Hi I have recently stained my deck with Cabots deck and exterior stain, Now when it gets damp it is dangerously slippery. is there anything I can do to fix this issue

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hello there Rob,
Thank you for reaching out via Cabot's Product Review.
Sorry to know of the slippery Deck & Exterior Stain coated finish, you have there.

It certainly can happen, when a protective exterior timber deck protective coating gets film damp from dew or saturated with rain at times, as some decking boards can be slightly cupped and hence, will pool with water which will increase the potential slip factor, to some extent.

As an option -
You can add our sister brand Intergrain UltraGrip to the Deck & Exterior Stain water-based, via a clean paint tub as per label instructions.
Once mixed through the Deck & Exterior Stain thoroughly, you can apply one or two coats over your clean and dry stained surface finish.
Please be sure, to first wash and gently scrub down the current stained surface using Cabot's Deck Clean as per label instructions.

Also, please note - It's best to always apply a small sample coat by two coats over a clean dry hidden section, or offcut of timber in order to make sure you're happy with the dry test coated result, before committing to the expanse.

Hi there, wondering if this would be okay to use on a cedar spa? I think it has previously been stained. The wooden panels are ridged so it's pretty difficult to sand them back (if not impossible). Thanks

Cabot's ·

Hello EMB1,

Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your enquiry.

This is a little tricky to assess over this platform. Spa exteriors can be coated with our Deck and Exterior Stain Water Based, but if your previous coat has worn so severely, you would ideally need to sand it back. If this is not possible you can clean it with our Cabot's Deck Clean, and coat over it, but note that the uneven wear will show through the semi-transparent finish. If you are okay with this then you can proceed.

Hello. I coated my new merbau deck with Cabots decking oil yesterday. I applied two coats after cleaning it with the Cabots cleaning product. I was 35 degrees yesterday however this morning is still very sticky to touch and leaves footprints when stepped on. Does this mean i applied too much oil? Is it now just a matter of using the cleaning product again to remove the excess oil?

It is unclear from your description but appears you applied 2 coats in a very hot day. After the first coat it should be well absorbed and able to walk on and then apply a second coat after
Perhaps wait longer for it to dry out

Hello Timmomatic,

Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your inquiry.

This is quite a common issue when coating decks during extremely warm temperatures. Our dry times are quoted for ideal temperatures which, for this product, are 25C and 50% humidity. When working in Cooler, hotter or humid conditions it may require longer to dry.

Hello Brody F,

Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your inquiry.

It is a little tricky to assess over this platform, as there are a couple of reasons this could be happening. Firstly it is important that the weather is within ideal conditions (25 degrees and 50% humidity) when applying as this can extend drying time when not adhered to. It is also important that the deck is cleaned correctly before a fresh coating is applied.

If your deck is still sticky at this stage, I recommend cleaning it with Cabot's Deck Clean to remove the tackiness. Once clean and dry, you can apply one more light coat of Deck and Exterior Stain, as long as the weather is within ideal conditions.

I have a deck needing painting with Cabot’s water based decking paint, previous paint is oil based. Can I apply cabot water based decking paint straight over the old oil based? Thanks

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hello there Lachlan G,
Thank you for reaching out via Product Review.

You can apply the durable Cabot’s Deck & Exterior Timbercolour water-based paint over the previous, oil based painted deck finish.
As long as the oil based paint is in good clean, dry condition with no cracking, peeling, or flaking, you can give the surface a thorough wash/scrub down using Cabot’s Deck Clean as per label instructions.
Then once clean and dry, we recommend applying an adhesion test coat to a small clean dry section, with one coat iof the well-stirred Timbercolour paint.
Allow drying for 6 hours then firmly rub a strip of sticky tape over the coated section and rip off quickly. If the test coating is removed do not proceed as the surface is not ready, and needs to be sanded back with a 120 grit sanding pad to a smooth, dulled down finish.
Then apply the Cabot’s Deck Clean wash down process as outlined again and repeat the adhesion test coat.
Once happy with the adhesion test result – You are good to go with the water based Timbercolour
paint application in colour of choice,by two – three coats.

Hello Ross,

Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your inquiry.

We do not recommend mixing brands when using woodcare coatings, even if they are both water-based stains as different products have different qualities such as durability, penetration, and colour variance. If you do choose to mix two brands together we cannot guarantee the result.

Hi Judy F,

Thank you for reaching out to us at Cabot’s via Product Review with your query.

It is a little tricky to assess over a digital platform like this. When working with uncovered areas it is important to keep on top of maintenance. If you are having a mould issue, we recommend looking into our sister brand Intergrain’s Ultraprep Mould Killer. This will not only remove the visible mould on the surface but kills the spores growing in the timber. It is important to read the instructions carefully when using this product.

Please note that pooling may be a structural issue which can be due to the structural support posts.

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hello Norm,

Thank you for reaching out to us at Cabot’s via Product Review with your query.

It is a little tricky to assist this site unseen, but you should be able to coat over the stain with our Deck and Exterior Paint if you prep the surface correctly. The posts will need to be washed with Cabot’s Deck Clean to remove water resistance and once this is done you should conduct a water bead test to confirm it has worked.

Sprinkle droplets of water on to the timber’s surface. If the water beads on the surface of the timber, the timber is not quite ready for a new coating and further weathering or sanding/stripping is required. If the water droplets readily soak in to the surface of the timber in under 15 seconds, this is an indication that the timber is a ready for a new coating.

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hello there Andrew Randell F,
Thank you for reaching out to Cabot's Australia via Product Review.

It's a little tricky to assess with accuracy as to the specifics of your timber project around the pool area there, via this review platform.
The title of your post suggests you are using the Cabot's Deck & Exterior Stain water based, while referring to Cabot's Aquadeck in your detail as being the product used over your pool decking.
Either way, both are excellent protective products by two-three coats over a well-prepared bare timber surface.
I would suggest if it is the Cabot's Aquadeck by three coats you have used, you might need to give it a wash/scrub down with the Cabot's Deck Clean as per label instructions, and then once rinsed clean and dry -
Apply one final well-stirred coat of the Aquadeck over the expanse and leave to dry.
It can be due to the specific timber porosity and surface preparation you are not seeing the beading on the surface when wet.
That can cause the coating to be absorbed a touch deeper into the grain and hence needs that extra coat to have the durable Aquadeck surface barrier, doing its job nicely as it sets dry over the timber surface.

If you need any further advice on this or any up-coming woodcare projects, please give our Help & Advice team a call on 1800 011 006.

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hello there Hopeful,
Thank you for reaching out to Cabot’s Australia via Product Review.

There are a number of potential reasons for a fresh deck coating being sticky after the quoted drying times on the label.
The preparation wash down, the porosity of the bare timber or coated surface can significantly affect drying times along with the humidity, surface, and air temperature at the time of application.
Another is how heavy the coating was applied and if there’s any subtle decking board cupping or deck sagging over the expanse, then you will get subtle pooling and hence longer drying times.

The good news is – Your coating will certainly dry but may take longer than the specified drying times on the label.
You can rectify the issue by washing down the sticky surface and applying the Cabot’s Deck Clean dilution as per label instructions, then once rinsed clean and dry, apply your final Deck & Exterior Stain coat.

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hello there Col,
Thank you for reaching out to Cabot's Australia via Product Review.

The Cabot's Deck & Exterior Stain is not recommended for thinning for spray application.
It certainly can be thinned down of course but not ideal as it does contain a specific pigment/binder formulation in order to achieve a durable uncompromised stain finish.
Thinning a timber stain down for spray application will often not penetrate the dry exterior bare timber surface, and hence will tend to run if too thin.
If you were determined to spray the Deck & Exterior Stain,I would suggest not thinning it down and using an appropriate HVLP or airless system (1.3 tip) but being sure to spray and then back brush immediately into the timber grain.

Hi, can I put deck oil over Cabot's exterior deck paint?

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hi Aaaaa,
Thank you for reaching out to us at Cabot’s via Product Review. We do not recommend doing this as our decking oil is a product that is designed to penetrate deep into the timber and protect it from the inside. Our Timbercolour Deck and Exterior Paint, on the other hand, is designed to sit on the surface and form a protective barrier to stop water or in this case the decking oil itself from seeping into the timber. Therefore, these two products are not compatible.

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hello there Kristin C,
Thank you for contacting Cabot's via Product Review.

Sorry to know of the highly unusual coating difficulty you've experienced in applying the usually, smooth and even coating process/finish of the Cabot's Deck & Exterior Stain water based, in Beach House Grey.
It's of course a little tricky to assess with accuracy from this platform, but the only thing that might cause such a sticky feeling while being applied over a well prepared timber surface is that the Cabot's New Timber Prep followed by the Cabot's Deck Clean surfactants, were possibly still present within the timber grain.
Another possibility is that the Deck & Exterior Stain may not have been stirred through the can enough, which can cause some binder separation and resulting stickiness.

You can certainly choose to paint over the current stain finish using the Cabot's Timbercolour Deck & Exterior Paint by two - three coats in colour of choice, but you will need to wash/scrub down the current stain finish in order to reduce it's water resistance.
Once rinsed thoroughly clean and dry - You need to apply the water bead test over the dry stained surface by sprinkling some clean water over a few dried boards and watching to see if the water beads or gets absorbed.
If the water gets absorbed, you can go ahead and start applying the paint coatings after the water has been removed.
If the water beads, you'll need to give the surface another wash/scrub down again with the Deck Clean as per label instructions, and repeat the water bead test to assess the surface again.

If you have any further questions for this or any other future Cabot's projects, please feel free to give us a call on 1800 011 006.

Hi Cabot’s team,
I sanded back and applied 2 coats of Cabot’s Merbau Water Based Deck and Exterior Stain to my verandah decking about 3 months ago. Very pleased with the finish! However, now that we are getting quite a bit of rain, the stain is running down the Verandah white wooden uprights. I wipe off the stain after the rain, but same thing happens each time it rains. Any idea why that would be?

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hi there David B,
Thank you for reaching out to us at Cabot’s via Product Review.

Really great to know of the happy Deck & Exterior Stain finish you've achieved there over your deck expanse.
As for the running of the stain - It’s certainly very unusual to have dry water or oil based protective timber coating reconstitute and run like that during wet weather, as once durable water or oil based protective coating has dried thoroughly, it is highly water resistant and cannot be reconstituted.
I would suggest it could possibly be a bit of timber tannin bleed more so.
Timber tannin bleed is not unusual with very high tannin content timbers, even after coating with a protective stain if the tannin wasn't removed.
Particularly if the bare timber deck wasn’t washed/scrubbed down enough via the Cabot’s
New Timber Prep which is designed to remove the natural tannins and oils out of bare timber.
This would then be followed directly via the Cabot’s Deck Clean as per label instructions in order to finalize the exterior timber surface preparation before stain coat application.

However, if you would like to discuss this further to help rectify the issue, please do give us a call on 1800 011 006 and quote your ticket number 463010 to the Technical Consultant, who will be happy to assist you with this.

We are about to finish 2 decks (treated pine and the other Merbau). Two Questions:
(1) In front of Cabot's "Win $10,000" sign, Bunnings Seven Hills has a piece of timber painted in sections with Aquadeck Natural, Aquadeck Merbau and Deck & Exterior Stain Merbau. As one of the reviewers commented, the stain looks like "Mission Brown". Please explain.
(2) Question to Cabot's Rep = do you have photos of treated pine & Merbau decking with 2-coats of Deck & Exterior Stain Merbau?

Melbourne
Melbourne  ·

Bunnings have sample strips to show what finished colours look like which is great. But the problem is, despite getting a sample pot (at the exorbitant price of $15 for 250ml) the end result when you do the whole deck is different. See my review. I had very patchy results despite it being applied consistently to the treated pine decking. The rep said it is due to different absorption rates etc etc but I can’t see how the single decking board which comes out of the same tree can be so patchy without any rhyme or reason.

My friend who’s a bit more experienced with decks has given up on the Cabot’s range is opting for the more expensive but reliable Sikken (I think that’s what it’s called) brand. He said to be sure to use the base coat product first and you’ll get a good result.

Good luck

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hello there Lockie,
Thank you for reaching out. When it comes to Cabot's Aquadeck VS Deck & Exterior Stain - Merbau colour, both are applied over bare Pine and both will look different at store level. The Aquadeck is more of a semi-transparent oil by comparison to the much higher pigment opacity of the Deck & Exterior Stain which will achieve two different Merbau coloured results. The Aquadeck in Natural colour is much lighter and more toward a mid-depth honey if you will.
Also please note that colour, in general, is very much subject to the individual and hence some people may view a red as more of a brown/burgundy and vice versa.

Hi Kerrmick,

Since it seems that your concrete pavers are porous, I would not recommend using any sort of abrasive cleaners as it may alter the colour or damage the pavers.
The droplets of Aquadeck will fade over time - so the best course of action is to leave it.

Hello Rosalie,

Thanks for your question! The coverage for the Water Based Deck and Exterior Stain is 12 square metres, per litre, per coat.
For 2 coats, which is the minimum requirement for the Deck and Exterior Stain, you're looking at getting a maximum coverage of 6 square metres per litre.
This however does depend on the porosity of the timber.
