Used to be better
Been buying Searles potting mix for years, even back when they were just a small business in Caloundra and it was always the best that one could get. These days the plants don't do nearly as well and it holds way too much water. I find I need to add a lot of pertlite to it now and it seems to attract fungus gnats. And what's with the white mould in it when you first open it? That never used to happen.

Decided to try this potting mix for a change and was sad to see my plants my indoor plants not doing so well. I think the soil was too rich without much drainage. Most of the plants I repotted with this soil wilted. My friend experienced the same thing. We are both experienced in tropical plants. I changed the soil back to my usual brand and managed to revive some, thankfully.

I gave up buying the Osmocote potting mixes and decided to try this Searles brand. Excited to find the 60l from Bunnings Ermington. That was the last one on stock so I decided to buy it. I was so pleased that no gnats and other insects came out of the bag. Used the whole 60l bag but will definitely scout for more.

I recently topped all my indoor and plants on the balcony (7th floor) with is. About week later the house was filled with this little flying creatures and they were biting us every where. We noticed they were all flocking around the plant pots and crawling on the soil. Then I checked the left over mix in the bag and there you go. Now I lost all my beautiful indoor pots because I can't keep the inside any more.

An Exceptional Potting Mix.
I guess I am a bit of a mad gardener and over the years I have certainly tried a lot of potting mixes.
Being frugal I would always buy the cheaper varieties.Last year I noticed the quality of what I was buying had diminished.I potted over 100 different succulents etc..etc..thats a lot of potting mix…
I have a poor sense of smell and when I tore open each bag I would get a hit of a worrying smell,to the point it made me rethink what I was buying.
I noticed the plants were not doing so well, sure they were growing but they were not looking health
Questions & Answers
Hi - can I use Searles premium potting mix advanced for potting callistemons?
The white grubs in the pots is curl grub and the parent is a beetle who lays there eggs in organic matter be it a lawn, garden, pot or hanging basket. With all the wet weather over the past few years they often will head to higher ground to lay the eggs and that is why people are finding more of them. If they were in the potting mix you would have seen them when potting but if found later on in the pots or hanging baskets then that is nature.
Hi! Has anyone experienced grubs in the Searles Adv Potting Mix...weeks after repotting plants with Searles, the soil becomes gluggy and muddy like, and the white curl grubs are plentiful in the pots and destroying the roots of the plants. Any ideas?
Hi, I just bought and finished repotting my plants using the 65L Searles Advanced Potting mix and also the 25L Searles Platinum potting mix but didn’t see any gnats or curl grubs. My plants have actually been thriving. You may send a message to Searles Gatden Products on FB, they are quick to respond.
These grubs show up in the pots months after potting the plant…one of had 30 curl grubs in it and the same happened to my friend’s potted plants also. So these grubs are developing in the Searles mix over time and destroying our potted plants. Just wondering if anyone has had similar experience? Thanks
At the moment I am on my second 25 litre bag of Searles…I havent come across crawlies of any kind,I find my plants and cuttings thrive on it.
