Hi, I've got the 46160p and I'm having trouble with it. It sat for a while, now it runs slow and won't cut grass to save it's life. Tried cleaning the carby which helped but still same problem. However if i leave the carby a bit loose, it runs at max throttle. Is this a gasket problem somewhere? It also sputters and spits out black smoke

Can't help you Umesh. I can only suggest you take the old plug to your nearest auto/electrical outlet and they will match it for you.

Good day Jeffery,
See earlier questions and answers. The part No is 099980097037. You can search it on line, order through Special Orders at Bunnings or, like me, chase one up at your local mower shop. Might be worth getting two. They are rubber rubbish and will perish quickly.
Hope that helps, Col.

call bunnings, speak to special orders, costs about $4

Part number is longer than the fuel line. 099980097037. You can order one through Bunnings as Alex has suggested. Try a local mower shop if the Bunnings delay is too great.. The fuel lines are rubber and will perish quickly. I don't understand why Ryobi persist with such a sub-standard but critical item.

An oval piece of black foam came off my new mower
I think its from above the blade and under the motor
Is it packaging or a filter

Good day Jan,
Sounds a bit puzzling. The only obvious black foam I can think of is the oval air filter which is contained in the hinged box on the front left side (looking from the rear) of the mower. This can only come loose if the filter box is bumped open - which happens pretty easily - but will be quite obvious because the covering hinged flap will be hanging loose or completely dislodged. Apart from that, I can't help.

Hi Col
Many thanks for your reply
Yes the cover is off - (unfortunately not hanging) and the bits of foam have curves and would fit in there!
Can replacements be purchased in New Zealand or must they be ordered on line?

Good day again Jan,
I'm sorry for the delayed response. I only just got back on this site to answer another question. I don't know who sells Ryobi gear in NZ. In Australia parts can be ordered through Bunnings. If in doubt, check with Ryobi customer assistance - not always very helpful - or talk to your local mower shop. They will probably charge you more but get you mowing quicker.
The filter box is a bloody pain. The way it is located means it is easily bumped and the slightest bump causes the covering flap to open. Having had it happen about a hundred times I have finally learned to be ultra careful about objects on the left side when mowing.
Good luck!

I can't locate where the oil or dipstick is on my Ryobi 160cc OHV mower

Good day George,
Not sure if your configuration is the same as mine, but standing behind the mower, the oil filler/dipstick is located towards the lower rear of the crankcase(?) on the right hand side. ie, opposite side to the carby/air cleaner.
Hope that helps, Col.

This question makes me a little confused. Do you buy the Ryobi RLM46160S mower? (Ryobi 18' 160cc Self-propelled petrol mower) I bought that lawn mower 9 months ago, I followed what it says (I use unleaded 91 as fuel and 10W30 as engine oil). Does the seller gives you the quick start guide or any owner's manual? Mine it says put 350ml of SAE 10W30 engine oil and change when the mower ran 24 hours in total. Maybe contact your seller for more information.

I trust you've sorted it by now, but in case you haven't, it depends on how much 2-stroke fuel is "a little". A cupfull? 1/2 a tank? If its only a cupfull, you should get away with filling the tank with the correct fuel, and using it. It will blow some smoke, and you will need to clean the spark plug after you have used up the tankfull of fuel.

Can the self-propelled speed be reduced?

This was one of my questions to be explored on the first use of the RLM46160S, a couple of weeks ago. The instructions do not comment on this aspect, but it is important because some operators might be concerned if there is a fear that their own pace cannot keep up with the mower, or they need to operate the machine on sloping ground. At nearly 80, I had to consider both. My age does not prevent me climbing on the roof to clean gutters, though, and I am very safety conscious ! Our block is 5 acres, mainly bush, but heavy, tough grass does exist, so self propelled had to be the choice.

On this mower the self propelling mechanism is actually concealed as a gear train within the rear wheels. It is activated when you squeeze the space bar (my term) towards the handle. If the throttle is still in the full forward position after starting, and you push the bar forward it engages the drive and the mower moves off at a respectable speed ... a fast walk in effect. Easing off on the "bar" does not reduce the speed..... the bar position does not provide incremental speed changes ... it simply engages or disengages the drive.

However, by easing back on the throttle lever, the engine revolutions can be reduced to a degree, within its governed speed range. This does obviously reduce the mower speed down to a slower walk. It also means that the cutting blade speed is decreased so the cut is not as it could be if the engine was operating at full throttle. I did not find this a problem at all ! The mower designers would have had to make a choice on the optimum and safe maximum mower speed. As you get used to the mower, the best practice is to start it, then reduce the throttle, run it for a few minutes at reduced revolutions as a warm up period .... then engage the propulsion, hold the handle firmly and it will pull you along quite effortlessly. If you are approaching significantly high, dense grass, increase the throttle but pull back moderately on the handle until it enters the grass, which itself will slow down the mower as you would expect.

The type of grass and terrain will influence the mower performance, but the joy of not having to wrestle a rotary mower manually through the grass, or up slight inclines, was as I stated in my original report "a gift from God", lol.

I am very impressed with this Ryobi product.

What was the RRP for this model? I found it at my Bunnings for $260 but can't find anymore info

Got mine coupla weeks back for $349 on a special promotion at Bunnings in WA. They have promotions wee the product is a one only shipment and displayed at the front of the aisles rather than within them like regular items. The retail price is somewhere up around $500, so $260 sounds awful cheap whrn you consider that this mower is self propelled. Many rotary mowers are priced way above this and still have to be pushed !

Hi Jimmy
That's disappointing - my machine started automatically - no priming etc and has continued to start first pull every time.
I wouldn't hesitate in taking back to Bunnings.

Initially had the same problem, I think first time startup can be like this. I suspected flooding, so decided to remove the spark plug and check ... it was not particularly "wet". The spark plug removal by the way was way too difficult in terms of force needed, so be prepared.

Then, with no luck, I took the air cleaner cover off .... the air filter was fuel saturated ! Left the cover off, without the filter, closed the throttle, gave the rope a couple of pulls ... then, fully opened the throttle and on second pull it coughed into life. Ran it for a few minutes, then shut it down. Refitted the air cleaner cover and restarted withot any trouble, then or since. But it was a bit offputting, lol.
