Push Mowers Buying Guide
Our buying guide will explain which type of push mower would suit you most, how much you can expect to pay for one, and which features are worth looking out for.

Only used 10~12 times, fuel pipe line is split just after main extraction under fuel depo,
All "control wires" electrical contact, speed control are on the side and exposed to terrain while mowing, I usually get 4~5 years from the mowers I purchased. This one did not last a year
Purchased at Bunnings Warehouse for $375.00.

Fragile
I have had 2 of these mowers and I now believe the model is discontinued. The price I paid for this unit was $350 or thereabouts. Great price for a self propelled mower from a reputable company. I have a sloping block and a very poor back. Self propelled is my only choice or I have to pay to get it done. The mower is very easy to assemble and I put split washers in the handle clamps as I could see without them the clamps would vibrate loose. The first mower always started first pull as there is no provision for manual priming. It cut ver...Read more
y well as it should with 4 blades. The self propelling worked great. Never looked like stalling despite long wet grass. Although it had a narrow shute it never blocked and did a great job mulching. After 9 months the drive shaft let go so i got a replacement from Bunnings. Always great service. 9 months later with identical mower with identical performance drive shaft failed. Back it went and I bought a different brand. Lesson learned! Build quality looked great but under the skin inferior weak parts and no replacement part availability. The only consistentency with this mower is they work well, break easy and have a short life. Bunnings service is fantastic. Mower department informed me due to breakages this model was discontinued. My advice dont cheap out if you want a self propelled mower. 6 months time I will do review on new mower nearly double the price. Heres hoping!Purchased in December 2021 at Bunnings Warehouse for $350.00.

Absolute rubbish, dont waste your money!
Drive cable broke 2 weeks after warranty ended. Customer service from Ryobi was terrible but eventually figured part to order through Bunnings spares.
In trying to replace drive cable, it clearly becomes apparent that the design is poor and that the parts they use are cheap rubbish. Numerous over tightened bolts that have now stripped.
I'll have to throw out a two year old mower and buy another brand. I have quite a number of Ryobi tools and will never by another. Steer clear!
Purchased in November 2021 at Bunnings Warehouse.

Poor quality build
Fuel line split after less than 10 uses - this has happened for other reviewers on this site. Not easy to find a replacement part. Bloke in DIY store nearby said Chinese rubbish, good luck with finding a part! Ryobi website is useless - doesn't offer spare parts. Bunnings doesn't stock it.

Some good but too much bad.
This is the push version of Ryobi's RLM46160S self propelled mower. After some modifications, the mower does the job well. Starts first pull and handles all grass well. But, some issues. Firstly, as assembled, the mower bogs down on low height settings, This can be quickly rectified by removing the blade plate and reassembling using a washer to reset the plate at a slightly lower level than the surrounding safety shield. The grass catcher works well but the attachment to the mower body is flimsy and needs to be cleared of cut grass fairly frequ...Read more
ently. The cover flap on the air cleaner can be dislodged inadvertently with the slightest bump. Access to the spark plug, the carburettor and the fuel line a is unnecessarily difficult and the fuel line itself is complicated because it varies diameter at the fuel tank end. It's not just a matter of getting hold of a suitable length of tubing and re-attaching. After less than two years, the fuel line perished at the tank end and started to leak petrol onto the mower deck. Reading other reviews, I see this a common fault, which has not been rectified despite being first identified some years ago. Worse, Ryobi claims the fuel line is a "wearable part", like a spark plug or a mower blade, and is covered only by a 3 month warranty. 3 months for something as simple and crucial as a fuel line? Bunnings do not stock the replacement part but can order it in. Ryobi's customer service assistance was not impressive. I eventually bought a replacement from a mower shop after a 5 hour return trip from my home. All in all, despite good mowing performance, I would not buy a Ryobi mower again. Fundamental design shortcomings, unrealistic warranty restrictions and unsympathetic customer relations are too great to dismiss.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Traded my second warranty replacement in for another brand
Purchased Oct 2018 from Bunnings and self drive failed after three months (six uses). I needed a self-drive mower as suffering from cancer and weakened from treatment. Returned for new replacement in January 2022. Bugger is heavy and requires lots of assembly but had plenty of practise. Fuel line on replacement unit perished/cracked and started leaking in August 2022 after a dozen uses. Returned to Bunnings again and opted to replace with another self-drive mower. Impossible to source new fuel line for Ryobi model or have it installed. Throw-away item featuring design obsolescence...very dissatisfied.
Purchased in October 2021 at Bunnings Warehouse for $349.00.

This is an OK replacement mower
My 7 year old Pope, single blade slasher, push mower, failed during pre fire season grass cutting time. Researched a bit, but on arriving at Bunnings to look at options, I found this 46/160 self propelled mower on special promotion for $349. Bought it, took it home, carefully assembled the unit but had some trouble starting it after filling it with motor oil and fuel. Had some trouble removing the spark plug in order to check gap and actul spark .... the plug in fact looked used. Decreased the gap and refitted plug, still no start. Removed th...Read more
e air intake filter ... it was soaked with fuel. But with the filter off, four pulls got the machine started. The powered wheel drive works fine even in heavy grass and a sloping block. Very happy with the machine. I had a look at the old Pope mower, it is in good condition ........ and, funnily enough it also started. So now I have two. :-)). The propelled drive is great. I am very old and the push mower is hard to move around; this new machine is a gift from God. So pleased that my need and Bunnings promotion dates coincided. Thank you for a great mower, TonySimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Good and reliable
Good around the garden for small jobs. It's great to have it self propelled as we have a steep block. Lost a bold from the handle (obviously because of the vibration) after a very short time. It would be helpful if these had a lock, and/or supply the mower with a spare bolt if this is a chronic problem (like they give you spare buttons with a new shirt).

Taking my second one back
First new mower ever purchased, wanted self propelled as I have big yard & on a slope, went great first time I used it but wouldn’t turn off, had to manually turn off at the motor not from the handle, took it back, got a replacement, same problem, the replacement also isn’t as fast moving as the first. I have the same issue as others with the grass flying up in my face when I have to empty the catcher, the small chute clogs with grass if grass not completely dry, does not do well with longer gras sections.

Exactly what I hoped it would be!
We have a sloping River block with an extensive lawn. I was cautious purchasing a self propelled mower within the lower price range. After the first four months I have been super impressed with the Ryobi 160 cc 18” self propelled mower I purchased from Bunnings.
I have owned 3 mowers and have never had a mower start first time with little effort - awesome!
The large catcher sits comfortably on the mower and is easily emptied. The large fuel tank is also a bonus. The self propelled component works fantastically. It was easy to assemble with most of the unit pre-assembled. Hoping that the mower will provide a good decade of fortnightly mowing.

Ryobi 160cc 4 stroke self propelled
Bought from Bunnings, 1st time I used it the self propel would not engage. Have to sa that the moter was great, great grass cutting and mulching. Another problem is that the locking nuts on handles always loosen due to Vibration or poor design. No matter that I tightened them to breaking point they always loosened within 1 few minutes. Bunnings gave me a full refund...machine only 1 day in use.

Decent value
Decent mower for the price cuts well good power, self propell is a great feature but the mower sometimes bottoms out and wheels spin. It's a bit tricky to manoeuvre at times but overall I'm quite happy, the catcher with the half mesh might be a problem down the track but fine now. A deck wash feature would have been very helpful, the 4 yr warranty is fantastic when you register the product.

Hi, I've got the 46160p and I'm having trouble with it. It sat for a while, now it runs slow and won't cut grass to save it's life. Tried cleaning the carby which helped but still same problem. However if i leave the carby a bit loose, it runs at max throttle. Is this a gasket problem somewhere? It also sputters and spits out black smoke

Hello,
The self propelling action has stopped, I’m pretty sure the cable came out, how do I fix it?
