Hi Joe, we appreciate your feedback. Yes what is called 'smoke spillage' coming back into your room when opening the door is a good indication of a partially blocked flue. So glad to hear that SmartBurn has cleared that up for you. Best wishes Glenn

Hi Liznway, Thanks for your interest in SmartBurn. A blackening of the glass is an indication of incomplete combustion which can be caused by a number of factors. Customer experience is that SmartBurn can assist to clean the glass, however if you would like to phone me at our office 08 9202 0700 I am very happy to talk through any advice that I may be able to offer. Good luck to you.
I'm still very disappointed with SMART BURN and definately won't buy another one and happy to tell people of my experience

Hi Adrian, Yes this will be the ingredients out of the SmartBurn. They will still work outside the tube, however the lifespan of the unit will be reduced. Please contact me at our office and will discuss how we can assist further. Email your details to [email protected] so that I can contact you. Thanks for your usage and support. Regards Glenn

Sorry Adrian, I never had anything than ash in my wood box. As I use the ash in gardening I am sure I would have noticed anything lumpy.

Have a jindara heater. No bricks no grate. Is your product useable?

1 answer
SmartBurn
Glenn F.SmartBurn

Hi Maree,
Thanks for your interest in SmartBurn. Yes the SmartBurn is very suitable for use in your heater without a grate or firebricks in the heater. What is important when using the SmartBurn is that the tube remains flat and level when hot and also that the holes in the ends of the tube do not get buried in ash. Place the SmartBurn in the front corner of your firebox on the same side as the hinge. Elevating on a firebrick can assist to keep the tube out of the ash bed. Not sure if your model has a level floor, just be aware of this. Call me at the office if you would like to discuss further. Best wishes. Glenn

For the 2nd yr in succession I have found a large irregular piece of metal in the firebox ashes shortly after installing the Smartburn. Could this possibly be some of the contents of the product? If not, what could it be?

Yes Ray, that is exactly what it will be. Usually occurs if the fire is burning too hot or the flame is too close to the product. Fortunately it doesn't hamper the effect of the unit in any way.

The metal ingot is rather large, say, 8 cm round but flat. How is this formed ?
Surely, if it comes from the product it must reduce the effective life of the unit.

Glenn F.SmartBurn

Hi Ray, thanks for sharing your observations. What has happened is the ingredients from your tube have leaked out. They will still work outside the canister, however the lifespan will be reduced. Please contact me at our office so I can help to understand how this might have happened in your case and sort you with a replacement unit. [email protected] I look forward to hearing from you. How long does it take to clean a chimney. Ours has just started to not draw
As it was during the start of winter. Will one of the has instant results or am I better to get it swept first then use the smartburn to stop the build up. Really like the reviews on the smartburn and I’m very interested in the product

Hello Brady,
Thanks for your interest in our product, and for your good question that we get asked often.
Provided that you can start your fire and get it up to temperature, in order to melt the SmartBurn ingredients, then it will clean your flue with noticeable results over the first two weeks. It is possible that you will hear material cracking off the inside of your flue on the first night. Having your flue inspected by a professional chimney sweep is always a good idea, who can check for corrosion and other structural issues as well. However, the SmartBurn will not only unblock a mostly blocked over flue, but maintain it clean for the approx three months lifespan of the device. SmartBurn is simple to use, safe and non corrosive.
Many thanks, Glenn

Cheers Glenn. I have a chimney sweep coming to have a look on Thursday and will put a smartburn in once I relight it again that day.

Hi do I need to place the smartburn on a specific heat brick? Or can I substitute with a rock?
Thanks

Glenn F.SmartBurn

Hi Ellen,
Thanks for your interest in SmartBurn and question. No please don't use a rock, as the supporting surface needs to be completely flat and level. The idea of placing your SmartBurn on a fire-proof brick is a recommendation, however not essential. Once heated the ingredients inside the SmartBurn tube melt and sit as a liquid inside the tube. Vapours off this liquid release via the holes in the ends and are the catalyst that improves the burning efficiency within your firebox. Due to the ingredients being liquid when hot, the tube must remain level at all times. Placing the SmartBurn higher up on something heat proof prevents the holes in the ends from being buried in ash and stopping the vapours from releasing. The firebrick also gives the tube a flat stable base that is higher up and further away from being disturbed by logs. Firebricks are available from any heating store that sells new wood heaters as a spare part, or via our web cart. Please also don't place a regular house or paving brick inside your wood heater. Buy the smallest firebrick that you can source.
Many thanks,
SmartBurn Australia

Hi Ellen,
I agree with Glenn.
We've placed our Smartburn directly on the floor of our fireplace with no support underneath.

I have a cast iron rectangular heater door one end and 90degree elbow for the flue at the other end, where is the best place to place the Smart Burn . Under the flue on brick or where ? Please tell

Hi Rob H
The best answer I can give is how I used it on my heater.
I have a slow combustion wood fire, Masport Verona, with a cast iron fire box.
It has a glass door, which when opened gives access to a steel panel (shelf) just inside the door.
I place the smart burn on this shelf between the door and the fire.
Hope this helps

Mine didn't make much difference to the glass, I've had it for about 4 weeks. How do I know when it is working and/or finished its life?

I cleaned the glass before putting it in and it kept the glass cleaner as before.
I think you can shake it to see if there is still something inside. After a few uses it will ‘rattle’ when shaken.
But otherwise, give the company a call: 08 9202 0700. They are very helpful.

We have had ours in place for roughly three months, used the fire every day during that period, and it seems to have just reached the end of its life as the smoke levels outside appear to be increasing.

Does anyone actually know what is in this thing, and please don't say "natural ingredients" - I mean specifically?

I have no idea, and the manufacturer isn't saying. All I can tell you is that the "substance" on the inside melted within a week and flowed outside of the shell despite me ensuring it was horizontal before every fire. It had a molten metal appearance and feel to it. I left it there in the hope it would still work, but it did nothing. Here is a hint, the retail packaging does not say to place it on a fire brick, but when you double check the instructions on line as I did, there it is. "Place on a fire brick". I'm sure you have one of those in your pantry! After two emails to the manufacturer, still no response. I think they don't want to know about the failures.

We're considering purchasing the SmartBurn product. Has your sole reviewer any additional results to share one year on? THX

We purchased one a few days ago, followed the instructions as to where it should be placed, have had the fire going now for 2 days and nothing has changed in the amount of blackness to the glass screen, fire still goes overnight and seems to use the same amount of wood. I was sceptical and felt that it was a waste of $40.00 (bunnings), but the other half wanted to try it. My thoughts are that it is a waste of $40.00 and she now agrees.

Thank you for your comments, most helpful. I think you may have good reason to request a refund under Aussie consumer law. Thx again.

I to have tried smart burn a couple of years ago, 3 of them in one winter (our heater runs 24 hours/day for winter months) and I believe that they didn't work. Couldn't see or feel any different at all. Best thing you can do is get the best wood you can get your hands onto.
