Ant kill spray

I have small brown ants around the cat food bowls and the kitchen counter. I sprayed Swat surface spray four days ago and the ants haven't returned. I spray any new ant trails too, it's not a permanent solution but it's cheap at $3.69 at IGA . I bought the low irritant Swat surface spray. I've tried ant gel but it didn't attract the ants.
