Best Car to Buy
My 2014 Discovery rotary gear selector locked itself in Drive. Fortunately another owner posted a fix which I did and now it's all good.
Apart from this issue the car has been faultless and is by far the best car I've owned for comfort, safety, flexibility on and off road and power and performance. Value for money second hand is really good with more features than a Toyota for half the price!
The 8 speed auto is really good and makes towing a breeze.
Purchased in October 2021 for A$39,000.00.

Wouldn't risk taking it off road
I use my Discovery 4 for both business and private, owning a Discovery 3 previously... should of listened to myself before buying the 4. Car is serviced regularly
5 years old now and just reached 102000km. Back in the workshop again replacing the other manifold now that has cracked, (yep its plastic) apparently this is a common problem and replacement part has been molded differently to avoid future problems but Land Rover does not tell you that!. Did I mention $1700 each replacement. At 50,000 the centre dial gear selector locked in reverse an...Read more

Discovery 4
I bought a 2011 Discovery 4 in 2015 with 55000klm on it . It now has 150000klm now and has proven to be a great 4wd. It’s towed a caravan around most of OZ easily and is a very comfortable economical everyday car. People we speak to with Discovery 3or 4s all are also very happy with them. Ours has the 2.7 ford diesel I changed all the trans and diff oils at 100000 The disco is a very good vehicle.

Great car
One of the best decisions ever made. Road comfort is worth it with its air suspension. Bought a dealer demo for 70k. It replaces prado for its money spent. Once a year service or 26k kms service. Prado or any other cars needed two or three services at this mileage. Cost 700$ for service and is a dreAm to ride.now I prefers long trips. Can occupy 7 adults comfortable

Seat belt fraying and trim wearing
Dream to drive, fuel sensor in tank replaced now ok. BUT! we have a 2013 model and I have seen others with the seat belt fraying and the trim on the housing wearing through sometimes seat belt will not retract LR will not take responsibility said even if under waranty they would not. bought Bruce Lynton Same attitude.
September 6th 2017 Update: Air bag in suspension

s the buck or have no powers. Now we have trouble with the door on the passenger side not opening to fix it was quoted around $800. Also from 100,000 k the air compressor is slow and is failing. Was charged $300 plus to diagnose. Wonder how much to repair it? Too many issues with this car. We were told by a Land Rover dealer, "what do you expect it is four years old" so go to a cheaper car that lasts longer than that. Royal Warrant? Means nothing these days certainly not quality. We do not want to sell this lemon to some one else as we were advised to do. They suggested to get rid of it after two years. Both Bruce Lynton Gold Coast and Fosseys Tamworth. Guess it is not a luxury car but just some sort of missed promoted status symbol. We do not do any off road driving. October 5th 2017 Update: Frayed seat belt, worn seat belt component, passenger door actuators failure, air suspension needs a 2013 Land Rover. The car is a delight to drive but the cost and failure of parts after 3 years is very expensive. The replacement of the door actuator was quoted at $540 plus $90 for quote the door would not open. The air suspension was checked as it is slow to rise cost $180 possible compressor $1350 plus labour to replace this. My husband replaced the actuator with an original part for $300 tops 2 hours as he was unfamiliar with We could have bought the little motor from China for $20 but we were travelling. The seat belt right at the top not across the body area is frayed the plastic trim has worn will not be long before it cracks. Our car is treated very very well it looks new inside and out.Purchased in July 2021.

There are lemons out there!!
It has all the makings of the perfect family car. Unfortunately our car was extremely unreliable and therefore, very unsafe.
We bought our car new from Barbagellos in Perth in 2010. At 27,000 kms, the first of the car's significant issues presented itself.
The car developed computer related faults that would cause it to shut itself down, even during highway speeds, forcing you to manhandle the car to the side of the road. As the engine would cut itself out, there was no power steering during this time, making this extremely hard even for a ...Read more

Best 4WD available
The smoothest car I have driven. Air suspension is very good.
Very economical. Driving around in Sydney traffic I can regularly achieve better than 10 litre / 100 KM.
Opted for Tech Pack and rear air conditioning. Worthwhile taking.
The only improvement I would seek is better maps in the navigation system.
The best car I have driven. Every passenger has been impressed with the quality.
Dealership provided outstanding customer service.
Purchased in April 2021 for A$87,000.00.

Excellent vehicle, very impressed.
Bought our Discovery new in September 2015, so far we've done 20k in it, mainly around town but we've also taken it on longer trips and on some fire trails. I did the Land rover off road course which was offered free, I knew I would be impressed with its capability and I was. The only slight critisism is the infotainment system, very slow. I tend to use my iphone as a GPS instead of the built in system. The Meridian sound system is fantastic as is the DAB radio. Very comfortable car for carrying children in. A bit thirsty around town, but that could be due to my driving style, surprisingly quick if you put your foot down.

New to Land Rover
Just took delivery of a 2014 Discovery and so far the wife and I love it. We'll never take it off road we have no desire to do so. people who don't 4WD are allowed to buy them!
Mid year update 11k in and it's as good as they say, quiet, smooth and efficient, the fuel economy got better as it got older. You really need to test drive one and find a way to afford I did and couldn't be happier.

Reading into the review by Toyota Hilux lover, one must assume there is a bit of prefabricated BS. There are always going to be people that get a lemon, hence the need for true lemon laws to protect those suffer. I have had my D4 for around 3 years now, the last of 2.7 TDV6's and I prefer it over the higher spec'd twin turbo 3.0L's.My vehicle is non standard as I have set it up for offroad touring. I run smaller 17" Performance BB6 alloys with Cooper ST Maxx for better offroad grip and toughness. The 17" rims will fit on the 2.7 TDV6's due to s...Read more
maller brake rotors, unfortunately the 3.0L's will only go down to an aftermarket 18 which costs more and still has limited tyre choices. I also run an OL steel bullbar with a warn winch, snorkel, and other bits of kit. I haven't had any technical issues offroad in my time, and I take to vehicle through all sorts of terrain, mud and water, often towing my Kimberley kamper. No brand is immune to lemons, Toyota has had their sentence in fair share of problems with vehicle recalls in recent times. At the time of purchase my only other option I considered was a 200 series in the Attitude edition. I couldn't justify the 28k extra over my D4 TDV6. Choose wisely for what your needs are, for genuine 7 seat 4wd that can sit adults in the rear the D4 is the best.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
A $1000 Hilux
Discovery 4 with ARB bull bar roof rack and lots more $$ spent . First trip light 4wd for a fish and on the way out it kills itself airbags brakes ect the dash lights up. No phone coverage so on its belly this poor 4wd is stuck with a 2.5 and 7 month in the back me and my wife have made one massive mistake in buying a Land rover.
Keep the land rover as a show lemon in the city and buy something not so computerized

Discovery improved even more
Have just upgraded from a Land Rover Discovery 4 to the new model which is just known as the Discovery. To the uninitiated it looks identical, but externally the front lights, side mirrors, grille and bumper have been altered as have the rear lights. The real improvements are to the infotainment system, gearbox and the ride quality. To start with, its very quiet; there's almost no engine or road noise, you just waft along. Sure its new so you'd expect it to be tight, which it is, no rattles or any jarring to disturb you regardless of road ...Read more
surface. The new 8 speed gearbox helps the engine to stay in its power band so it feels much quicker, but uses less fuel. My average around town with the D4 was around 12.4 l/100kms, its now 11.1 l/100km, which for a 2.7 tonne vehicle is amazing. By way of comparison, my 2.7l D3 averaged up to 17l/100kms around town (we live in a hilly area). The infotainment system uses Meridian sound system instead of Harmon Kardon and definitely sounds better with a much richer sound. We optioned in the DAB radio and it's a huge improvement over FM. Best of all many of the stations are commercial-free. The touch screen has become a bit more complicated and am still getting used to it. You can now stream audio via Bluetooth from your mobile/iPad, and you can also choose from multiple bluetooth phones instead of it just grabbing the first one it sees. The interior is much as before except the old gearstick has been replaced by a machined silver aluminium knob which rises up when the car starts, a wee bit of theatre which the kids love. There are also paddles behind the steering wheel to change gears just like in a sports car (don't think I'll be using them much). The Terrain Response system is much as before but I hear they've added a sand launch system to assist in soft deep sand which I haven't tried yet. In summary the car feels much more like a luxury saloon than an off-road vehicle. I think Land Rover have concentrated on improving the overall quality feel and to my mind they have succeeded. Of course it's still amongst the best off-roaders so can't wait to take it to Fraser Island and see how it performs in the sand. Quietness, smoothness, performance, fuel economy, sound system They still come standard with Goodyear Wrangler ATR tyres which wear very quickly and are ridiculously expensive to replace5 comments
Hi, the new model is still discovery 4 I believe and the XXV has not arrived yet. Why did you buy 2.7L why not 3L?
The new model is just known as Discovery, there's no 4 anymore and this is the first in the new family of vehicles to be called Discovery in the same way that there is now a family of Range Rovers. I... Read more
bought the 3.0l SDV6 Diesel, although the 3.0 Supercharged V6 petrol is the same price. I didn't drive one so can't comment on how that drives but the SDV6 is super quiet and smooth and more economical. I think they've firmed up the suspension a little so it rolls less in the corners but seems to ride a little firmer over small bumps. It still feels very limousine-like and am really enjoying driving it, it feels like an occasion every time.Brilliant! I am waiting for the XXV model thanks.

My Disco 4 is a fantastic vehicle
It is fitted with a factory nav package which is totally substandard for a high quality vehicle and Landrover chooses to do nothing about it despite my protestations since new . Quote $500 to upgrade the software with no guarantee it is better .Silly stuff when one can buy software for the whole of Europe for $150 or less . This package devalues the Landrover brand
everything
Rubbish nav package

Disco 4 the best!
Couldn't be happier, great 4wd, just need more service centres.
Tows my 2t van with ease and uses 14L / 100 km doing it.
I'd like a more basic model though so I would feel more comfortable taking it in the bush.
Like the style, love the air suspension as its self levelling.

Brilliant off-roader. It's also my shopping car around town and I love it.
My hubby bought this for our drives round the outback as a tourer and towing car for our caravan. It does this absolutely brilliantly, comfortable, reliable and with a huge capacity for all our stuff. It has taken a lounge suite in the back, also (once) 2 ovens, a cooktop, and a dishwasher. That's how big it is for loads. We have a second battery and run our fridge off it in warm weather.
I also drive it round town as my shopping car, and for a small woman such as I, it is surprisingly easy to drive and to park. I also find the vision is wa...Read more
y better than my other car. The big panoramic windows mean I can see all I need to, and the mirrors don't hide other traffic behind them. Its fuel consumption is quite reasonable for such a big heavy car, I usually get about 8.5 to 9L/100 around town, and low eights on the highway. It also gets up and goes very nicely for overtaking, there is NO turbo lag as it has 2 sequential turbos which mean that one comes in at the bottom end of the revs and the other cuts in at the higher end, to keep you accelerating smoothly and progressively. Never had anything go wrong with it, and will never trade it in on any other off-roader. Can't say enough good stuff about this car. reliability, comfort, driveability, performance, off-road brilliance. seats a bit soft for my liking. Also standard radio not that flash.Similar opinion? Beautiful piece of kit......
Brilliant go anywhere, pull anything, beautifully built motor. Gorgeous to drive on or off road and unlike some models before it, perfectly reliable. Would happily have another - so impressed that we have bought my wife a Land Rover (Freelander 2). Living in Australia it gets a real workout on and off road and is incredibly capable.
Lavishly equipped, luxury interior, versatile engine with loads of grunt, beast of a car.
Leather a bit industrial, expensive to buy and to own.

Great Car!
I have owned 3 Discoveries, but this model is the best by far. An easy car to drive with plenty of power. A bit of a gas (i.e. diesel) guzzler, but this has to be expected in a car of this size and weight. I would buy another at the dro of a hat.

Excellent
This is easily the most comfortable and capable 4wd I have owned (3). It is also excellent value for money even against Japanese 4wd models from Nissan, Mitsubishi and Toyota, if you compare models with similar features.
Value for money; Excellent v6 diesel and 6-speed auto combo; Comfortable and smooth on road; equally capable off road; Roomy inside; Feel solid and secured; Good fuel consumption for weight ( match manufacturer's claim, unlike the Japanese makers who usually understate theirs in real life condition); Luxurious feel inside like ...Read more

Perfect family car for us. With four kids we need a capable go anywhere car. This is it. Very comfy and quiet. The mrs loves it. 3.0 litre diesel is awesome it has some serious grunt. Was happy to sell the toyota to get into this. Superb interior. It goes to work, school, shopping and can tackle a rough bush track or sand dunes on the weekends.
Everything
service can be a bit dearer than toyota.
