The screw that holds the cover plate just keeps spinning around. How do i fix this.
1 answer
Mine too. Doesn't seem an answer & annoyed as took it back and told I was rough on it. I was careful & cleaned it after use. Next use I can't unskew the cover plate to put the chain on the blade.
Between this and previous tightening screw issues; such a useful product becomes useless.
Please reply. I live in Western Australia & wondering if I should send this somewhere as its under warranty? Gayle

My Ryobi Pole Pruner smells like an electrical fault inside the housing. How do I open up the housing? I have taken out all screws but it seems to stick together at the pole entrance. Would appreciate help before I break it.

Has the oil leak on these been fixed?

The cap seems to have a deliberate hole for heat expansion. Thats a nuisance storage issue. We need 2 caps.
Mine 1st one too spewed oil so Seems that too might be too common.
One Bunnings were unhelpful on both issues.
Another helped by replacing that 1st one yet now the plate stuck has me frustrated as I use only ryobi battery tools

Can I use thread cutting oil as a lubricant in the pole saw?
1 answer
my guess is no. the chain lube has a sticky factor designed to adhere to the chain and bat. Cutting oil is designed as a high flow coolant. I wouln't risk it.

Just purchased and I'm not sure how I should add chain oil .. the filler hole has steel wool in it making refill slow. Should I remove the steel wool and replace when filling is complete please?
4 answers
I am not an expert but as I understand it, just fill the reservoir with the steel wool in situ. I think the steel wool acts as a baffle to prevent the oil sloshing around when the pole saw is in use. Pulling the steel wool in and out will damage the steel wool and produce small steel particles that may may their way thru the lubrication system and damage the saw bar and chain.i have googled these saws and the earlier ones are prone to leak oil everywhere. Keep your receipt and return the saw if you end up with oil down the pole handle etc.
Thanks Greg I'll take your advise.
Gazza, l totally agree with Greg. I have one and you need to be very careful, on how much oil you put in. Too much and it will go everywhere and not enough, the chain will jam and its an extremely fine line on getting it right. The sponge needs to stay in, it’s a poor excuse for not letting the oil leak. I actually got a higher density oil, which help with elevating the leak, but it still happens. My best suggestion is that don’t have it above your head for more than 5mins st a time and then lay it down with the handle higher than the head. No matter what response you get from Ryobi, there is a design fault with the oil storage. Cheers Dave

Just bought one (from Bunnings) reading reviews now and a little hesitant! What does the hexagonal "lock/unlock" screw thing next to the blade actually do? Does it need to be tight? What a useless set of instructions! I've seen so much negative in the comments on this saw, I don't want to ruin it before I start.
1 answer
Hi Barry don't despair. It seems like you have one that's not leaking oil down the handle so your ahead already. The hex nuts, there are 2. The bigger one perpendicular to the bar once removed with the cover exposes the gear that runs the chain and oil outlet and when tightened, keeps the bar and chain clamped in line and meshing with the gear. The second hex nut smaller and parallel to the bar on the other side tightens the chain. You will have to loosen the bigger hex nut to be able to adjust the smaller hex nut so there is only a few mm of play in the chain. Do Not Over Tighten the bigger hex nut or you may strip the thread as one blogger did, that won't make your day and will render the tool useless. If you don't tighten it enough initially, the bar may come loose and the chain may come off the bar but that's no big deal just put it back together and tighten it a bit more then.

I have just unpacked my pole pruner and filled the oil tank. With the unit upright, the oil has emptied and ran down the pole, before I have had a chance to even start the pruner. Is this normal or should I take it back? Can it be adjusted so the oil doesn't empty like that?
2 answers
I’d take that one back. Not something that is required
To be adjusted.
you may find some oil will leak over time. I've had that with other saw's to the point that I always emptied them when putting them away. But not straight away. Take it back.

Does anyone have any idea why my pole saw (working 2 minutes ago) now refuses to run? I have checked for blockage under the cover and checked tension...next?

Check the connections in the pole segments maybe? Try a different battery?
From anything like loose battery connections to battery failure. To motor seizure. But with the limited information cannot be sure.
I have had both loose connections in segment joins causing stoppage, as well as having a burnt out spade connector to the motor inside the head unit, caused from oil leaking into the motor housing. Replaced terminal and it worked. I had both these issues at the same time as I had left the unit for some time before trying to fix it, so I almost tossed the unit before testing all possibilities.

I haven't used my pruner much, but now it only seems to cut at the end and not along the 2 sides.
Could I have put the chain back in the wrong direction; i.e. clockwise / counter cw ?
Or would the chain blunt quite quickly, and require sharpening again.
6 answers
From my experience, the chain can become dull quickly if you hit anything other that timber. Including dirt. A yes, I have been caught putting a chain on backwards. The sharp edge needs to be on the front of the teeth in direction it travels, which ever way that is.
Right, answer much appreciated. I will take a closer look tomorrow. I have placed the damn thing on gumtree. I recently found a simple bow saw was 10x better at cutting thick branched !
Many thanks. Will feedback later as to whether chain was facing the wrong direction...
Depends what youve been cutting. If its palm trees it will blunt quicker. Might need a new chain.
