Expensive maintenance issues
I bought my VW Golf in 2015 brand new from the dealership with 3 years warranty, thinking it is a brand new car, 3 years warranty should be enough. I got it serviced regularly at their authorized dealership.
I drive the car mainly in the city. Just after my warrant expired, 2 months after, the odometer reading was only around 60,000 km at that time, I had problem with my Gearbox. needed to get replaced. John hughes quoted $3600 to replace the gearbox, I claimed under goodwill warranty, Thank God it was approved. 1 year down the track, a...Read more

VW Golf 90Tsi constant issues.
After the first year I noticed my car stalling, the staff didn’t have a clue what was going on.
They checked it, did a software update and said it was good to go. The car then stalled and died in the car park of VW servicing centre off James Ruse Drive. Shortly after this they replaced my mechatronics unit and the car was ok for another year.
Same issue happened again. New mechatronics unit was ordered. Car was ok to drive for another 2-3 years. Luckily all under warranty.
5th year of owning the vehicle same thing happened again. Replaced t...Read more
he mechatronics this time at my own cost because Volkswagen said the vehicle was out of warranty and that driving a car 25,000 kms a year was ‘excessive’. Mind you we are up to the 4th mechatronics replacement on a vehicle they look after. This time I had to pay for it despite history showing a constant issue with this part being fitted into my car. After a lot of back and forth i ended up paying the $3000 for the mechatronics unit to get the car back on the rd only for the gearbox to fail less than 6 months later (gear fork somehow snapped off) and Volkswagen asked for another $7k to replace. Avoid this car if you can - google all the issues this vehicle had from previous owners: you will also notice a lot of the same vehicle for sale with ‘no drive’.Purchased in August 2021.

Love my golf
I own a 2015 golf. Purchased it brand new from the dealer and have never had a better car. Was my first time downsizing since the kids moved out and very happy to have such a reliable and quality small car. Much easier to get around than the big station wagon I used to own.

2015 tsi. Unacceptable turbo lag and bizarre reverse camera screen
Amazed at the glowing reviews for what it just another small car.
The positives: Golf continues to have great handling, fit and finish generally good and attractive looks. Apple CarPlay is awesome.
The not so positive : controls are not as intuitive as older models (had an early 2000's 2 litre Golf and control layout was obvious and easy to use). It's a personal thing but I can't stand the engine management system and hate that it operates by default. IE if you don't like it you have to turn it off every time you start the car. 2014 VW Golf is pretty good
Ive been happy so far with the 2014 VW golf. Petrol version. Drives powerfully, comfortable, quite cheap to run on long distances. No problems so far, but I am a bit concerned that repairs will be pricey when or if something goes wrong. I think I would go with Toyota or Mazda or Subaru next time.

Feature Packed but Unreliable
Overall this car is a neat little package, packed full of features for the price. The cabin is low, wide and quiet which results in quality ride comfort and superior handling. The Golf boast of solid German build quality yet is lightweight and very fuel efficient. It's still roomy enough to have a comfortable back seat and a very generous boot. The interior is exceptionally stylish and the center console has some very useful features. Unfortunately with all the advanced technology on board, reliability has been a major let down. I have had a nu...Read more
mber of problems with the DSG gearbox, some fixed under warranty but very expensive to repair when they occurred out of warranty. In hindsight, I would have preferred a more basic and reliable ride. The fancy tech still needs the kinks to be straightened out.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

One of the best cars ive driven.
I have a 2015 golf comfort line, manual. What a great car! very smooth on the road, great on fuel and a fantastic interior with all the gadgets you could need. running costs are fairly low with capped price servicing for the first 3 years.Plenty of boot room and space at the rear seats.

Fantastic Car!! (90TSI 6S Manual)
- The engine feels very responsive.
- Haven't had any issues with the motor yet (40,000kms)
- Interior is easily best in class. Especially when comparing against the Focus and Mazda 3.
- Fuel efficiency is fantastic even with a lead foot. Average l/100 is 7.1 for a majority of peak hour stop and start traffic.
- One downside is the need for 95 Unleaded however.
- One major disadvantage of VW's in general is the ridiculous fees that are charged for servicing them at a VW service centre.

From a dream car to a lemon within 4 years
Overall the driving experience has been fantastic with super quick acceleration from a stop at traffice lights. However in the last months of the warranty the DSG gearbox failed and was replaced under warranty but there was still some whining noise coming from the engine bay while driving and recently got worse with severe knocking noise.
The last straw was when a GEARBOX ERROR message appeared on the dash and nearly stalled the car mid driving. Took it back to my local VW dealer who advised that there was a major flaw with the Mechtronics which controlled the gears and mentioned that the whole gear box will need to replaced now. This has soured my taste for VW and will probably go back a reliable Toyota again.

Wonderful Car is most respects, except reliability.
Brought our Golf used at 54k, great car to drive, super comfy, crazy fuel efficient, great amount of power.
However, lots of issues in the 2 or so years we've owned as follows;
Slip between 2nd and 3rd great with DSG, replaced under warranty would have cost me $1700 if not.
Rattle in dump gate, fixed under warranty about a year ago, has returned again, a better part which should fix this issue for good is on backorder
Informational unit - Audio unit packed it in a month back, just been completely replaced under warranty, if I held the eject button in for 10 seconds while in operation it would start back up, this included the reversing camera also. (not sure how much this would have been to fix but not cheap)

Perfect for high mileage highway driving
I love my Golf. I bought a manual due to ongoing concerns with the DSG. I couldn't be happier. Superb fuel economy where I always get more than 900kms per tank. Great refinement and ride comfort. Ive had 36,000 trouble free kilometers in 20 months. The only minor issues were rectified at the last service where the infotainment screen would remain completely off when the car was running. A computer reboot fixed the problem. I love the luxury touches that other cars in this class don't have when comparing base models, namely flock lined door bins...Read more

age about 6.5 litres per 100kms. I do miss having a reversing camera or rear parking sensors. It’s not that the car is hard to park. It’s just that being a city liver now, they’d be useful. At the last service the electric handbrake was fixed under a warranty recall. Not that there seemed to be anything wrong with it. I still love my car for all the reasons mentioned originally. My partner and I are very much looking forward to our upcoming road trip to the Victorian high country this weekend. The Golf will be perfect.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

I wasn't planning on buying a Volkswagen but was open to it, I was actually leaning more towards either Mazda or Toyota but out of those only the Corolla suited our budget and needs but we got abysmal service at the Toyota dealership so went across the road to see the VWs.
We test drove the Polo because it was so much cheaper and it drove so well but the boot was just a touch too small for our stroller so we ended up getting offered an excellent deal on the Golf. We bought from these guys because they treated us like human beings instead of sa...Read more

Engine noise
Bought new in late 2015 . After 18000 kms engine had a squealing noise from the engine on and off which sounded like the AC belt and started to increase. Agent diagnosed as clutch issue to be replaced by a superseded clutch. Clutch replaced.
Did not expect a major repair from a new car such as the Golf with good reviews!

Going, Going, gone....
A quick update. I have sold my 2015 Golf Comfortline at 57890km and 3 years 5 months old.
The battery failed at 2 years 11 months old, it dropped a cell, have never had a battery fail so early. Its a quite expensive battery to replace due to the stop start system costing $399 to replace. It's quite common too I was told. I never use the stop start either always turn it off.
At just over 3 years I noticed that the radiator overflow bottle needed topping up, upon checking it was the water pump weeping fluid. A common problem apparently...Read more
. It's a $1400 fix. The suspension also started to creak and groan over speed bumps and such, prompting my wife to say it was worse than the public transport bus she uses. This is also a common problem, rear shocks were weeping fluid and front bushes were wearing out.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Buy the 6 speed manual
Manual Box the best I have ever driven. I average 44.2 MPG. 80% Suburbs..20% out of Town. The basic Golf ... manual Air Con controls...no Sat Nav..no Reversing Camera.... much less to go wrong ! After market Rev. beepers $ 125 fitted....Garmin Sat Nav $135. Updates free via Net.
No Alloy Wheels to damage on kerbs.
My second Mk V11,, first one a write off, my fault. Replacement from Insurance one year after. Air bags and crumple zones do work 100%!!!
Both driven 8000Ks per year and faultless. Switched Insurance to Shannons, hundreds of Dollars saving from the rest. Green Slips and Comp.

Best hatchback
I bought the Golf Mk 7 as soon as it came onto the market in 2013, so am just coming to the end of my warranty. I ran into reliability issues almost immediately when a clip on the turbo wastegate came loose, twice, necessitating trips back to the dealer. The radio reception was patchy requiring a software update. Then the fuel filler flap wouldn't open, again a trip to the dealer on two occasions because they didn't have the spare part. Now, on its 3rd service, the water pump needed replacement, and the cam belt, both done under warranty bu...Read more
t took two days. I pick it up and immediately feel there's an issue, yep, the turbo waste gate clip has come adrift again causing a power drop in 2nd gear and a hissing noise from the engine, so back to the dealer. In amongst this there have been numerous rattles from under the dash that I have asked to be fixed but never are. I received an offer from VW to extend my warranty by 2 years, but the cost was over $3000, on a car that cost me $27k OTR! I think this is evidence that reliability isn't great. My other car is a Land Rover Discovery which doesn't have a great reputation for reliability, but has been no worse than the Golf, and its extended warranty costs the same, on a vehicle costing 4x as much! Having said that, the VW capped price services are inexpensive so its a good value car for what is very much a premium driving experience. On the plus side, the car drives wonderfully, and is very economical, getting 4.5l/100kms on the highway, from a petrol engine! Despite having only 90kw the engine is very sporty and I have to concentrate to avoid breaking the speed limit around town. The stop start system is superior to any other I've experienced, almost imperceptible. The dashboard feels very premium & works brilliantly with really handy features like a favourites menu for phone numbers. I so want this car to be perfect, and yet my experience hasn't been. Having said that, I would consider another, and am actually looking at a Passat. 1/6/16 - Update - Car returned to dealer to have engine fault fixed, turned out that mechanic had failed to reconnect two important hoses on top of the engine, they were immediately obvious when the bonnet was opened. No apology from the dealer and no offer to collect and/or return vehicle, it was up to me to deliver it to them so they could correct their mistake. They didn't even bother to advise me the car was ready for collection. So, it appears the reliability of the Golf isn't as bad as I had feared, but the dealer (Austral) is seriously letting the side down. 1/9/16 - Update - After letter of complaint to dealer they offered to inspect the centre console rattles free of charge. The problem turned out to be a nail in the ventilation system! God knows how it had gotten there, maybe one of the kids dropped it in but am very happy to say the car is now rattle-free, and dealer is back in the good-books. Car still drives as beautifully as ever after 3 years and 65,000kms. Faith in VW is restored. BTW, test drove a new Passat and whilst feeling very similar to the Golf, it isn't as fun to drive. Perhaps not a having a manual gearbox alters the sporty feeling. 5/6/17 Update - Have just had the 4 year 80,000km service and can report that nothing has gone wrong with the Golf since last year, The tyres finally needed replacement after 80k ($139 ea) and the front brakes ($650 from Kmart, $850 from dealer). The fixed price servicing meant it cost only $330 which is a bargain. Used a different dealer (Westside) who were more conveniently located and the service was impeccable. Car drives beautifully and feels like new. Can't recommend the Golf enough, although after driving the R at a VW track day, I am seriously tempted, its a bargain at $55k but my licence would be toast for sure.Similar opinion? Great Car BUT DSG gearbox and clutch problems persist
Probably My MY14 Comfortline with a Driver Assistance pack was the best car I have ever driven. (I'm 60 yo and driven a lot of cars !! )
There is one HUGE elephant in the VW DSG room though.
It's the DQ 200 DSG dry gearbox and clutch !!!
OK you have all heard there were problems with the MK 6 however they still persist with the MK 7 Auto.
Just have a cruise through the VW forums to check out issues.
My own personal experience ?
New clutch at 8000k. Another new clutch required at 18000k. New gearbox and clutch full replacement at 28000k.
I AM NOT ALONE !!!
The car was out of warranty in 6 months and 32k - I could not, would not keep it out of warranty.
You keep a MK 7 Golf out of warranty at your own peril !!

we love our 2015 comfortline
Great car very solid feel had no problems so far had it the car for 3 months ad done about 4000km and love the economy of it. The idle stop start and hill hold assist take some getting use to. The dsg is silky smooth, I just hope that it is reliable. i am very annoyed that it doesn't not have ipod connectivity especially after my dealer sold me a cord that they said would connect my iphone to the car. my 2012 cruise had ipod connectivity!. But the Bluetooth works perfectly

I have since had the gearbox replaced under warranty..thank god for that otherwise I would've been $10K out of pocket, but I still feel uneasy driving the Golf now since the exchange.
