Making ieatwords.com.au's home builder reviews work for you

ieatwords.com.au hosts independent reviews from thousands of genuine customers who have provided details of their experience with a home builder. Always free and readily accessible, here’s how to make the most of our reviews:

Filtering Reviews

When a customer submits a review for a home builder to ieatwords, we ask them to give specific ratings on eight different aspects of their build to get a more well-rounded perspective on the whole process. These ratings include both intangibles like Site Administration and physical things like Waterproofing.

One of the most useful pieces of information we ask reviewers for is which stage of the build process they are currently up to (Pre-, Mid-, or Post-Construction). Obviously the reviews submitted by those who have completed their build would be the ones you’d want to see the most, since this is where you want to get to yourself!

You can slice and dice the reviews on a builder’s page by clicking the Filter Reviews button, which will pop out a panel on the right side of the screen where you can select the reviews that are most relevant to you.

Pro Tip: Start by filtering down to only reviews by those who selected the Post-Construction option.

You may also wish to see information by reviewers who had a fantastic or terrible experience with one particular aspect of their build.
For example, you could check all reviews by customers who gave one star for Plumbing & Waterproofing to see if there’s an ongoing issue you should be concerned about, or you could see all reviews by people who rated Timeliness 5 stars - maybe the company has a track record of finishing builds earlier than expected.

Pictures and Review Search

Some reviewers choose to upload pictures as part of their review, which can be extremely helpful when assessing the job a home builder has done. You can either browse through a gallery of all the pictures uploaded, or you can select to see only reviews that include pictures or videos using the Filter Reviews button. You can even combine this filter with another from the list such as Post- or Mid-Construction (you can select both at the same time), with a specific overall star rating, or even with a text search. You can see an example of this below, where we have stacked many conditions together to only show the specific types of review we want to see. This is very useful for cutting through the noise, especially since some home builders have hundreds or even thousands of reviews!

Pro Tip: When using the text search, try to use one- or two-word phrases that are likely to be common such as a location or type of job.

Brand Representative Responses

We have a very active community of home builders who engage with their reviewers quite frequently. It can be worth reading through the comments left on reviews by brand representatives to see how they communicate with their customers. No company is perfect, and even some of our top-rated builders do get complaints. Seeing how brands handle these negative instances can give you some insight into what you can expect if something were to go wrong during your own construction process - having a patient and compassionate team on your side can make all the difference.

If you've made it this far, you now know a lot more than the average person about understanding consumer reviews. Don't forget that if you would like more information you can always post a question in our Q&A section at the bottom of each builder's page. You can also message an individual reviewer by hovering over or tapping their profile picture next to their review, but remember to be nice!
