Problems Galore
My 2008 Astra is second hand first couple years it was fine and around 2 years ago the problems started. It suddenly went dead while driving home TWICE, engine problems, warning lights coming on for no reason, and recently speaking from somewhere my son thinks it might be the suspension.
Big boot, good braking nice sized car.
Everything that isn't the inside of the car

So far awesome
I didn't know anything about them until my wife said she would like to get a sporty car. We have owned a lot of Italian sports cars but never an automatic . Wife said auto or nothing . So I looked around and came across the Astra . Took one for a drive and wow- I said to my wife I love this car, feels almost like an Italian car. A bit more research and even though it's badged holden turns out it is Italian . Handles like a dream, superb a/c great design and very little wind blowing you apart when roof is off. It's quite powerful even with 4 ...Read more
people it's very zippy. Handles like it's on railroad tracks . I need to soften the leather a bit with some saddle soap and the roof does take a while to open or close (especially compared to my old spider which took about 15 seconds manually ) but that's a small price to pay for the way this car looks and feels. This ones done 140k so will have to see if it is as reliable as my other Italian cars have been. I am wrapped with it so far - it's a real joy to drive. Looks, handing, wind dynamics, a/c, seats, power, feel on road - just love driving it Slow roof but no big deal

Over two years now, great little car. Had to spend a bit on roof but otherwise really reliable. Heated seats work well, everything is still great. love this car
Coming up to 3 Years now, still love this car, reliable, fun, handles like a dream

1999 Astra
I got this car 4 months ago off a dealership. It has done 223000 kms. Car has been kept in excellent shape. I have done about 9000 kms in these 3 months and I havent had a single glitch. Mine is the CD model. I hope I dont curse it by sharing this info. The only thing not working are the backlights of the lcd screen...so far. On a full tank i have tried going upto 550km, i think it can do a bit more.
Cheers

I have the 2007 CD and bought it brand new. I am happy with my car nothing major is wrong with it but have had little problems.
The air con broke once and got it replaced. it has always been very noisy when exhilarating and the air con is on at the same time.
It's a very reliable car and has served me well in the 6 years i have owed it.
looks good, no major problems
air con broke and makes a funny sound

Junk !!
We have a 2000 city Olympic version with 134k's: what a heap of junk. Air con dead: Engin coils issues: ecu issues and the list goes on: and holden service : worst than ever
Will never buy a holden again: Toyota corolla will be the replacement to have something reliable and durable

first I.e coil pack, ecu (computer), camshaft sensor and just about every other sensor on the engine. Timing belts are due at 60,000kms revised down from 120,000kms due to them breaking and destroying engines due to pistons and valves hitting each other. Head gaskets blow on them, I've lost count of the amount of radiators I've replaced, engine lights are forever coming on. They chew through brake rotors and pads every 20-30,000kms. Rear calipers leak. I could keep going but you get the picture. Made in Belgium and they should have kept them there. You are better buying a 1995-2000 corolla instead. As a non-mechanic, completely agree. I've had almost all of them
We had ours towed away to wreckers last month. Finally died, engine wouldn't crank up and everything else failed: go Holden: we just purchased a corolla hatch which I am sure will provide years of motoring unlike the astra

Just perfect!!
On cold days I just put on the heated seats, hot days I put down the roof with a touch of a button. I've got the 2.2L 4 cylinder automatic and it has so much power, never lags on hills(front wheel drive), overtakes any car in seconds. The car is fuel injected, so sports mode sounds amazing!! I love this car more than my boyfriend! it may be an older car but it still turns heads! The leather seats are awesome, comes in either black, red or beige (rare). All paints come in metallic apart from the reds (not including burgundy). The amazing holden ...Read more

Astra TS - Reliable with a strong engine.
I bought my Holden Astra TS 1.8 manual new in 2004, one of the last of this model. I did 120,000 km with a mix of highway and traffic crawl driving. In that time I fitted a tow bar and pulled a small trailer and a camper trailer. Apart from a battery that died (after 5 years) it never let me down. I always did my own servicing but that only normally consisted of an oil and filter change (genuine Holden filters are cheaper than Supercheap). At 69,000 km after reading all the scare stories about the cam belt, I replaced the whole belt kit an...Read more
d put in a new water pump. The pump had coolant pooled around it so it had been leaking. Cam belt kits and pumps are available from the UK or locally for about 1/3rd of Holden prices. The belt replacement is fundamentally simple to do if you have mechanical experience. Replace the water pump at the same time as a matter of course. The rear shocks started leaking around 110,000 maybe due to trailer use and some very rough roads, but at under $300 fitted I think that was very reasonable. All in all a good, quiet drive with excellent luggage capacity with the seats folded. A solid and driveable engine that pulled strongly in 5th without the need to change down. The radio/stereo was excellent with really well thought out and logical controls. Strong Engine, fuel effecient, radio/stereo, interior layout, luggage capacity. In 9 years no major issues.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Absolute Rubbish!
I purchased this car two months ago, on the third day of driving my 2002 Holden Astra CD sitting at the set of lights the emission light came on, I pulled into a car-park and when I stopped my traction light came on. I decided to drive it around to test out what was going on, it wouldn't allow me to accelerate faster than 40km/h. After sitting at the side of the road turning off the ignition and starting it up again only the emission light had come on, where I proceeded to try and accelerate the traction light came straight back on again. When ...Read more
this was happening the car was chugging and the vibration through the car horrendous! So after 3 days on the tow truck it went, arrived at the Holden dealer where they replaced the computer and coil pack. Picked the vehicle back up and two days later again without fail all the same things happened again! So a mechanic from Holden picked up the car to avoid the towing fee and gave me a courtesy car. I got the car back after 3 days at the workshop replacing the coil they had just placed in with a genuine coil pack this time (which they apparently did the first time). Well, again 1 day later same thing happened again but this time on a Friday night. Saturday morning, drove it up the street to test it and this time only the emission light came on, parked the car up and drove it again 20 minutes later to drive home from a friend’s house where all the lights turned off and it drove perfectly! All weekend it drove fine. I then drove the car on the Tuesday afternoon and the same thing happened again stuck out on the side of the road, this time I arranged the tow truck and it has been in the mechanics coming 3 weeks now. On the second week of them having the car we rang them, we never got a phone call about them receiving the car and never told us on the first week what is wrong with it or how it can be fixed. On that same phone call the mechanic said that he doesn't know what to do but he reckons he was close to fixing it. He said on that exact phone call that he would call later that afternoon, which was 6 days ago and we were still waiting for that phone call and I was still without a car. After the third week had passed onto the fourth; my mum got into contact with the owner dealership and demanded a refund which we have since received a whole refund for. A few days after asking for the refund we got a call from the owner dealership again and he had informed us that the car was fixed after some research he had done himself. He spoke with the mechanic to get it fixed and surprise surprise the car never was fitted with a genuine Holden part once, hence the problem occurring over and over again! Even being told the car has been fixed we didn't want to take this car back with all the problems we experienced with it, we have lost all faith in purchasing another Holden Astra and we are very wary of purchasing Holden itself. Nice to drive when drivable, has a lot of guts, nice steering wheel controls, nice metallic black paint, nice sporty look, neat interior Emission light coming on, traction light coming on, chugging, went through petrol like you wouldn't believeSimilar opinion? Fantastic to drive strong as a tank had two accidents in it one backed out carport with back door open, door still opend and closed even though the top of the door was bent in on its self. Rear ended a car on second crash and all they had to replace was the bumper and aircon hose squashed.

Reliable car
I bought my 2003 manual Astra CDX in 2004. It was a demonstrator with 170 km on the clock and $5000 off. I still have it and intend to keep it for quite awhile (provided my reliable and trustworthy mechanic doesn't retire soon).
I have just had the original brake pads replaced after 100 000 km. Fair amount of wear but I am an old fashioned driver, taught to use the gears and brakes to stop. Also taught to brake early when approaching red lights. Now no more black muck everywhere.
Took the mechanic quite some time to clean things before ...Read more
putting on new pads. Some stupid Euro regulations causes this black muck problem. Have had to have the waterpump replaced at about 95 000 km. Replacing the timing belt at 60 000 km is a pain. But better that than having it break and making a mess of the engine. Arm for rear window mechanism snapped at 100 000 km. Replaced with non-genuine part which was about a third of the price of Holden part. Replaced original battery at 95 000 km. Moving gear lever through the gate from 2nd to 3rd can some times be iffy. Just can't find where 3rd is on occassions. Paint from top of tailgate behind the radio antenna is being worn away. Seat are a bit hard but the racing-type styling means you are not fighting to keep your position when cornering hard. Has a bit of zip when required. Can corner hard without changing down. Holds the road well. Fairly frugal. Indicator on left. If indicator doesn't cancel when turning corner, you realise this in the midst of changing gears with your left hand.Similar opinion? -Thermostat sensor brakes, leading to overheating, costing $250
-Air Compressor failure

There is nothing Holden about this car, it is expensive european junk. Cheap for a runabout but don't expect it to be problem free or cheap to repair. Avoid the OPEL's, just buy a Toyota if you want a reliable and cheap car. Relatively fuel efficent 8.3lt per 100km Expensive and frequent repairs due to a poor buildSimilar opinion? Fairly good car. I bought it with 126,000 kms on the clock 2 years ago and now I have done just over 150,000 kms over this period with a glitch. I have had it checked at two different mechanics and they can't find any issues with it. Might need to change the brake pads soon though. Also I am bit worried with the ECU failing having heard few horror stories from other owner.
Efficient, reliable (so far)
No bells and whistle. Very simple car

I have a 2005 model Astra, automatic. The first 5 years were great, only problem was the back window jamming once. But this year alone I've had problems with the thermostat, indicator and an intermittent leak. But I love my Astra, I enjoy driving it. However, thinking of replacing it soon as I'm worried more things are going to go wrong with it!
Easy to drive, good looking.
Needs better cup holders!! Had problems with electronic windows jamming, left indicator goes haywire every so often.

Good
I think these are a good vehicle, but be careful when buying. Brakes wear, and factory rotor replacements are expensive. I don't think I would purchase the automatic versions, as the 4-speed Aisin transmission is way off the pace in a modern car. The 2.2 litre motor is actually a lotus design used in the Vauxhall VX-220 in Europe. It is an all alloy design, a nice performer, but with a renown appetite for oil, and noisy timing chains. The turbo version offer great performance, but beware of the timing belt interval changes.

A smooth drive with underlying issues
I brought an Astra as my first car, it's a 2001 model with 150000km on the clock. It drives smooth and it's powerful for its size however after two weeks of owning it, the engine has just cut out leaving me broken down in the middle of an intersection. Twice. I believe this is a common problem with Astras. The mechanic told me that it is the ECU which needs replacing by a Holden dealer. I wouldn't recommend that anyone buy one as they are unreliable. A bit disappointed because I loved it so much in the first two weeks!
It's good on fuel, very zippy and drives smooth
Malfunctioning ECU

Considering a few things have gone wrong with the engine, i totally put it past how great the car actually is. I have the 2001 model with 140ks on it and bought it when it had 100 last year. I dont think the previous owner took care of it as well as they should have. I've owned a few cars and the astra has so far been the best buy i have ever made. But, as i said, make sure if you buy one second hand (which is the only way to get one now.. ) make sure you get a warranty that covers alot of things with at least a $2000 bill cover cost and you wi...Read more
ll have no problems whatsoever. I've put xenon headlights into it and it makes a world of difference. Fuel economy is beautiful and its great that the screen tells you pretty much how much you have left to the kilometre as well as every part of the car if something is wearing like "check oil level" "check coolant level" "rear tail light" "park light" etc. 8/10. i suggest buying one if you want one. all cars have problems at some point in their lives, just some are more expensive then others. Has high class considering its sedan/hatch version is mostly all basic, traction control and abs make driving it a breeze (mostly) sound system when working properly is brilliant Blaupunkt CD player dies pretty quick, along with the orange pixels in the screen. If you notice the engine uses a bit of oil dont wait to get it checked out it can lead to huge problems as i found out the hard way (holden now apparently offer a modification for the 2.2 Engine to stop the oil consumption.) Had a few problems with the brakes wearing quick as well as it has moments where it goes through a bit of coolant. Traction control is pretty good in it but if you accelerate (moderately) and do a full lock turn the back end of the car goes sideways alot even with new tyres. Mine had a horrible grinding noise in it when it would accelerate and be under 60-70 kms a hour but it was a minor fix. I advise people to test the manual version first. I purchased the Automatic version and it has no guts at all until its up to about 3-4 thousand revs in second gear. Sports mode is a bit over dramatic, loves first gear alot and mine seems to refuse to change to second sometimes until it valve bounces if sports mode is on. Parts are incredibly expensive, so make sure if you buy one its through a dealer and they give you a pretty good warranty and covers things up to at least $2000. The computer in mine failed about 6 months ago and put the car into "limp mode" a whole new computer itself was $2100 that wasnt including labour to set it up for the car. SPARE KEYS also very expensive to replace, holden quote about $150-$200 for a single key with remote and you cant just get one cut at a key cutting place because holden wont let them. roof gets stuck sometimes when i go to open it, like it goes up a bit and stops and just beeps, but if you give it a little push it usually releases and folds away. Leather seats (especially black ones) are prone to scratches, so be careful if you have metal buttons on the back of your pants.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
