Just a comment on the "off-gassing" people are complaining about
For most people, I don't think transporting this mattress around (aside from taking it back from the store) is going to be a main priority. They don't try and sell the fact that it can be rolled up and transported in-store and most people are just going to take it home, lay it on their bed and sleep on it.
Also, first night, I'm using a mattress topper as everyone should and I can barely notice the smell people seem to be raging about unless I shove my nose right up to the mattress. Also, my mother bought herself one the same day as me and s...Read more
he's hella sensitive to, well, everything, and she hasn't complained once about the smell. For all the doomsayers, the smell is caused by volatile organic compounds and they're nothing to worry about.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

A smell that may outlast religion
Hi Ikea person
the mattress seems to be comfortable enough.
I have 2 different Aldi mattress toppers on it, and the smell
is improving each day. It's a little too late to put the "stink"
warning in the instructions, and it's going to be inconvenient
returning it to the store now that it is a double bed mattress unrolled.
If Ikea is going to sell "stinky" mattresses, they should come
with a pre-purchase warning, rather than people taking them home
and stinking out their bedding and homes. In my case I was sleeping
on a reasonable folding bed at my son's house in Yarraville,

Shockingly bad
Bought a king size for hubby and me 5 years ago, very comfy and lovely sleep quality.Decided to get my teenage son a new double bed frame and mattress but the change in quality of the mattress is shocking.Very firm and uncomfortable even though the medium firm was purchased and after 2 years the springs have exploded through the bottom of the mattress and are over the floor, causing the mattress to sag and be unusable. Also the finish on the bed has started to blister and split, not to mention the bedding bought before xmas has faded and the stitch...Read more
ing has come undone.Shockingly bad quality from a firm that used to be amazing but I've noticed other products they sell are also going downhill.Another company putting profit before quality and customer loyalty.I won't spend my hard earned money here again.

Compact, easy to transport and very comfy
I bought one of these mattresses initially and drove it home in my small Corolla because like all of IKEA products, the Hovag is flat packed (i.e. rolled up and in a space bag). This made the easy of getting it home great. I was sceptical at first but we undid the packaging and were very impressed. The mattress is firm and comfortable. Easy to clean with a sponge for any messes or vacuum for dust.
I was so impressed with the quality that I went back and bought two more and replaced my other kids ones in only one car trip.

Offgassing/New car smell is terrible
Had this for a week and it has made me miserable. We opened the mattress and the room was filled with strong chemical smell. We have a small flat and limited outdoor space, and in October airing outside not an option. Made me feel nauseous and headachy and me and my 15week old daughter slept in living room for 3days because I didn't want to expose her to the off gassing. Husband slept OK on it, but commented the smell was strong. Even with window wide open for several days it's still present and I have been waking up with mild headache, and eve...Read more
n though my daughter sleeps in seperate cot by wide open door I still worry what she is being exposed to. On top of that, we got firm (husbands choice)instead of medium firm (my preference) and so I've been uncomfortable as well- I was planning on getting topper. We could return it with guarantee but the logistics of getting it back to Ikea mattress make me want to cry, and there is no guarantee a replacement would be less pungent. All in all a miserable experience...Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

OK for couple of years, will eventually need an upgrade
We bought a Hovag in 2015 and were happy with it - no ack issues and comfy sleep. However the structural integrity of the mattress wears out eventually and we had to upgrade this year. I would say it is not a great mattress but ok for the price they charge.

Simply terrible
Absolutely awful mattress. Had for less than 2 years and had to report fault to Ikea, sent an independent engineer who reported back that it was not faulty but had been excessively over used! This item is sold with a 25yr warranty so would expect it still intact after a couple of years! I'm 5'2 about 11 stone so not massive and use to sleep each night..... overuse?! The memory foam around the springs gas just split apart along the sides where glued together, definitely a defect. Have bought many products from Ikea and have always been pleased so was so disappointed by Ikea attitude so thankful only faulty item we've had as there aftercare is as bad as there mattress

Great Mattress for low budget
I had been searching for a new mattress for some time but was put off by the huge price tag on high end mattresses. I suffer from chronic back pain and so I wanted one that was going to support my back, help me get a good nights sleep and be comfortable. It has only been a week since I bought this mattress, but I am loving it already! As with previous comments, I had to air it for several hours to get rid of the smell, but aside from that, I have no issues with it at all. Great purchase at a great price!

Sacked three times after a month!
This is the worst mattress we've ever had. We bought it on special in the king size, two people, both weigh around 60kg. We've had it for around 3 months when our back started to hurt terribly and the mattress had started sacking. Ikea left us absolutely no option despite it being under warranty, they said we can't replace to a new Hovag as we bought the faulty one on special, so have to pay the difference or downgrade.
We had a second bedframe in queen size so got the queen size hovag as replacement to not having to pay the difference. The q...Read more

Perfect mattress, great price
This is the most comfortable mattress I've slept on, no back pain whatsoever great support. Granted I weigh 50kg and sleep on my back so I like firm mattresses. It's been almost 2 years now and it's still wonderful :)

The Worst Mattress I have Ever Slept On
I bought the Hovag only 3 months ago when moving into a new place. I've developed so much back pain from it and it's so uncomfortable. It is literally one of the worst beds I have slept on in my life, including hostels, dorms, etc etc. I normally quite like ikea products and most of my furniture is Ikea so when my mum suggested just getting a mattress from there at the same time I thought it wouldn't be the worst idea. It was one of the worst furniture ideas I've made. Bought for $350 and I'm trying to sell it for $200. I bought a sleepmaker on...Read more
sale and can't wait for it to arrive (previously owned a sleepmaker and can highly recommend the investment). This mattress is shocking and IKEA needs to stop selling mattresses. Their "exchange it or love it" policy means spending $180 on delivery & back as well if you don't have a car and got it delivered. Buy a secondhand sealy or sleepmaker if you're on a budget, do not buy thisSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

This mattress is terrible.
This mattress gave me back pain and has terrible support! I was told IKEA were high quality mattresses and provide plenty of support, but I just don't really think this is true after switching back to a more expensive mattress.

Only good for a non-adult
I bought this early 2017 because the mattress for my son wasn't great.
I didn't really have a budget, but I figured I didn't want to spend too much over the top; so I jumped onto IKEA's website and started looking at mattresses of course IKEA was not the only place I was looking.
The price was appealing overall, so I went down to the Springvale store in Melbourne and went to the bedding and mattress section. The entire mattress was rolled up by the time I went to pick it up in the allocated aisles. Once I took it home and unrolled it, fo...Read more
llowing the instructions, I had to leave the mattress alone for up to 72 hours. This was to ensure that the mattress expanded properly. After 72 hours, I went and tried it out, the base of the mattress was also from IKEA, a collapsible supporting metal frame. My immediate impression is that the mattress does not have a great deal of support. Which is why the title of the review is best suited for a non-adult, somewhere in between a child and a teenager who will be none the wiser. My son has yet to try this out, but at least its new and should meet his growing needs until such time he grows out of it.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Excellent product and a financially smart buy.
Our previous very expensive sealy posturepaedic mattress was overdue for replacement and I had developed backache when getting out of bed every morning. Most other good quality mattresses were very expensive and as we had previously purchased queen mattresses for our children and found these durable and very comfortable, we decided to purchase a king size for our bed. My backache disappeared within a few days and this mattress proved even more comfortable than anticipated. We also like the 25 year guarantee. We did try other mattresses and they...Read more
did not seem any more comfortable or supportive but these were twice the price. The only downside is the shape is european which is more square in shape than rectangular thus does not fit our bed 100% perfectly but not a major issue for us. I can honestly say this is the most comfortable mattress we have owned. As an aside, the new smell only lasted for 2 days and then disappeared. Would recommend airing first as per Janie's review on Feb 13.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Comfort is Ensured
I purchased this mattress after experiencing poor back support with othe products that i had used in the past. Having gone to the doctors and being told to purchase a new mattress that would be more suitable to the level of comfort required to improve my back pain i went shopping in order to find the perfect one for me, it here i stumbled across the Ikea Hovag. This mattress is a perfect mix of comfort and affordability and i have even had complements from friends and family about how comfortable the matress is. The mattress has been very durab...Read more
le in my past two years of ownership as i have never had a problem or issue with its ability to perform its intended purpose. The support that the mattress provides allows you to feel as if you are sinking into a bed of the most comfortable pillows, this mattress has also improved the condition of my back that was caused by previous mattresses.Similar opinion? Awful smell
I feel very concerned re these mattresses and the smell. Our 1st one last week was extremely bad (damp, musty) and was replaced straight away with apology. This new one is completely different; still a strong smell but not rank dampness ... just of plastic - still unpleasant though. Feel worried after reading other reviews re carcinogens. It's comfortable but the smell means I wouldn't buy another.

Son loves it
I went with my son to buy this mattress for him, he's a tall lad and has had foam mattresses before as a child, he and his fiancee have a really good night sleep on the mattress and we aired it in the room for 12 hours with the window open to let the new smell escape, no smell after that just a good might sleep, my mother has just bought one also.

The smell that people are talking about is the chemical formaldehyde which is a known carcinogen,
Never again! Why we allow such nasty chemicals to be put into something that we spend a third of our lives lying on I will never know. If its smelly and musty complain to the store and get your money back, these beds shouldn't be on the market!

Very comfortable, excellent choice
Great mattress, comfortable, soft but firm, almost no smell (only in the begining "smell"of new).
Unrolled in the morning, used for sleeping that evening.
All in all, excellent comfort for great price!

What fire retardants are used in the Ikea Hovag. I have asked at Ikea and they said they had no idea. I have also rang them and still no answer. My mattress was made in China and as it had a VERY strong smell at first and still smells after 8 weeks what is used in it?

we bought a queen sized Hovag and bed on Saturday this week in Canberra, and our whole house now smells of the musty dirty wet mop smell. It is not getting any better. How do we go about returning the mattress as we only have a sedan vehicle? Can we get an Ikea representative to assist with pickup and then seek a refund for the mattress. We shall be keeping the bed though and seek another mattress from elsewhere., one that we can smell prior to buying! I at first thought because of all of the rain we have had in Canberra that we had developed mould under the house, but checked that by crawling under there, and then worked out it was the mattress, very disappointed, as the smell is so bad.

I certainly didn't experience that. Contact IKEA ? maybe it got damaged in storage as this is not a issue they all have.
Write an email to Ikea. They will contact you quickly. You CANNOT just call customer service they will direct you to writing an email. (At least this is how WA works.) Yes they will pick up for you and it wont cost you but only if they say the mattress has a problem. If they find no problem then they will charge around $70. It sounds like mould in the mattress so please sleep elsewhere if you arent already.
