Good car but BECOMES expensive
2 warranty recalls, 1 warranty repair (and a snow trip cut short in the middle of the trip), in 6 years and 60,000 km, left indicator replaced (AUD 450), rear hood light stopped working (not worth spending AUD 265 to fix it), and clutch replaced (AUD 2,560), none of them related to aggressive driving (there was never any). The maths - cheaper to fix the car than buy another one! Does it make you happy though? No.!!

Don't buy a VW
VW undoubtedly make a fantastic driving car, unfortunately they also make cars with inbuilt manufacturing faults which they then refuse to acknowledge once the car is out of warranty. If this was only a small percentage of the cars made it may not be an issue but there are far too many cases of owners having to foot ridiculous repair bills for mechanical failures on low mileage fully dealer serviced cars. My own experience was with my MkVI GTI with 79000km's and which had only ever been serviced by VW dealers, when the timing chain tensioner fa...Read more
iled, I was left with a $3000 repair bill for what is a common problem for this model (VW even issued a dealer bulletin #TB-15-12-01 in 2012 to highlight the problem). But in my dealings with VW and their dealers I found they arrogantly dismissed my claims for Goodwill by simply stating the car is out of warranty. Buying a VW is a gamble it's like playing Russian roulette but in this case too many barrels are loaded. The only way to send a message to VW to change their way s and attitude is to stop buying them.

Don't do it!
Bought our Mark6 golf 7 months ago and it is by far our biggest regret in our lives (honestly) I have just traded it in and come home to a vodka on the rocks to celebrate!!!
Let me start off by saying we bought into the golf knowing about the common clutch pack fault with this model. When we bought privately for such a cheap price we thought we would take a risk! The clutches had been replaced 2 years before we bought it so we figured it would be fine...

Major design flaws that can cause major engine failure
Purchased a Golf GTI MK6 2012 Auto and have had her for two weeks. Recently dropped her off for the 70,000km service ( only has 66000kms with full-service history) and found out that the rattle noise from start-up is not my cam tensioner as I have the revised version where the original was a design fault ( can cause the chain to jump teeth engine damaged occurs) but it is a non-return valve that is inside the cylinder head. To get to this part you have to either have the whole engine out then the head off to access it if it fails due to a des...Read more
ign flaw or the engine can stay in the engine bay, however, the head has to come off still. This is an 8-hour job charged at $150 an hour for labour for a design flaw by Volkswagen?!?! If this part fails, you will also need to check the camshafts, cylinder head and bearing saddle for scoring. Called Customer Service who stated that I'd have to pay the upfront fee's and they might consider a goodwill case and reimburse some of the money. Absolutely horrid, all of your VW Technicians know this is a design flaw and you are trying to charge the consumer for a design flaw by VW. Shame on you!1 comment

Great drive while it lasts...
This is a great car to drive. It's comfortable, handles well and has plenty of power. Then the third piston cracks (wish I'd read those forums before I bought it) and it costs $15,000 to replace the engine or $8000 to recondition it.
Do yourself a favor and get something reliable.

Pretty impressive
We bought this Golf wagon as a more economical daily driver for my wife instead of the VE Commodore sportswagon she's been using. It does everything well; very responsive yet very economical, light and pleasant to drive, quiet, comfortable and remarkably spacious. It also has huge front brakes. Handling is excellent and despite being front wheel drive it has a great turning circle. The cargo space is incredible for a car of this size. The technical features are comprehensive and user friendly, as are the controls and instruments. Only thing lac...Read more
king is a reversing camera but for $250 we had reversing sensors fitted by the dealer. It's such a willing little workhorse we tend to use it the most out of our three cars. I find the 1.4 litre turbo petrol engine gives great performance (118 kw or 160 bhp and a claimed 8.3 seconds 0-100 kph.) Engine technology has come a long way since I last had a car with a four cylinder engine! As a second hand vehicle with low km's it is proving to be great value for money.Similar opinion? What a good car
I own 3 - Mk 6- 2.0litre 2x Manual models 1x Auto
I look after all of these cars myself ( Own Automotive Workshop )
Firstly the overall package is wonderfull If you into Highway work, BUY the Manual So much better performance & fuel economy. The automatic on the other hand is a much better bet for city driving. There is a lot talk about the reliability of the DSG trans. Service religiously every 40,000 km. The system is quite aggressive on transmission oil and can easily burn the additives in the oil. I've had a problem with all 3 cars wit...Read more

Golf Diesel
This has proven to be an excellent purchase and ownership experience. The car is a 2010 Golf Diesel with "sports" package (seats, wheels, fog lights, dual zone climate control etc). The car performs brilliantly around town and on the freeway with great economy (4.9l/100km) on the freeway and performance. The enormous torque makes city driving a real hoot. The car is beautifully put together and after six years and 95k km's, it has been absolutely trouble-free and it feels brand new.

VW Golf MK6 118tsi 7Spd DSG
Let start off by saying, the little 1.4L Twin Charged engine has great power and punch for how small it is, and the sound system and a few bits of tech are cool. It stops there.
I bought mine at 76xxx Kms, one owner with full VW service history. So very lucky under warranty, I got the timing chain done which was at 80k kms! The car would always throw up defect faults, everytime I started it, but VW always said there was no errors!
Now, to the dry clutch 7spd DSG gearbox... Do NOT buy a auto Golf mk6. Ever! It was the worst gearbox I have ...Read more

Don't do it!!!!
Disaster. VW is the most arrogant and unprofessional company I've ever dealt with. Air Cond failed at 3.5 years. $1250 to replace. Didn't want to know about it. Absolutely the most unprofessional people I have ever dealt with. No back up of their brand whatsoever. Never will I ever buy another VW. More problems continued after that. Watch out for dodgy gear box, and so much more.

Very impressive car
I bought my 2009 model GTI second hand in 2012 with 40000kms on the clock. My wife and I have since covered another 35000kms and there has not been one single problem with the car. It is fun to drive, quick yet very economical and the build quality is superb.
Only two minor criticisms - the ride can be a little jiggly on some lumpy suburban back streets and the standard 17 inch wheels look a bit basic (although they're very easy to clean).

Worst experience with a car ever!
What a piece of junk this car has turned out to be! bought my car brand new and noticed early on that it made a grinding noise when I started it and acceleration was shuddery. Reported issues to Volkswagen during early servicing but they said nothing was wrong with it. Fast forward five years I'm told it needs almost 10 grand of work done and Volkswagen will only agree to cover 50% of parts under their good will claims. If I'd done average km's then this issue would have happened while the car was still under warranty but Volkswagen don't care ...Read more
and have told me their decision is final. It might be worth noting at this point that my car only has 42,000km on it - which is half or less than the national average. Clearly any car that needs serious engine work after such low km's, no matter if it's out of warranty, was faulty from the beginning. So unsurprisingly my advice to everyone out there is don't buy a Volkswagen. Although there are known issues with this make and model (a simple Google search will confirm this) I believe they have fixed these problems in the newer models. The reason you shouldn't by a golf or any other Volkswagen is because of how Volkswagen treat their customers. They quite simply don't care and won't do right by you if anything goes wrong.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Best Value Car ever! Fast, reliable, fuel efficient and very cheap to maintain!
Performance and handling is like a high end car, probably almost as good as a BMW.
The interior is perfect, very nice stylish aluminium finishes and everything is where it should be.
Amazing running costs, averaging 8L per 100km and thats amazing for a fast car.
Registration, Greenslip and comprehensive insurance is cheap.
P plate legal even though it's a 2L Turbo.
Sound system is amazing.

The Most Expensive Lemon
I bought my Golf TSI Comfort Line in 2009 brand new, thinking that it will be hassle free, etc. I was wrong! Problems started after the first service, shuttling, losing the power, stopping in the middle of the road, doesn't start, power exceeding on downhill, you come to your car and all the windows down but only one is up. All were very scary. Everytime when I took the car back to the dealer they said "Couldn't find anything, nothing is wrong, a little software error, etc. until the big news hit the media about the poor lady dying on the highw...Read more
ay." Suddenly they started to find the problems and changing this, changing that replacing this, etc. at the end of every repair they said it is a good will of VW that they are not charging anything. My car was already under warranty what were you talking about? Anyway I regret that I didn't sell the car after the first incident but on the other hand how can you sell something if you know that somebody else will suffer. Now back to square one, car doesn't start. They say starter motor needs to be change but will cost $900. I argue with them that I experienced this problem before, they say oh it was because of Mechatron before but now it is starter motor. Would you believe them!!! I believe all Golf sufferers need to come together and do something. Legal action for those lemons that we had to stuck with!! GRRRR..Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Golf Gti
Purchased thd Golf gti new in 2011. Our 1st VW. Car is now 4 years old and has almost 100,000 k's on it. The car is an absolute joy to drive, fast or just normally. My wife mostly drives it and loves the car. The interior appointment is beaultiful in leather and with the sunroof. It's never had anything go wrong and still doesn't even have a rattle any where.
The only negatives are the run flat tyres and VW's service costs. But its out of warranty so the local guy looks after it.
Fuel averages 8.6 ltr/100k around town and now that you can use E10 (94 octane) fuel is cheaper.

Great Car
I have had the Golf for around 18 months. Suits someone who wants:
Economical fuel consumption 6.6 lt/100km (combined)
Sprightly performance
Great build quality
Huge range of features as standard
Relatively cheap as a second hand vehicle. (Avoid diesel engines at this stage)
This car has a DSG (Double shift gears) sports auto gearbox. Ensure the gearbox oil has been replace every 50,000km. Also check that the 7 speed mechatronics unit has been replaced under recall. This does not affect the later models MY12 onwards.
Just a great all round car.

VW Australia suck - especially Jackson VW in Launceston, Tasmania
Monopolising on their single outlet status in 2009, deceptive, obfuscating, unhelpful, expensive, patronising liars. I bought the vehicle in Victoria, as these grubs could not match the price - their quote was some $3000 more, including allowing for a flight Devonport-Melbourne, and the ferry trip back. I had them install the MDI for iPhone at the first service. (4700+). It stopped the standard 3mm input plug from working, has never worked properly, and despite several attempts to fix it they never did, but always assured me 'this works with o...Read more
ur phones'. Their quite for the 20k service was nearly $1,300! Gowan's in Devonport did this for $800. Despite worldwide social media documenting known problems with the DSG gearbox, and over 300,000 VW's being recalled in the US, Europe, China and Japan, VW Australia did the Ostrich, for months afterwards, and charged som ecustomers over $5000 to fix the gearbox, which eventally was replaced for free. Now, the emissions scandal in the US. What were they thinking? What greed, what astonishing arrogance and stupidity! Hitler would be proud; they shafted all of their customers in the US, for years. I have a 2016 TDI and from the day I took delivery, it has told me 100 times to change the battery key. I check the battery, even put a new one in, and guess what? Still the same. Most times my key will unlock the car when I grab the door handle but often not, so I use the unlock button on the key case. This key has just died completely and VW want $620 for a new one, yes it's true !!

Have golf 118 tsi ( the s and I are red in colour). There is oil coming into air intake pipe which then drips under the air filter. Have to top it up all the time. My model is 2010. The gear box shudders all the time on take off. However, it suddenly lost power on the Hume Highway when I was travelling at 110 km. Nearly got rammed at the back. Only has 103 000 km on it. What could it be?

Sorry never had an issue like this so I would contact the manufacturer :)
Lucky you. Did some searching and found heaps of other people with engine and gearbox problems in this model. Recalls in most countries. Looks like the consumer protection and government have been asleep at the wheel. My most scary experience was the sudden loss of power on the highway.
Also owned a Mk 6 golf. Engines in that era were renowned for burning a reasonable amount oil, mine about 1 litre per 5000kms; VW has stated that this isn't problematic. Leaking oil is another issue that needs expert advice. Is it a manual? If so, the shudder at take off is symptomatic of a warped clutch plate, which is not uncommon at the km's yours has done and all clutches do have a limited lifespan. No cheap fix, may need a new clutch. The loss of power is concerning and sounds like the car has gone into limp mode due to a detected failure of some system. All these issues warrant a return to the dealer for testing.
