So disappointed
Cabothane Clear Water BasedUpon opening the can, was unsure of what my raw new coffee table would look like after painting it with this white gluggy glue like stuff! Followed the directions & stirred & stirred, applied it to my furniture & was still very wary, it was stringy, kept stirring & applying hoping that once it dried it might improve, but after 2 coats it is rough like sandpaper, I am so disappointed & will not buy this again. Purchased from Bunnings 1st April 2017 (feel like an April fool!) date on bottom of can 06/08/16 Cabothane Clear water based.

Cabothane Clear Water BasedI purchased satin finish water based cabothane clear from Bunnings on 10/3/2017.
The consistency is like partially set jelly. Strings come off the bottom of the brush when removing from the tin. Needless to say the finish is very disappointing. Will need to find an alternative brand, sand back and start over. Wish I had read reviews first
Date on tin is 12/10/2016.

Cabothane Clear Water BasedFollowed directions, but was suspicious of white glue like consistency. Used it anyway and the result was very disappointing. I will have to go and get a proper gloss varnish to get the shiney, glossy finish I want. Should have followed my instincts. Should have read the reviews before purchasing

Hi There,
Thank you for your review. A glue like consistency for Cabot's Cabothane Water Based is not normal. Once stirred properly, the product should flow nicely.

Cabothane Clear Water BasedNeeds to be properly mixed before use. Very important! Goes on smoothly and dries quickly between coats.
Applied with a sponge applicator.over an acrylic painted tabletop surface Using a brush left too many marks.
I put on a total of eight lightly applied coats, allowing at least 2 hours between 1st and 2nd coats, then waited 24 hours before applying coats 3 and 4. Another 36 hours before 5 and 6, then a week before 7 and 8. It's not a glass-like finish, but I wasn't going for that anyway. Colours shine through nicely and I'm very happy with the result.

Awful product
Cabothane Clear Water BasedI wanted a water based varnish to apply to a new wooden balustrade. The product had congealed in the bottom of the can and I spent a long time stirring to achieve a consistency that was not akin to gluggy glue. After the first coat, the finish was very rough so I sanded until it was completely smooth. However, after the second coat the rough finish has returned. I am very unhappy with this product and now have a handrail which feels terribly coarse and rough when held. I would never buy this product again.

Thanks for your review and we’re sorry to read you’ve had a poor experience with Cabothane.
Sometimes if Cabothane has being on the shelf for a long time it can settle in the bottom of the can.
Befuddled.
Cabothane Clear Water BasedI have used both the oil and water based forms of Cabothane Clear on furniture and trim for a number of years, but the last project I have had major issues with the water based variety which I simply can't explain. My best theory is that there's been a tweak in the formula, perhaps to make it easier to spray (I'm using brushes, but apparently I'm behind the times as every man and his dog is hopping on the spray gun train). It seems thinner than previous tins yet it's drying as quickly as always. This has left a very uneven finish on both solid

I find I'm having to knock each coat down with fine grit paper to a greater extent than previously (in fact, in the past I have been able to recoat without sanding at times). I literally have identical pieces to compare the experience as I'm doing two of a set of dining chairs - the first four I completed a year ago without issue. Nothing has changed in my stripping/sanding/cleaning routine and I'm using the same type of stirrers and brushes. I'm in Canberra, so clearly ambient heat isn't an issue at time of year and the frosts are now behind us. Would like to give a wholly positive review as I've done numerous pieces with the water based - and I have pine, oak and ash pieces finished with it that look as good as they did when first finished. I have always found it the best for keeping timber tones as light as possible, but not this time sadly.Hi Emily,

... Read more We're glad you've had some positive experiences with Cabothane, and we're sorry to hear you unhappy with your latest purchase. Just so you know, the formula for Cabothane was last altered in 2014, with no change to its viscosity resulting from this formulation tweak. We're unsure what could have caused the product to thin in the can, and we'll need to follow up to inspect the batch for you. The thinner nature of the product you've described would explain the bad finish and fast drying time. Could you please call us on 1800 011 006 and quote reference number 4445190. We'll follow up on the batch number, and see if we can help get your project back on track. Cabot'sThanks for getting in touch, Cabot's. I will get the batch no. info and get back to you. Liked the gloss finish but tin reacted with product and went brown towards end of tin
Cabothane Clear Water BasedIt seems all the people complaining of items being ruined were too impatient to test patch first! I bought this in 500ml as it was the only brand of clear water based varnish I could find at local stores and I wanted to put over acrylic paintings I had done on wooden board for uni. (Not sure if I can use oil based version over acrylic in future since people seem to have more luck with oil based?). After opening tin the mixture was very gluggy like it had separated and there were clumps of film all throughout can, I followed instructions and mix

I thought maybe it was off, the date on bottom of tin was 14/07/2015 so I was hoping that was the batch date and not expiry date, I was going to take it back to the store and ask but thought since the tin was open I'd do a test patch and see how it went. I poured it out of the tin as I needed it (covering tin in between) and mixed in smaller batches with brush before applying and although their were still small lumps when I started applying they seemed to smooth out after a few strokes. I found if I did quite a thick coat it gave me time to smooth it out before it dried as it dried very quickly. I noticed that any varnish around the top of the tin dried a dark brown and this worried me as the product said non-yellowing, it dried clear on my paintings but it has only been a few months so too early to tell if it will yellow in time. After figuring out how to apply it I was happy with the glossy finish, you can see the brushstrokes a bit but because I brushed with the grain it looks like it's just the wood showing through. As I got to the bottom of the tin however, the tin and mixture was brown as if it had reacted with the gold tin the same way it dried brown on the top of the can, luckily I didn't have much to go and it was a dark painting so I used it anyway and it left hints of a pinkish brown in lighter areas. I came searching for reviews as I need more varnish but can't see anyone else mentioning this problem and I don't know if you have heard of this happening before but I am not confident to buy this product again for this reason even though it gave a decent finish if you know how to apply it right. Cabothane Clear Water BasedI found this product extremely difficult to apply and to achieve a good finish. I thought maybe the garage was too cold so tried again in a warm room, no different. It appears to have small bits in it that can be seen and felt when the surface is dry. After many coats on flat surfaces I achieved the best coverage by applying very thickly, (this obviously couldn't be done on the sides!) product went white but did dry clear with an average finish and one that did not reflect the amount of time I had put into sanding back the furniture. Very easy to clean up afterwards but I would not recommend this product and wish I had read these reviews BEFORE purchasing

So much time spent painting a wardrobe with beautiful chalk paint, distressed it and have it ruined by this product!! Dries too quickly and I'm devastated about the colour change. Cabothane Clear Water BasedI bought this product without researching it. After reading the review I almost took it back to exchange it for the oil based version, but I had already stained with a water based stain so I thought I would give it a go. Glad I did. Cabothane Clear Water BasedI have just tried to sue the Cabots Cobathene water based satin finish. I have a good deal of home painting experience and the product was a disaster to work with. It was gluggy like trying to apply flag glue and dried almost instantly making it impossible to get a smooth finish. I sanded it back and used their oil based satin finish and it was a breeze to use. I will never use the water based product again-same as the other reviews. Go for the oil based even though cleanup might be more of a pain.

Cabothane Clear Water BasedI'm applying water-based Cabothane over timber that has been stained and sealed with Danish Oil, and I'm very pleased with the results. The timber retains the deep silky lustre brought out by the Danish Oil, which I've not been able to achieve previously with standard polyurethane, which leaves a slightly dulled, yellow-tinted finish.
I've read the other reviews on this page and can only conclude that the negative criticisms are a result of expecting a water-based product to behave like oil-based polyurethane. Where others have criticised ho
... Read morew quickly this stuff dries, this feature is a definite plus for my appllications. My work requires an entirely dust free environment if I use oil-based polyurethane, as each coat must be allowed to dry for up to 30 mins before the next coat, by which time so much airborne dust has settled on the coating that I have to carefully pick off or sand sections and do continuous patch-ups. And oil-based polyurethanes don't seem to sand back very well unless left to dry for a few days. Very inconvenient. This water-based version dries within a few minutes, and very little dust touches the surface in time to get stuck. It is also very clear, whereas oil based versions have a noticeable yellow tinge and give the timber a dull appearance. Sanding back is very easy, if required. Where slower drying times are preferable, a simple solution is to add water. This will require additional coats, but the thinner consistency allows for very subtle streak-free patch ups. This product solves a lot of issues caused by oil-based versions.Trick is in the application
Cabothane Clear Water BasedI used cabothane clear water based after two coats of cabots water based stain and varnish. At first I had terrible results with this product. I am in Darwin and applying it in 30+ degree heat and extreme humidity, needless to say it was drying very very quickly.
First coat was very streaky, cloudy white coverage and lots of brush marks. I enquired at Bunnings paint dept about how to use it and after some good advice came back with quite good results:

Sanded back the top a second time as I am a bit of a perfectionist and repeated the whole process again but the same result. I made sure the finish was well mixed and applied on a day that was in the 20's just in case this was a contributing factor. Will definitely not use this again.
