Disappointing toaster
Smart Toast BTA845I'm disappointed enough by this toaster to go out of my way to write this review. Toaster lasted just over two years. The button to send the toast down stopped working on one side after a year. Then, when the product was two years old, the heating element stopped working on the other side. Out of warranty, no way for it to be economically serviced. I am throwing out a $205 toaster way. It should have lasted much longer given it was being gently used in a family home. Do not recommend you buy this.

Smart Toast BTA845We were very happy with this toaster when we bought it. Loved the ability to toast all different types of bread products and they toasted as they should do. Unfortunately after 2 years it started tripping the safety switch when we used the fruit toast setting. Breville replaced it for us even though it was slightly out of warranty. We then had the same fault less than a year later. Breville again replaced it for us. At this stage we were starting to feel a little cautious about this toaster after having 2 faulty ones. Our third toaster h

Smart Toast BTA845One side element no longer toasts. The broken element half comes on when defrost is selected. Product is just over 2 years old. I mainly toast sliced sour dough and gluten free bread.

Slowest toaster, not worth the money
Smart Toast BTA845Have had this toaster for over 6 months now and still frustrated enough to come back and review.
Most expensive toaster I have ever bought. I was seduced by its looks, but it is much slower to toast than my old toaster (a cheapie from big w), toast somehow is not as hot (I’m guessing this goes along with the elements taking so long to toast) and toasting is uneven on different sides of the bread. All unacceptable really given the price. I shouldn’t have to microwave a fresh piece of toast to keep it warm enough to eat - but all it has is enough

Disappointed.
Smart Toast BTA845I purchased this toaster no 19 September, I am sorry to say I expected it to be better than the old toaster but no it toasts unevenly just as the much cheaper one did. I expected better for $169.00

Smart Toast BTA845The good
The buttons are well laid out and easy to follow. The controls for time (or toasting) are good and it's easy to use.
The bad
For $220 it's hopeless. Of the four slots, none of them toasts evenly. Basically you have to flip your toast mid-cycle if you want it browned all over. We should have taken it back but we ordered it online (from a Dept Store) and lived in the country. We have had $49 toaster perform better than this one.

Disapointed
Smart Toast BTA845Had toaster for 16 months. From the gecko one side would very intermittently stick and would not come up unless I did a power reset. Told to take item to closet repair center which for me was Geelong for warranty but unable to reproduce fault. Toast quality is fair, controls are good.
Today one side would trip the earth leakage so now it is a 2 slice toaster. I expected a lot better quality and longevity for the money I paid for it IMO.

Smart Toast BTA845Despite all the high tech features which are fine ideas this does not live up to expectations. It needs elements that will toast properly with 1 go, not having to set it to maximum and then having to give it another go. I bet they moved the elements further away, made the slots bigger so more heat escapes and never upped the element size to compensate. Very disappointed.

Smart Toast BTA845I'm not sure what Breville are doing.
These products they're "innovating on" are a failure. Sure, pressing a button to lower, or lift the toast is easier than using a spring loaded handle, but if it can't last a year, then maybe the basics need to be revisited.
Plugged it in for the first time on the 29th of July 2016 in a new house, and there was a spark in the toaster on the 22nd of August 2017. Just less than 1 month after the warranty period. The spark took out one half of the toasters ability to toast.

Read more failure normally however my breville stainless steel frying pan now ignores it's temperature setting, and my breville coffee grinder has started making strange loud noises..both within a single month of the warranty period expirin. The term "planned obsolescence" shouldn't just be thrown around, but 3 out of 3 is beyond a joke. Whilst the toaster worked, the cooking was above average with very even toasting, and even allowed the burnt on the outside, soft in the middle setting that no other toaster can get right (2 notches under the highest setting for me). The button settings are a novelty though and due to more moving parts, is more prone to failure compared with a standard toaster. The toast holding brackets stopped working a couple of times (power off at the wall sorted it). It doesn't matter what Breville do in the future, they have proven themselves a poor quality manufacturers and will never be seen in my home again. Not only that, if the opportunity arises, I will vigorously recommend against any Breville product.Find out how Breville Smart Toast BTA845 compares to other Toasters

Was Good toaster for 2 & 3/4 years - then 1 side stopped heating - Breville won't sell parts to fix.
Smart Toast BTA845Update 16/12/2019 :
So on the weekend, 1 side stopped heating after 2 & 3/4 years (approximately 400 use cycles given we use it about 2 to 3 times per week on weekends). Everything else works perfectly - tray goes up and down, timer and LEDs all fully functional. In fact, the first sign the thing had stopped working was when 2 slices of frozen bread popped up on one side and 2 slices of toast on the other.
These things happen, heating elements can wear out over time. And yes it is the closer side, so the side that gets more wear.

Smart Toast BTA845Had this toaster for 1 week and have taken it back. To start with it was burning 1 side and and not toasting the other (and no the crumpet mode was not engaged) but after turning crumpet mode on and off a couple of times it did rectify. My issue was I had the setting on the same number every day but it was so inconsistent, 1 day it would cook perfectly the next day was not cooked at all, the next it would be over done. It was always different, and when you have a family of 4 that all eat toast for breakfast it was incredibly annoying. When it

Smart Toast BTA845You would think that for $180 you could get a toaster that actually cooks toast evenly? Sorry, not even close. We even swapped it for a new one to see if we had bought a lemon but they were both the same. The Breville toaster cooks as unevenly as a $25 toaster (or worse) and not only that, the 4 slots cook differently to each other. So our dream of having 4 perfect slices of toast pop up at the same time was just an aberration! Don't waste your money on this not-so-smart toaster.

Expensive - Would Be Worth It If It Worked
Smart Toast BTA845Purchased this toaster in the hope that expensive meant it would work. Well it half works. Only toast in one side. It's the silly season and I cannot get to the shops to exchange or refund. Not impressed at all. Why do toaster only toast one side. Agh. Just want a working toaster.
Hi Bushbaby, this toaster comes with a crumpet setting, which applies more heat on one side and less on the other. Could you check that this function isn't engaged?
Thanks, The Breville Team

Hi The Breville Team
The crumpet function is most definitely not engaged. Since the first slice of toast it has not toasted on the one side, no matter which slot I put the slices in.
Thanks

Smart Toast BTA845Toaster is great but the button descriptions have rubbed off from fingers rubbing on them over time. so the explanation for each button is now written on the wall which looks ridiculous. Very disappointing. I'm not sure how you get the button writing replaced so there is nothing i can do as everything else is still working

Smart Toast BTA845I bought this yesterday after my Sunbeam Cafe series 4 blew up which I had for a couple of years it was great, foul play by a teenager is why it became broken . Breville smart toaster useless slow to cook doesn't keep toast warm so if you hit a little more browns it but toast is cold, why did I buy to save $20 I made a huge mistake .
