Red hardwood sanded down to 240 grit. The white water based (satin) varnish in the can is leaving a milky surface on the wood instead of clear. I tried the hair dryer trick with no success. Any thoughts?
Hello, I want to creat a black Japan look on my Baltic pine floors and use Cabot’s water based crystal clear as a coating. Can you recommend how we do this? Paint/stain the floors first perhaps, or add a stain to the crystal clear? Many thanks, Sacha

Read more In order to achieve the look you are after, there are a few recommendations we can give. Firstly you will need the floor to be completely bare of any coating. This is necessary for the stain to penetrate the timber. Once the floor is bare, be sure to vacuum sanding residue. You can then apply 2 coats of Cabot’s water-based Stain and Varnish in Black. Once dry, you can then apply 3 coats of Cabot’s water-based CFP in the sheen level of choice. This clear coat is necessary as it is the only clear coat that can withstand foot traffic, unlike Cabothane Clear or Crystal Clear as you mentioned. Be sure to apply a small sample to a hidden area to be sure you are happy with the colour before committing to the whole expanse. Read more When working with polyurethanes, the solid content is not the same as paint and therefore has to be stirred continuously in order to avoid the flattening agents separating and settling to the bottom of the can. In order to resolve the white effect you currently have, we recommend waiting until the Cabothane is dry, then sanding it back to bare timber. You can then give it a fresh coat with well-stirred polyurethane. If you have any questions about this or any other future Cabot's projects, please feel free to give us a call on 1800 011 006. how to strip back without sanding

Read more use but pretty bloody slow and you almost always have to do another coat. I use the first but wear rubber kitchen gloves and safety goggles. At this time of year they both work faster so you can’t just put it on and walk away - it goes hard again if it dries. Just give it the occasional scrape every 10 minutes to see if it is soft enough. I use stainless steel putty knives / scrapers to get the old paint off. 2. Heat gun - doesn’t have to be expensive - mine is a Black and Decker but it is 2000Watts which is useful if you are using it outside where a lot of the heat gets blown away. Same stainless scrapers. I wear a leather garden glove on my scraper hand as things get pretty hot when you are moving heat gun and scraper at the same time in different directions.Hello Quee,

Theoretically yes once the stain is completely dry (7 days even at this time of year). Problem is it’s not as durable as an oil based poly or as easy to apply as one of the non-polyurethane clear fini...
Read moreshes. I’d choose something else. And I’ll repeat my answer to other questions - dust control is the thing that will make your table look good. Buy some tack cloths if you can find them to wipe the table down just beforehand, don’t apply finish just after you have vacuumed the room as it will still be full of dust, do it in clean clothes (not sanding clothes), and when you finish take your gear out of the room to clean up and close the door. A matt finish hides dust better than satin which is better than gloss. Use a big brush so the product goes on quickly and you aren’t over-working the product or trying to keep a giant wet edge going. No I’m not nuts - dust is the enemy here. JeffHello there Debh,

Can I use this over Scandinavian oil?
Nope - won’t stick. You either stay with an oil finish forever or strip the whole project back and even then you’ll probably have to wipe it all down with solvent to remove all traces of the oil. If y...
Read moreou want something with a bit more protection, the only option is to buy one of the oil products that goes a bit harder and allows you to ‘polish’ it with fine steel wool. As there is no industry formula for what goes into ‘Danish’ oil or ‘Scandinavian’ oil you will need to read the can to find something suitable. There are products sold as ‘benchtop’ oils which may work. Can’t remember - read the back of the can. You’re mixing 2 random collections of ingredients here so there is a chance they won’t blend. If you can wipe off some of the old Scandinavian oil with a mild solvent like isopropyl alcohol you stand a better chance. JeffHello Greg B

Hi there,
Im looking to use the Carbothane Clear to protect a water based painted kitchen benchtop. Will it it be ok providing i sand the painted surface first?
Almost essential you do to get them to bond as benchtops get such a hard time. But not with sandpaper - use 0000 grade steel wool (Bunnings sells it) or one of the 3M synthetic sanding mats that is al...
Read moreso labelled as equivalent to that grade of steel wool. You are just buffing it to take the shine off and nothing more. Both are much better than even fine sandpaper as they don’t get clogged. Make sure it is hard before you do this - 7 days minimum between paint and poly. Use the biggest brush you feel you can handle - you need to get the product on quickly and evenly without overworking it. Try to buy a brush that is average quality or better with soft ‘flogged’ tips to the bristles. They used to be expensive but if you choose one with a plain wood handle they are good value these days. You’ll still need to be careful with the bench top. Water based Polyurethane still isn’t as good as old Formica.Hello there Chris,

I need to use a roller as im no good doing this with a paint brush, and the doors, cupboards i have to do are too large, what is best for a good finish foam or a nap roller?

Read morewater based enamels, they are shorter. And buy a smallish roller or mini roller - easier to handle and less wasteful. Even a small roller is fast enough for a door. (I’ve never been impressed by foam brushes. Paint pads - had great results with water based acrylics and you can get small ones. Worth considering if the roller doesn’t work). With cupboard doors - do edges and faces separately - it gives you more time to get a good finish and you’re not trying to keep 3 wet edges going at the same time. Does the date on the base of the can indicate when the can was made or does it indicate when the product went into the can. My concern was regarding shelf life.
