Hey guys, I’m literally on my way to buy a 1998 Hiace 2.4l petrol and gas, roofracks,
Reverse camera, aircon is great, cosmetically beat up but drives absolutely fine. Rego runs out end of may amd there is a slow oil leak somewhere behind the front wheels. I’m buying for $3000 should I buy? Does this sound like a bargain? Please, thank you.

I have just bought a cheap van that will need a lot of work done to it. I am hoping to do this in my spare time in evenings and weekends. Is there a site or breakdown of all the parts, locations, what it looks like and how to replace it. I could easily google, but I need to know what some parts are first!
E.g. The front undercarriage, has a large, square, metal rigged part (i assume radiator cover?) that is pretty severely dented.

Those vans are bullet proof but wear and tear has to be taken into account. Differential, brakes, belts, clutch if manual, gearbox, but nothing internal should fail is the normal for these.

I have a 1997 Hiace 2.4 motor. The driver side windscreen washer nozzle has detached from its internal hose (which goes to the washer pump).because it was perished. How do you replace it with a new windscreen washer hose? Many thanks.

Maybe get a thicker oil to subdue the noise, otherwise see a mechanic.

HiAce H100.I (1989-1999)

Hi. Urgent response please.Thinking of buying 1989 toyota hiace supercustom ltd, auto, 2l petrol,-195000 on clock. Does have door light that stays on, hence flattening battery, high beam doesn't work, and that's all I know. Any suggestions whether good vehicle to buy and what costs to repair might be. Also, said it has a chain, not timing belt. Would this be right? Any help much appreciated. Woman on own, disabled, poor :/ they were asking 5600 but have now put it out to highest bid cos not selling. I thought 2800 initially but now I'm wondering if less? (In case if repairs). Thank u. Need response asap. (I like the van and is good sitting height for injuries, an issue I've found looking at other vans.

Hello. I don't know about the petrol engines as I have a diesel engine in my Toyota. Needless to say anything over 150000 on the clock definitely requires an inspection by an independent mechanic first for appraisal. This as part of a non binding purchase agreement before offering a price. If the sellers won't let you DON'T BUY IT! If however they do and the mechanic lays out the pro and cons or straight out says don't buy it, listen to him/her. If any problems that can be fixed let them (the independent mechanic) give an estimate so to tell the seller if you want to bargain the price to absorb the repair cost. Check registration and any history of the vehicle but the later is difficult. Timing chain or belt times before changing vary from engine to engine so ask the independent mechanic if the vehicle needs it checked. Hope I helped.

Thanks david. But I missed out. Someone snapped it up. Now I'm in remorse :( was so clean. Anyhow, I know for next time. Though, they said chains don't ever need replacing? If nothing else, I've signed up here for future ventures and it works. My first foray into online discussions. Cheers!

Would a deisel 5 speed 1995 be slow on power on the highway?Could it stay on the speed limit ok?

Rule of thumb .. Turbo Diesel .. no problem, non Turbo slow !!

David the sparky

Hello Vikisa. The old non turbo diesel has very bad acceleration even with no load on. But once the van is up to speed on flat ground it can do 110 km per hour comfortably, even fully loaded with high air drag extension and step ladders on the roof rack. Sits on or just above 3000 RPM which is a little noisy but fine in 5th gear (overdrive as some call it). On hills from a flat start it can be hard to get out of second gear and they struggle to get up in speed to go to third gear. So be patient as its not a speedy sedan. On the good side they never overheat (using a genuine Toyota thermostat on the radiator) and can go all day even in a heatwave with the air conditioner on full blast. Just get the timing belt changed/looked at when or before you buy one. Usually the water pump is worn out/rusty and so the timing belt support base needs changing too as they corrode thanks to the water pump rubbing away metal. $900.00 is the base plate and the belt and pulley kit is $280.00 plus fitting. Get the radiator checked too because the have to take it out anyway to get to the timing belt. Don't let them use steel putty on the base plate corrosion as its a recipe for disaster for the timing belt latter. $10000.00 FOR A NEW ENGINE INSTALLED IF THE BELT LETS GO SO ITS WORTH IT. So spending the $1900.00 will give you a bullet proof engine and change the timing belt every 80000 which cost $700.00, service regularly and check the oil once a fortnight when using the van hard. Hope I helped you out.

I currently have a Toyota Hiace 1998 4WD and want to make curtains for it. I am not near the van currently to check measurements and can not find the dimensions for the back door window anywhere online. Is anyone able to give me some rough estimations on the window dimensions for my Hiace? I have worked out the side windows, it is just the back door window that I am having trouble working out. Thanks!

Hi Jordon,
I can't give you the measurements, but for a Hyundai van I have I bought café type curtains from Spotlight in WA, the type that have rod pockets in them, an upper (shorter) and lower section (longer) and some spring stretch wire to use instead of rods, and some eyelets to screw into the body of the van and hooks for same to screw into the wire. All items sold by Spotlight. I did across the front behind the front seats, side windows and across the rear (not on the lift up door). Worked for me and was a lot cheaper than making them or buying others. Just a thought.

have a 1997 super custom ltd. has a partly blocked fuel tank filter? is there an easy way of changing it? or whats the best way to go about it. is there an chemical that i can put in tank? have always add diesel additive.

I'm afraid there's no quick solution. Unless your fuel filter is outside the tank unlike newer Hiace models which have the fuel filter inside the tank. Then you have to take the fuel tank out and replace the filter.
