Astounding sports car.
I've got a 1994 Mitsubishi FTO GPX edition. The GPX is the top of the line on the model range, featuring the 2.0L DOHC V6 which utilises Mitsubishi's Mivec technology, which pushes the power to 147KW at 7,500RPM, and just over 200NM of torque at 6000RPM respectively. Whilst these numbers might not seem impressive, the car only weighs 1,200KG, making the power to weight ratio of this car greater then the current Toyota 86 sports cars. The torque operates near peak levels from 3,000RPM right through til 7,500RPM, and you are able to let it climb ...Read more
to 8,000 RPM til you hit the red line and need to find another gear. The car has a low centre of gravity, enabling it to embrace corners at insane speeds, and as a front wheel drive vehicle has been described as one of the best front wheel drive sports cars ever produced. Helping my FTO, it has been lowered more, but this was more for visual appeal then anything else. The coupling of the power to weight ratio, and the low centre of gravity combines to make this a very quick point-to-point car. As the car wasn't produced in insane numbers to begin with, and was only available to Australia through privately importing the FTO's, there are not many on Australian roads, which combined with their incredible look, make for a real head turner. Surely aftermarket parts makers should dislike the FTO, because how is it possible to better a look that is already so sexual? Inside, the seats are fully adjustable bucket style seats, which make up for the relative stiffness of a sports car in the area of comfort. There is plenty of room on the front two seats, but the back two seats do have a severe lack of leg and head room. Visibility from the driver's seat is relatively good, however there are a couple of blind spots that it is advisable to be careful of when driving. Reliable, sporty to look at, fast, different.
