Since my partner and I changed our lifestyle to accomodate a Pescetarian diet; we have removed a majority of diary and meat products from our general eating habits to a mixture of seafood and plant-based foods. So as my partner and I love our coffees, we initially tried other non-diary milk and quickly settled on soy. Using the existing “commercial” grinder, I immediately notice inconsistencies in the way the bean is delivered; and after looking at how much the grinder sells in the retail shops; which at this point was almost a 30:1 ratio compare with my coffee machine. I didn’t think it was important to upgrade the coffee grinder as well. After discussing with my partner, I decided to replace it with the same brand as the coffee machine; thus making the ratio to a respective 3:1. Perhaps it is just me, but it makes sense to have consistency and quality in every thing we consume, in this case coffee. PACKAGING As it is my second experience in the purchase of this brand, the packaging is perfection. Although the difference being in this instance was regular foam compared to the coffee machine which used plastic foam with laser-cut inserts. In this instance, the box was not as large as the coffee machine, but still had the “Made in Italy” wording printed in many sides of the box. It’s almost like reviewing Dyson packaging with excessive amounts of smart cardboard; but in this case, with excessive amounts of foam. Opening the box, you’re greeted to a very large piece of foam with some laser cut inserts and after removing the top layer, you find all the bits wrapped in clear plastic bags; one for the coffee bean holder, another for the main machine, the manual sitting on its own (in colour and binded) and the portafilter holder accessory attachment. Peeling away the clear plastic for the portafilter holder is a matte finish solid metal, its heavy and screws into place in front and on the bottom of the machine. It comes with two screws and two rubber inserts for the back end of the portafilter holder. With the two existing portafilters that came with my coffee machine, it fits snuggly without a worry of it falling off. PRODUCT As this grinder comes in different colour options, I have chosen to match my coffee machine with a “CHROME” polished finish. When compared to the Sunbeam Coffee Grinder that we had, the footprint is almost identical; except wider in depth. Previously with the Sunbeam, it use to sit on top of a makeshift tray to collect the mess every time it collects grinded beans onto the portafilter. After of which to top up the difference, we would end up using a small plastic container to fill up the difference and using a spoon to put the difference into the portafilter which was part of a Delonghi coffee machine. No more, we don’t have to do that ever again why? The grinder has a funnel delivery system; so that when you place the portafilter onto the portafilter holder, it directly channels the grinded coffee beans into it. The unit has a power up switch on the right side near the base. Once powered, the LED display at the top of the unit lights up with a letter “R”. This is illuminated over a wide black space, so to power it on, you just need to press on to the letter “R” and the whole unit wakes up with other touch-sensitive options. By default from new, when the device wakes up after pressing the “R”, there is a default timer of 6.0 seconds at the bottom left corner, there is a circle with a coffee mug shown for one (1) shot of coffee. On either side of the timer, there are additional plus “+” and minus “-“ circles that allows you to adjust your single shot coffee intensity. On the bottom right side of the display, there is another circle which is suppose to display double shots with a higher default timer. PROS vs CONS - Quality build - Quality packaging - Made in Italy - Innovative delivery system from bean to grinded coffee into a channel / funnel design leaving little-to-none mess to clean up CONS - Pricing (relative) FINAL THOUGHTS The grinder will suit your needs whether its in the office or at home. It has a number of pre-programmed and customised options for your coffee experience. To answer the elephant in the room: If I had the chance to rethink this through in the beginning, I would have purchased something different; however the rationality of thought may be skewed, whether a cheaper price and similar quality could be achieved perhaps. Although to reiterate, I don’t have any experience what so ever when it comes to coffee machines; I can only hope to cross my fingers and mystically pray that this purchase as well as the coffee machine will last for years to come. This grinder from the Rocket Expresso range; is the entry-level model. Overall, the cost of my expenditure on coffee is about 2 to 3 cups a day and usually purchased from local coffee shops; and over the course of a year, the total cost of my coffee consumption alone is the same as buying the two Rocket Expresso branded coffee machine and grinder. If you can afford it, love coffee, want to save money in the long run, then why not?
