Good value STB.
Purchased this as a companion to streaming and no-Foxtel setup, purely to tune FTA channels and feed to amp instead of using painful TV switching and audio return. Considered this and Laser STB-6000 which is cheaper but ranged from alright to horrific reviews, par for the course with Laser gear. Strong has always been a good value proposition in DTV during my couple of decades in the game, so this one won out.
Good no-nonsense STB. Easy to set up. Menu and GUI is a little rough, but I've recently used a Panasonic DVR which cost 5x the mone...
Read morey and was worse by far. All channels tuned well, updated via USB OK as well, although it was hard to tell because it hangs on the splashscreen when updating and only does anything further when you pull the USB out after waiting a while. Recording - not sure yet, but I honestly can't remember the last time I recorded FTA anyway. Media player - again, unsure, but this box sits alongside consoles so it's not the first media player choice in my setup. The remote is decent, adds to Harmony 650 flawlessly as well. Fast channel changes, about as good in picture quality as any DVB-T tuner I've used. EPG is weak, like the majority of set top boxes, but channel info when scrolling through is fine. Overall, it's a ripper for $60-$70 bucks. I'd address the criticisms by saying that functions like recording and media playback aren't something you should be spending less than $100 and then relying on secondary functions to do anyway, kids. It's a good STB and that's more than you can say for plenty of units many times' the price. Update: I have had to recently get this replaced because of a bootloop issue which couldn't be resolved. I suspect a power surge might have been the culprit. Replacement by Betta Home Living was a breeze, no worries whatsoever.Purchased in October 2020 at Betta Home Living for $61.
Great, reliable product
We have installed hundreds of these boxes over the last 24 months and they have been incredibly reliable. No issues with dead boxes, which has been a major issue with other brands.
Purchased in January 2022 at Wagner for $60.

This is terrible regret buying
Received the strong set top box today and it would not accept my portable hard drive or USB stick it said unsupported device rang customer service they said to download the latest updates for it to accept the hard drive why should I have to do that it's a new machine it should have been able to accept the hard drive and the UBS stick secondly I know it's 2020 but I don't have a computer or a laptop to do that I have a tablet with the internet on it and a smartphone. My previous set top box was a laser 6000 that lasted 3 years when I got it I plugged in the portable hard drive no problem I should have brought another one of those but everyone said get this brand strong huge mistake.
Purchased in August 2020 for $73.

unreliable, not worth it
Had Strong set top boxes for years. Never had a problem until I bought this rubbish.
Totally unreliable, unit only records if and when it feels like it.
Was led to believe that my 2 month old unit would be replaced, but lied to.
Tried everything to sort out for 2 weeks after techo gave advice and was led to believe this would be replaced.
No No No.
When it was obvious there was a fault, was then told it would take 4 weeks to even check it and return and this was after many calls and emails. No replacement. Nothing.
Buy another brand. Strong has lost my vote after 10 years.
Purchased in October 2022 at Videopro for $59.

Had same problem so I emailed "[email protected]" they advised go to "Menu" select "preferences" and go to "Subtitle language" option and press the remote Vol- button about 5 times until OFF appears then press OK, exit menu then turn off STB and then reboot after about 10secs. Plus I also check if the "SUB" setting on the remote is also set to "OFF" each time I turn on the STB as it is very easy to accidently press it "ON" when using the remote for other functions such as "ASPECT" etc.

Hello. Can the Strong SRT5434 record Hd free to air TV that has MPEG 4 format? If yes, Can I play what I have recorded with HD quality? Cheers. Pierre
Do i have to record on a usb or does it have its own hdd to record to.
Can't watch a tv show whilst recording another channel. It says in the manual that you can record a show while you are out>>> (and watch it when you get back ) later? Not what I wanted, looks like I wasted my $65 not to mention my wifes input !!!! It switches over to the show being recorded when the recording starts. Is it faulty ?
The functionality you're after (recording one channel and then browsing through others) requires a twin-tuner unit. This unit has a single tuner, so if you're recording you'll be stuck watching that ...
Read morechannel. I'm not aware of a twin-tuner setup that can be had for anything like the SRT5434's asking price... not one that I'd have any faith in, anyway. Thanks Marshall, I believe twin tuners are for some reason not very available, suppose a smart tv might be the go
