This car is simply perfect
Great car all round. Handling, performance, styling (inside and out) and liveability are all the facets that make this car a great daily driver, and a little 'fun' when you want to. Driving in Race mode, and sports shift is where its at, but will hit your fuel economy. IF you drop back to Comfort mode or Eco, you can get economy down to 6-7L per 100km on the open road. The only downside is that i cant hook up a towball due to the AWD and exhaust system at the back end, but i have a second car that tows anyway. Will def buy again!

2010 TSI 118 was good until the engine failed, then a write off.
70K on the clock when the TSI 118 suffered compression loss on one cylinder. VW said it's too old (even with the low km) so they are unlikely to assist. It's effectively a write-off.
The car had some good power, and if it hadn't failed, it'd be good value for the small wagon (not many around in AU). It's DSG doesn't do well for low speeds (such as give way signs on a hill - would get a shudder and hesitation) and is laggy on full throttle. I found the delay between throttle and acceleration unbearable after my manual Mazda SP23. But most other...Read more
auto drivers might find it ok. All over I was moderately happy with the car for the price and performance until it failed. I'd avoid the older, low km TSI 118 because of this issue. You are paying for an implied reliability and longevity that isn't there. Better off getting a newer one with more km, which VW might assist with - a better gamble.Purchased in October 2021 for $16,500.00.

Brilliant car - great perceived quality
After 9 years with Tiguan TSI, it was time to upgrade/downgrade to a Golf. We were happy with the Tiguan, but didnt need the AWD and wanted something more economical.
The Golf is practical, fuel efficient, safe, quick, comfortable and a great perceived quality (everything just feels good quality). And when it comes with 5 years warranty, it just sealed the deal for us.
The service cost is more than a Toyota Corolla, but at least we do not need to visit the service centre every 10,000km

75000km and then take it to the junkyard
2011 model. Beautiful to drive.....reconditoned engine needed at 67000km ($6000). New water pump 74000km...($1200). Other random coolant leaks....a dog. Seems these problems are pretty common, read the other reviews! Was never driven hard. I'll never buy a VW again. Don't buy one of these second hand.

Performance and comfort. So fun!
This Manual GTI is my daily driver. I drive probably 100 KM per day and have racked up nearly 40,000 KM on my Golf thus far. Purchased June 28, 2018 with 45,000 on the clock.
Thankfully I work in the automotive trade, so servicing doesn't cost me an arm and a leg. It's still serviced through Volkswagen every time it's due. Nothing major yet, only serviceable items at this stage.
Being a young bloke (24) and a car enthusiast, this car is perfect for me. So quick and fun when you need it to be, but also so capable in terms of being comfortable ...Read more
for passengers on the road. Being completely objective I'll jot down my current observations, negative and positive. - Negatives 1. These cars are NOTORIOUS for electrical faults. I've had my fair share, which convenientally have disappeared. My horn stopped working randomly for about 3 weeks, then one day I pressed it and it worked again. My windows, which are auto (firm hold and they go down on their own) quite often will not work when firmly holding down, but will go up if I hold the switch myself.Purchased in June 2021 at Volkswagen Dealers for $26,850.00.

Owner and driver of 4 years~!
Have owned my mrk6 GTI for almost 4 years and done 110,000kms since buying, only major issues I've had owning it has been the water pump needed replacing @ 60,000kms (which is VERY common) and new coil packs @ 100,000kms (also common VW issue), other than that, its ran perfect! No gearbox issues, very reliable on fuel doing over 700kms to a 55L tank. Very quick daily, good to have power when you need it and don't get stuck in trouble getting out of places. Love my little red rocket to the moon and back!

Android Auto is unreliable and full of bugs
The idea is great and (when it works properly) it's terrific BUT it is so full of bugs. Every second time I plug my OnePlus 6 Android phone into the Android Auto USB it's hit or miss as to whether it will work... often it works for a while, then starts to wig out, e.g. won't read or take SMS messages, screen goes blank, stops functioning altogether. Have tried the new version and still same issues. Have removed the app and reloaded - no better. VW couldn't offer any help. Hopefully CarPlay works better for Apple users. These days I just use Bluetooth for music and forget about the other features.

Fantastic car all around
I have owned my car for 2 years now and done 40,000km and it hasn't missed a beat. The fuel economy is excellent, usually around 6.5l/100km in town and 5.5l/100km highway driving. I also use it to tow my boat (500kg) and it does it with ease. I would recommend this car to anyone who wants an affordable yet comfortable hatch that is brilliant to drive.

Good city car with some minor issues
Bought Golf 7 Highline with safety package and luxurious package in 2015 for my wife. Good city car and only done 30,000 km. Overall happy with it. I am six feet tall and fit in comfortably, more spacious than other small cars like Corolla, Mazda 3, Honda Civic, etc. Fast, solid. Like it's cornering light and adaptive cruise control.
Some minor issues need to mention before buying VW:
1. Don't like the start stop system, slow start when stop in red traffic light. I have to disable it every time before driving.
2. Battery dead just after three ...Read more

But its not a Golf GTI, mine is....
Car has commuted, school run, family holiday, camping, you name it we have Golfed to it. The car is used daily and the DSG has not missed a beat in 11 years. The car I used daily and is fantastic to drive, quick when required, comfortable sporty I love this car. Serviced initially by VW then by EMW it continue to go past 150K KMS. Its starting to get an oil leak and other problems on a ball joint but what service she has given me.

Exceptional customer service from VW Australia
We purchased a used 2013 VW Golf Highline in January 2022. It had 65,000klm on the clock and had been regularly serviced. Lovely car to drive, great handling, economical, and typically well finished German interior which is elegant and practical. After 4 months of ownership the car developed a shudder when taking off from the lights. This was diagnosed as the clutch packs being on the way out. Being well out of warranty we were quoted $2,800 for repairs. We had heard much bad press about VW and their customer service however I have nothing but ...Read more
praise. The dealership applied to VW Australia for a good will claim. After three days we received the news that VW Australia would replace the clutch packs at their cost. For a car that was three years out of warranty this is great customer service. For all of you who read the bad reports about owning a VW this is a good news story.Purchased in January 2021 for $15,500.00.

Fantastic
My wife and I bought a used mk7 Golf GTI with 134,000 km on it! (manual). It still looks, feels and drives like a new car. Our family with 2 kids are very tall and we find this a fantastic, and fun, primary car. It tows well too.
With the addition of a roof pod there is lots of luggage space for holidays.
The only problem we've had is a flat battery.

Great car, poor manufacturer backup
Quiet, comfortable, great to drive, great stereo with Apple CarPlay. My 3rd Golf and 5th VW over 24 years. Servicing is expensive but 12 months, 15,000km.
Have had repeated faults with ACC/Lane Assist. Sudden dramatic turn of the wheel, almost crashed - much more than the usual slight tug - then into fault within 20 seconds. Went to the dealer (Norris VW, Kedron) and they immediately started talking money - over $500 to fix - no warranty cover as they insisted there must have been an "external influence" causing a "sudden drastic change in sus...Read more

VW Golf 90Tsi constant issues.
After the first year I noticed my car stalling, the staff didn’t have a clue what was going on.
They checked it, did a software update and said it was good to go. The car then stalled and died in the car park of VW servicing centre off James Ruse Drive. Shortly after this they replaced my mechatronics unit and the car was ok for another year.
Same issue happened again. New mechatronics unit was ordered. Car was ok to drive for another 2-3 years. Luckily all under warranty.
5th year of owning the vehicle same thing happened again. Replaced t...Read more
he mechatronics this time at my own cost because Volkswagen said the vehicle was out of warranty and that driving a car 25,000 kms a year was ‘excessive’. Mind you we are up to the 4th mechatronics replacement on a vehicle they look after. This time I had to pay for it despite history showing a constant issue with this part being fitted into my car. After a lot of back and forth i ended up paying the $3000 for the mechatronics unit to get the car back on the rd only for the gearbox to fail less than 6 months later (gear fork somehow snapped off) and Volkswagen asked for another $7k to replace. Avoid this car if you can - google all the issues this vehicle had from previous owners: you will also notice a lot of the same vehicle for sale with ‘no drive’.Purchased in August 2021.

Economic and powerful
Ive used this 2007 tdi Sportline manual model for 4 years now, and I do 60K kms per year.
Apart from the normal wear and tear, its been a rock.
Only use premium fuels in VWs as I believe the hi spec engines need it.
The now outdated CD navi system packed it in a couple of years ago, but big deal.
Quality of interior is in a class on its own compared to its japanese/ korean competitors.
And I live only 300 meters from the beach, and no sign of any rust.
Im buying another one......

Questions & Answers
MikeShearerasked
Golf 92TSI 2016 bought new. Had to have the clutch replaced after 23000km, under warranty ("Due to component related deviation in clutch as per TPI 2042749/6"). Is it normal for the Golf to have transmission noise? It's similar to the noise from the faulty clutch when it was changing gears. Very faint, but there just about all of the time. Should I badger VW? Car is now out of warranty but I wonder if the problem is related to the clutch and therefore should be fixed as well.

Hi guys have the chance to buy 2007 Volkswagen Golf Comfortline V Manual MY08 with 167 full service history etc, are they cars reliable and will be used 95% highway driving for work

Check out when the next cam belt change is due to be changed. It will attract a $1,000+ expense. Make sure it doesn't have a bad accident history. I think they're generally OK and reasonably reliable for a commuter car but I'd be going Corolla/Civic instead as I think generally they're more reliable, have identical performance and economy and will be easier on the wallet.
I'd go for a Japanese car
My Golf has been very reliable and is at 150K KMS. I did have the cam belt changed not sure on cost, services are reasonable outside of VW garages. The smaller engine golfs are great in a straight line and motorway driving does suits them. The Golf will feel far safer as the build quality is far superior to other cars in its class. Also once you have it I would look for a mechanic familiar with VW who is reasonable.
