Hello, I was wondering if the possum repeller would annoy small children at all. I have an 18 month old and so want to ensure this would not affect her or any future newborn children. Thanks.

It will depend on the individual. The device emits a very high frequency sound and I find that I can hear it and it does irritate me after a while, however the rest of my family can't hear it. We only have the device come on at once it's dark (when the possums are out) so it isn't an issue.

Happierjack
Happierjack

I understand that most young children are able to hear it. Our grandchildren can and it doesn't drive them away....... unfortunately (smile). I now wear hearing aids and can hear it. Doesn't annoy me either. I guess if the children, or me for that matter stayed in the zone of the noise, it could be troublesome but you do have to take care on targetting the device for it to be effective. Further, you could hook it up to a timing device to only operate after twilight. I when littlies should be in bed and possums go looking for food. Good luck.

Hi Shauna
Both Mathew and Happierjack have shared their own experiences. The Possum Deterrent emits high frequency sound. The average person will hear something if they are close, but they don't hear the high frequency sound that repels possums. However some people who have good high frequency hearing can hear it and don't always like. Like Mathew says it depends on the individual. The younger you are the more likely you'll have good high frequency hearing. Happierjack explains his grand children can hear but aren't that bothered by it. In other cases children don't like it so best to keep it turned off to after they are asleep. The possum deterrent comes with a 90 day money back guarantee.

My problem is possums in my tiled roof.
If I place the possum deterrent outside, facing back at the roof. In constant mode. Do the ultrasonic waves pass through the tiles or do I need to install it into the roof.
Thanks.

The waves don't pass through the tiles, so by having it outside it would actually encourage the possums to move away from the device and probably back to a save haven (ie inside the roof). So to flush them out of the roof you'd need the device inside it

Bird Gard
Darren S.Bird Gard

Hello Chris
Mathew is correct, to repel possums from inside a roof space, the device also needs to be inside the roof space. The question is where do you put the device ?. Most people will target where they think the possums are getting in OR where they hear them the most OR where they think the possums sleep during the day. One device has a max range of 10 metres when used inside a roof space. This means one device cant cover an entire roof space, but one device is often successful

Mate, I don''t think this product will deter anything. In my opinion a waste of money.
There is a product called Dter which I have found works well.
Come back to me if you can't find it.

Hi mj

the possum deterrent has an adjustable dial that allows you to change the frequencies. To repel possums we use low frequencies, but they don't work against cats. To repel cats, rats etc we use the higher frequencies.

I don't believe so. This one didn't annoy our kids dogs at all, but then again it didn't deter possums. Best to ask the seller tho.

Hi Bernadette,
I believe your dogs will not be annoyed by the Possum Deterrent. The frequency used to repel Possums is different to the frequency used to repel dogs.

Just about had enough !!!!
We like most people on this forum have a Possum problem, and the Possums use one side of the house as a highway fortunatly they are not able to get into our roof cavity but I'm sure they have tried....
Are the units waterproof? as I would like to place a unit at the top of our roof in the path of the pesky Possums, They generally come from one direction to cross our roof one unit will paced strategically high and in the path of the animal or will I require two units to stop access from both sides...

My next mission if this does not work will be to coat one side of the roof (possum highway side) with the hottest chilli powder in the world..

Hello Paul
The possum deterrent can be used outdoors in the rain, but the 240 adapter is not weatherproof and does need to be installed undercover. NOTE the optional 10 and 20 metre extension cords we have, they are thin like speaker cable and 9v so you cant electrocute yourself. The extension cords are very handy if you have to install on a roof. How many devices you will need I can only guess with the info available. If the possum always came from one direction then the odds are higher that one device will be sufficient. Possums will use trees, powerlines, sheds etc to get onto a roof, any idea of how your possums get onto your roof ?
Every customers house is different and could have one or more possum entry points to a roof. Sometimes all but sometimes only one entry point will need to be defended. Lets say you have a tree that the possums use to jump onto your roof. You yourself might not know that but you might hear the thump or crash on your roof so you will know that area needs to be defended. The possum deterrent would be best installed in that location and pointing at the tree.
Some people just wont know exactly what the possums are doing so they will do just what you have suggested in your question. It is always worth trying to solve the problem with one device and see how you go, and if one device is enough you wont need a second unit. You can send us a private message with your house address so we can see it on google earth and get possums perspective of your roof top.

Hi David, we also have a dog. As far as we can tell, she doesn’t seem to be bothered by the possum deterrent, but I can only speak for our situation.

Hello David,
Yes. Same situation here: I have a dog and he does not seem affected, neither do the neighbours' dogs. But I know some pet owners complain.
I can also add that, after a year of using two possum deterrents, my possums (ring tails) have become used to the sounds and are no longer deterred. They don't seem to care at all.
Perhaps the solution is not to have the device on all the time (as I do) and only turn it on in Spring / Summer when plants have buds/flowers that attract possums, turning it off during Autumn and Winter.
I certainly intend to try that strategy next year.

Hi David, no dog so we can't really say. But we are not having a lot of luck deterring possums, they are just as prevalent as ever and make a huge mess in our courtyard. It does work on teenagers, though. Our kids can't stand it. Might be useful in shopping centres.

Can I use my possum deterrent on battery power ( 4 size C batteries ) alone as it would be difficult and expensive to connect to a 240v power supply?

Yes you can. Don't know how long the batteries will last though.

Deb
Deb

I think it would be an expensive track to go down running on C size batteries. I was told that when running on these batteries the device goes into power saving mode and doesn’t turn on as often, but don’t know how often you would have to replace them. I believe there is an option where you can connect to a 12V battery.

Are they usually very noisy? the reason I ask is there is a very loud tapping noise coming from the trees at the back of the property I live in..

Hi Gemma

No that doesnt sound like our device at all. For most people the possum deterrent doesnt make much sound at all, some cant hear anythng. But some people with good high frequency hearing can, and thats mostly younger people. I cant hear it myself but im told it sounds like a constant high pitched sound rather than a banging. That description is unanimous amongst the people I have talked with that can hear it, so it sounds like you have something else in your neighbourhood.

So sorry, dont think we can help with that one.

Darren S.Bird Gard

Hi Gail

Yes, to repel possums out of a roof space, having the device inside the roof space is the best place to put the device. A version of the possum deterrent is the ultrasonic Roof Off possum removal device, you will see it on our website http://www.birdgard.com.au/pest-control/Roof-off-possum-removal

We use this device inside a roof space because it has a small flashing strobe light as an additional deterrent.

Is the possum deterrent device safe to use around pets? I have cats which spend some nights outside, will this impact them at all?

2 answers
Rosie
Rosie

May I suggest that you don't let your cats spend nights outside unless you live miles away from your neighbours, and the cats wear bells to warn small native animals that they are around.
The possum deterrent definitely does keep possums away, and it claims to be able to keep cats away too.

Bird Gard
Darren S.Bird Gard

Hi Rose
The possum deterrent has different settings to repel different animals. The consenus among customers is the setting used against possums has little or no effect against dogs and cats. And if you have it on the dog and cat setting it does repel them, but has little or no effect against possums

The Possun Deterrent comes with a 90 day money back guarantee. The device has been successfull against wallabies, but that doesnt mean it will be in every situation.
The CEX is another one of our products, and we consider it to be the best product to repel wallabies. It is always best to give us a call before purchasing any product so we can discuss your circumstances and then advise on what will be the best solution for you.

We have a problem with Brush tailed Possums using our property as an access way to get from their nest at the north side of our garden to a Reserve at the south side of our frontage. They climb across the deck at the back across the roof and onto a power supply cable to cross the road. We would like to place a repellant device at the back as a barrier to stop them going any further. Our Lot is 10 meters wide. We assume we would only switch the device on at night? Would the sound on activation, be disturbing for neighbours and ourselves? Please recommend type and cost.

1 answer
Bird Gard
Darren S.Bird Gard

Hello Bobby
The possum deterrent is the device that most people use in your situation. The cost is $ 224.95 incl GST and delivery, and there are options as to how long the 9v power cord can be. The standard power cord is 2 metres long, but this can be increased by 10 metres for additional $ 10.00 or 20 metres for additional $ 16.50. These power cords are very useful as they give you greater flexibility as to where you can install the device.
see our website about the power cords http://www.birdgard.com.au/pest-control/possum-deterrent
The possum deterrent has a light sensor that automatically turns the device on at dusk and off again at dawn, so no need to manually turn on and off. Normally the device doesnt bother people, but it does make some sound that most people can hear if your close in front of it. If and when the device does disturb people, it is because they have very good high frequency hearing and can hear the ultrasonics that most people dont hear at all. The younger you are the greater the possibility that you might hear the ultrasonics.

Hi,
I have couple of brushtail possums under my weather board house. Unsure of their entry point. They have destroyed our heating ducts. How much range does the possum deterrent cover? Which device would be appropriate to buy ?
Thanks

1 answer
Bird Gard
Darren S.Bird Gard

Hello Sandy

For this type of Possum problem use the Roof Off device http://www.birdgard.com.au/pest-control/Roof-off-possum-removal. The Roof Off is a version of the standard possum deterrent that differs by having an additional strobe light. What you want to protect is just like a roof space so the max range is 10 metres.

If there is a lot of ducting the positioning of the device may be crucial as the ducting can block the ultrasonics and create sound shadows. If the possums are using the ducting as a highway make sure the device is just above the ducting so it has a good spread to achieve max range. Do your best to guess where the possums are getting in and point in that direction as well.

Hello There
Will the Possum Deterrent activate to tree movement caused by wind? Will the Possum Deterrent work if the sound is turned off? How loud is the sonic sound and how loud is the alarm? Thanks Sue

1 answer
Verno
Verno

The Sonic sound is loud enough for the possums to hear and is not adjustable where as the alarm is enough to become a pest and this is adjustable. If this sound is turned off it will still deter the possums. I have them on my deck with the alarm off and works extremely well. I have set them as night time and sonic on constant.
