to dealership. This time they say it was another engine fault something to do with the gasket. Anyway when discussing the car with the service centre this last time we found out that if we did have to replace the gearbox again which is pretty likely at some point the car is out of warranty and it would cost around $4800 to replace. No confidence in this product, serious safety issues would never recommend it to anyone. fuel efficient but not worth it for the safety issues when it looses power in traffic engine dangerously cut out three months after purchase (brand new) and again a week later (after the dealership had supposedly fixed it) and again just recently.Similar opinion? 2012 MK6 VW Golf GTD DSG
Bought this brand new in 2012 as an upgrade from my previous 2008 Golf 103TDI Pacific. The 103TDI was my first diesel car and to be honest, it didn't really help cement my faith in diesel. The economy was fantastic. As I did a lot of highway driving, I frequently got close to 1,000km from a tank. But it sounded like a truck and there was a lot of turbo lag, especially from standstill in first gear. I hated first gear in that car.
I decided to try diesel again and got the GTD in 2012. First impression - so impressed!!! Not only does it look a...Read more
nd sound sporty but it drives like it too. This car is so well built. So solid and robust. I get anxious driving in heavy rain after an accident a few years back and the only time I don't is when I'm in this car. The only things I can find fault in is the suspension and the actual driving pleasure. Because VW are always under-stocked, I would not get any options on my car except a tow bar. I wanted to adaptive chassis but again, it wasn't available. Therefore, the ride is very stiff. It takes a while to notice mind you. It wasn't until I got back into my Mazda3 that I noticed how much more comfortable it was. And steering feedback, there isn't a whole lot. The car is almost too well built. It sticks to the road no matter what you do to it which I like. The DSG gearbox is great. I would've hated it if it hadn't had the 'sport' mode to hold the gear longer.Short gear changes annoy the pants off me. It hesitates sometimes at traffic lights if you want to take off quickly and sometimes it chooses a really funky gears for the situation. Last week was cruising downhill in 5th gear in normal drive mode and suddenly the car changed to 3rd gear. It was like it was getting ready to take off by the sound of the engine. I don't use the paddles; they seem really silly to me, especially when you know the car's just gonna choose the gear it wants in the end. The 8-speaker stereo is actually really good. I was surprised. It is so clear and the bass is vibrates the whole car. Can't fault it at all. Sounds like an aftermarket system to me. Very impressed. I love the little chrome highlights here and there and the flat-bottom steering wheel. The boot is spacious and easy to access with hands full of grocery bags.Similar opinion? 2011 Golf GTD 3 years on
Really great little car, smooth, economical and comfortable. Faults: A an air compressor for the aircon was not performing well and replaced without question under warranty. A soft ware issue caused issue at startup once resulting in ESC and power steering not working. This did not happen in motion. VW was great, had it fixed the same day after it was towed. A replacement car was offered. The car has been all over Australia and been taken some places a golf should not go. On the highway it just idles along at 4.1 l/100km (loaded with suitcases ...Read more
ect). This is better economy than our friends Lexus CT200h (Hybrid). The GTD also has much more room in the boot. The lexus struggles to fit two small suitcases in it. The layout of the vehicle is pretty good. I was impressed enough with it to buy another VW after it (Amarok) after having only JAP cars previously. I would probably go leather seats and sat nav next time. The fabric can look a bit ordinary after 3 years of travel, camping, bushwalking trips etc. Servicing was pretty much on par with Toyota/Subaru given the intervals. I previously had a Forester and had so many problems (blown head gaskets, blown radiators) with it that cost me thousands - this car is a very pleasant surprise. At 45,000 km haven't spend anything other fuel and service costs. Would recommend to those looking a quick economical touring hatch. Reliable, efficient, heaps of torque, great tourer. Expensive, but you get what you pay forSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Golf GTI 2011 model
Had Golf IV and was very tempted to change maker, however after long research and a lot of test drives went back to VW
Had car for ~2 years and love it, not a single issue that couldnt be fixed by general service
car it self looks great and doesn't look like over done try hard racing car (thats where most skylines fail), its a street car after all and at some point you want car for driving and not for showing off in front of 18 years olds
everything speed comfort performance without wannabe sport look
Few minor cosmetic details that could of been done better (like wires under acceleration pedal) etc very minor but ones you know where to look its never the same

Best Car Ever !
When I retired from work I decided to buy my first new car. After test driving about seven different cars I found that the VW Golf was the car for me. Now three years later I consider it one of the best decisions I have made. I just love driving it and have not had any problems at all. I do long interstate trips a lot and it never fails to impress . Such a good car !

Have owned my Golf now for 3 years and have only good things to say
As mentioned above I've owned my Golf GTI DSG now for 3 years and have only good things to say. Have heard from several people online that the DSG gear boxes can be an expensive replacement but I've never actually met anyone that has had to replace one. Cross my fingers! Very good car so far, couldn't be happier with interior quality and everyday drivability.
Quick enough for me, easy to live with on day to day basis, quality
potential failure (apparently) of DSG gear boxes

Looks really good on paper... only!
Our company bought 3 company cars from VW 3 months ago. Two of them had issues, and one still isn't fixed today. A car that doesn't work properly is bad enough, but when you receive conflicting information about it, it doesn't build confidence in the product or the company that sells it.
All VW's customer service has done so far is try to convince us that the car will eventually work, but except for well put deceiving sentences, we haven't seen any results in 3 months. This is a disgrace!
Nice to drive (when it works)
Not reliable, poor warranty services, and deceiving customer service.

Best car ever!!
I absolutely love our VW golf. We've had Ford Falcons, a Toyota Camry and a Honda Jazz and this is BY FAR the best.
Way better on fuel, but has just as much pep to get up big hills. I never get a sore bum, or back in this car, even on long trips.
We are expecting our first baby later this year and this car also has ISOFIX points which is good since the Australian standards will join the rest of the world next year and we can use modern car seats.
I also feel very safe in this car. It feels very solid and not tinny and flimsy like some...Read more

Terrible
Do not buy 2009 World Car of the Year VW Golf TSI Comfortline. A purchase I will continue to regret for sometime.
Great safety features. Handles well when going.
After 6 months the engine broke down. VW offered no assistance to rectify the problem other than to make we wait 5 weeks and counting for a replacement engine. Once the engine is replaced the transmission will need to be fixed and again I wait.

Solidly built! Safe! Smooth & quiet on the road and economic on fuel!
I bought my VW Golf 90 TSi with Comfort package brand new in December 2010. It's a beautifully solid feeling car which handles well on the road around the city or on the freeway/rural roads.
Safety rating was a primary concern for me and the Golf meets that requirement well. It feels as solid and sturdy as a Mercedes or Volvo but has the convenience/versatility of being a mid size hatchback (and at a much lower price).
The build quality is impressive and typically German. The interior is cozy (perhaps somewhat too enclosed compared to the...Read more
light and airy Peugeot 308). The seats are supportive but could be more comfortable. It's fuel economy is outstanding - I drive almost 800km (urban driving) on approximately 50L. However, I am uninpressed with it's reliability so far. It stalled within the first week and did it several more times in the following month. I returned it to the dealerships service centre who advised the DSG gearbox had a software glitch from the factory. They updated the software and it has improved. I then had to return it again within the month because it was running very rough and I was reluctant to pull out in traffic because it would almost stall and wouldn't take off reasonably fast. Again, they reprogrammed the software in the DSG gearbox.3 comments
if your DSG is jerky you have a $3500 problem from my experience (and other commentators). Check the mechatronic unit and make sure the person checking is honest.
My Golf is coming up due for 45,000 service. I don't drive it much these days and it sits in the garage most of the time. It had the mechatronics overhauled as part of the "voluntary" recall notice la... Read more
st year. However, that made no difference to the issues I have experienced. DSG is still jerky; changes up into high gears at extremely low revs and won't kick down; and the engine still mis-fires and back-fires frequently especially on cold start up. The 3 year warranty has now expired and I am going to take it to a different dealer. John Hughes Volkswagen have been of no assistance. In a moment of madness I nearly considered purchasing the new Mk 7 Golf TDi Highline because it's very nice but I don't think I could purchase a Volkswagen again after the experience I've had from Volkswagen Gruppe Australia and its authorised dealer.when Austral finally agreed to investigate my gearbox, they had to take it out before they could finally agree on the mechatronic problem. They scrutinised the log book and fortunately all services by... Read more
VW dealers. It now runs perfectly with a VERY smooth take up from stop. I see you are in Perth. I was fortunate - the dealer agreed finally the vehicle was virtually undriveable in situations ie start on a very steep hill, slowly ie in a multi story car park where our problem finally became so obvious (and much bad publicity on the problem surfaced world wide). The problem is VW Australia, in contrast to the rest of the world, covered up the problems but after four years finally came clean. The dealer, however honest he is, can't do anything if VW Australia are deceptive. I drove a bad transmission for four years before they came clean - that was my gripe. They have had much bad press - Australian motoring editor editorialised on new GTi unfavourably as a result. Perhaps you should ask the dealer to re approach them even though out or warranty. If it does not drive smoothly from start it is defective. They MAY have learnt their lesson after trashing their reputation for excellence. I have a 2016 TDI and from the day I took delivery, it has told me 100 times to change the battery key. I check the battery, even put a new one in, and guess what? Still the same. Most times my key will unlock the car when I grab the door handle but often not, so I use the unlock button on the key case. This key has just died completely and VW want $620 for a new one, yes it's true !!

Have golf 118 tsi ( the s and I are red in colour). There is oil coming into air intake pipe which then drips under the air filter. Have to top it up all the time. My model is 2010. The gear box shudders all the time on take off. However, it suddenly lost power on the Hume Highway when I was travelling at 110 km. Nearly got rammed at the back. Only has 103 000 km on it. What could it be?

Sorry never had an issue like this so I would contact the manufacturer :)
Lucky you. Did some searching and found heaps of other people with engine and gearbox problems in this model. Recalls in most countries. Looks like the consumer protection and government have been asleep at the wheel. My most scary experience was the sudden loss of power on the highway.
Also owned a Mk 6 golf. Engines in that era were renowned for burning a reasonable amount oil, mine about 1 litre per 5000kms; VW has stated that this isn't problematic. Leaking oil is another issue that needs expert advice. Is it a manual? If so, the shudder at take off is symptomatic of a warped clutch plate, which is not uncommon at the km's yours has done and all clutches do have a limited lifespan. No cheap fix, may need a new clutch. The loss of power is concerning and sounds like the car has gone into limp mode due to a detected failure of some system. All these issues warrant a return to the dealer for testing.

ple complaining about the vw golf as it is the same bran as the Audi, Skoda and Seat. The problem we have in Australia is we treat Diesel cars the same as petrol, Deisel must be warmed up prior to driving. More frequent oil changes and the use of the gears must be slowly run in before 25,000kms, any questions about the vw or audi as they have the same platform, you cannot compromise on quality, just lack of respect for a car.
