My favourite kitchen appliance
This heavy duty mixer is perfect for larger batches of batters/doughs
Love that you can adjust the speed and do other things while this creams your butter and sugar to perfection
So easy to clean and use
Comes with lid for storing prepared ingredients in the fridge.
The wonderful retro style is just an added bonus to this fabulous appliance.

Terrible
In follow up to my previous review regarding service of my mixer in Cairns. I called into the "Service Agent" in Cairns last Friday where I had left my mixer in September last year and found that the sign had gone and the next door business owner told me Mr.Woods had gone to PNG. We inspected Woods Electrical's shed (he had the key) and all I found was a very old mixer - not mine - stuffed into my box and another old mixer in parts on the bench amongst a trainwreck of a workbench. I'd like to start off by saying that I actually like the Kitchenaid mixers, they are some of the more nicer looking mixers on the market, and for the price you pay you would think more robust... I'm only writing this review to inform other consumers of some of the pitfalls that I've discovered and don't want people to fall into the same trap, especially after paying approx $900 for a mixer. the products short comings apply for all Kitchenaid mixers. At first clances this is a nice looking mixer, accessories included with this mixer are a Whisk, Paddle, Dough Hook, pouring shields(2) and 2 4.8L stainless steel mixing bowls with handles). The extra bowl is handy when making meringue or other products requiring multi-staged mixing. This mixer differs from the deluxe K5 Mixer in the following ways: - Only 1 stainless steel bowl - No thermal overload switch (utterly useless) - more on this later - Different colour In fact if these mixers where the same colour and side by side anyone would be hard to tell the difference. The specifications of the KPM50 (and the K5 for that matter) include, a 315W motor (300W on other artisan mixers), height 42cm, width 35cm, depth 27.5cm & it weighs about 12Kg. In summary the mixer doesn't take up much space on your bench top and it's weight means it can mix well without moving around. For me warranty is a bit part of a manufactures faith in there product and it is the first pitfall on my list, the KPM50's warrant is 12 months parts and labour against manufactures faults (NO REPLACEMENT WARRANTY!!!), the K5 deluxe's warranty, Full 3 month replacement warranty plus 3 years parts and labour against manufacturer's faults for domestic use. Since these two mixers are virtually the same (except for the thermal overload switch on the KPM50) I now know which one I should have bought. But what about the theraml overload switch I hear you say... Waste of space and the extra money is my response, the switch is there to guard against the motor overheating, where the mixer will switch itself off if it gets too hot, never happens, in fact on one instance I had to intervene and turn the machine off when it started to smoke when mixing some dough. The technicians at Peter McIness (Kitchenaid distributor) couldn't say when the overload switch should cut in. So not worth the extra money. This leads me to my next pitfall, dough weights, the specs for both the KPM50 and K5 say it can "mix 3 standard bread loaves at 700 grams each with minimised flour puff and a minimum mixing capacity of 2 egg whites." I don't doubt the minimum mixing however 3 x 700grams = 2.1Kg of dough if my math is correct...THIS IS RUBBISH. The mixer will never mix this amount of dough, Customer Service tells me that mixing capacity should not exceed 1.5kg of dough...I think this is still too high, which raises the question why have the above on the website as it's specifications? Finally this is my last pitfall and I think it's the most important, all of the Kitchenaid mixers have what is called a fuse gear. It is designed if the mixer is under stress for a unspecified period of time to break and prevent the motor from overheating and hence seizing. Not a bad feature considering the price to replace the motor however at about $90.00 to replace the gear not cheap either, this part is also not covered by the warranty. This begs the question why have a termal overload switch on a mixer where the fuse gear will break long before the switch trips? Let me know if you figure out the answer... In conclusion let me sum up, I still think the KPM50 is a nice mixer, as long as you don't EVER overload it...EVER!!!! However for the price you pay...Buy the K5 deluxe instead, same mixer better warranty.2 comments
I used my K5 to mix 650g of dough and it's already struggling...let alone 1.5kg...
Now I only mix around 400g of dough each time.
