i have painted terracotta pots with an acrylic design and painting over the top (so they can be put in the garden), with cabot's gloss or mat clear exterior but the varnish goes grainy and sometimes cloudy. I do not paint when it's humid.

Used a couple of coats of gloss on wood, changed my mind can I cover it with the same in satin
Good morning,
There should be no issue in you changing the sheen level.
It may be a good idea to give the area a light sand first using 240 grit sandpaper.

Hi guys. Just wondering if water based clear is suitable for indoor tables on a yatch or would oil based be better? Don't want yellowing and that is why I'm thinking water based.
Thanks
Carl
Hi Carl,
You are able to use the water based Cabothane on indoor tables - which does have a non-yellowing formula.
The Oil based Cabothane, while slightly more harder wearing will yellow over time.
However, due to the conditions that the coating may be subject to, we recommend monitoring the surface of the coating and re-coating when you begin to notice wear, or when the surface no longer repels water.

Hi I have been renovating a mohogany hall table using CABOT"S SATIN CABOTHANE water based spray can. The first coat went on just fine. With the second coat which i applied the following day it came up with flaking and what appeared to be scratch marks. I thought maybe i had done something wrong so i took off the 2 coats and gave it a good sanding. Reapplied the first coat and all good. the second coat did exactly the same as the first try. What is going on???
Good morning!
There could be a few reasons why the Cabothane is not adhering well to the timber. More than likely there is some sort on containment on or within the timber that the Cabothane cannot adhere to.
Give us a call on 1800 011 006, we will need to ask you a few questions to get down to the bottom as to what is causing this, and hopefully offer you a solution or recommend a more suitable coating.

Hi Cabot’s. Would this product be okay to use as a sealer on a freshly painted white dining table?
Hi there Clinton,
If the paint used was an acrylic paint, you should have no problems using the water based Cabothane.
However, let the existing paint cure for at least 7 days prior to the application of the Cabothane.
It is very important to test a small area and let dry for 24 hours to ensure the Cabothane will adhere well before coating the whole table.

Can I use waterbase cabothane clear on a whitewash butcher block kitchen bench?
Hi there Ros,
If the white wash on the timber is a water based coating, you shouldn't have an issue using the Waterbased Cabothane. However - we always recommend a small test area to ensure the coating will adhere well.
If an Oil based White wash has been used - you can take a look at the Oil based Cabothane, but again, ensure you do that small test area.
If you are planning on using the Butcher Block to prepare food on - we do not recommend using a polyurethane coating on it. As a sharp knife can damage the coating, which will result in moisture and bacteria being able to penetrate the timber.
If you would like to give us a call on 1800 011 006 we can discuss a more suited coating for you.

Ive alot of varnish to apply i use cabothane clear water based MATT
is it all possible i use a roller not foam but microfibre or similar instead of brush
cheers Kate
Hi Kate,
For the application of the Cabothane we do recommend applying it with either a good quality brush or an air sprayer.
The reason we do not recommend the use of a roller, is because it can introduce bubbles in the coating which can result in an uneven finish, or compromise the durability of the coating.

Is cabothane clear water based food safe?
Hi Johnny,
The Cabothane Clear does not carry the Food Safe Logo.
The only Food Safe coating we have is the water based Benchtop Clear - which is similar to the Cabothane, both being water based with a non yellowing formula and a polyurethane.
With respect to our logo, "Food Safe" means that if food was left on the coating, the coating would be unlikely to leach anything that is hazardous to health.
However, we do recommend waiting a minimum of 28 days (4 weeks) prior to direct contact with food to ensure the coating has completely cured.

I have been using this as a top coat varnish on decoupaged terracotta pots. The paper design is sealed prior to varnishing. To date have been successful where my pots are out in the weather but will this remain the case or will the design fade over time? I am hoping to start selling the pots but would like to be confident that the pots will look as good as they do 12 months+ on. Thinking I should say that they arent recommended for outdoor use but if your varnish is for exterior then maybe I have found the best product! Hope so!!
Hi Leigh,
The Cabothane does contain UV blockers and can be used for exterior use. But due to the Cabothane being a clear coating, the weather and UV will eventually break down the coating and will need to be re-coated and for this reason we suggest not letting the coating be fully exposed to UV exposure. As the coating breaks down - you may find that the design could begin to fade.
For your particular project though, I do suggest giving our Help and Advice Team so we can ask a few questions and help find another suitable product.

Thank you.
I opened the can and is whitish in colour. Is this normal ?
Yes it’s normal !
You have to stir really well and keep stirring as you paint it on.You can’t let it sit for too long.
Hi Pierre,
Yes, this is normal for water based coatings to look white or 'milky'.
As the coating begins to dry, the milky appearance will soon disappear, and it will go clear.

Can you use as top coat over a oil base stain paint

Can Cabots clear polyurethane water based be used on top of Cabots oil based interior stain?
Hi is this product suitable for bricks surrounding a wood heater and how many coats would i need
I just refinished an older wood tv cabinet. How long do I have to wait before Fully curing so I can safely set the tv on it?
Can i use a roller to apply the product?
Hi,
I actually tried that but I found it applied better using a brush - the roller actually introduced bubbles into the surface of the coating when I tried it. The main thing was to apply the varnish as quickly as possible with the brush so you don't get brush marks. Maybe wait until the weather is cooler too maximise the time you have to apply it as well.
Can Cabothane water base be used om a floor application?
I want to seal the paper seat of a wishbone chair. Can you recommend a product that will not darken the seat and be a Matt finish?
Thank you
Carmel
Haymes (or other brands) waterbased polyurethane. It will not yellow as it's not an oil, and it won't alter the colour of the bottom coat.
