Prado buyers beware. They are not what they used to be.
In 2016 I handed over the keys on my beloved 120 Prado for a new Prado 150. My 120 had served me faultlessly for 13 years and I was expecting the same from the new one. I use this vehicle to tow a horse float and general running around. I found very quickly that the gearbox was nothing short of terrible. Constantly hunts for gears. Touching the brakes going downhill and the vehicle drops down 2 - 3 gears enough to cause bruising on my collarbone from the seat belt. It then holds this gear to the very bottom, sometimes getting up to a scre...Read more
aming 4000rvs before letting go violently slamming me back in my seat. Toyota's response was "it is working as it should". While towing and crawling up to a set of lights the car started to shake violently (think earthquake) - Toyota could not find anything wrong. I constantly hear the sound of a chain being dragged along under the car - Toyota cannot find anything wrong. My warrantly was running out in two months. I took it in to get the brakes checked because they were grabbing badly. Toyota's response "the brakes are working perfectly". I lost faith in my car (I am a 66 year old woman on my own) I lost faith in Toyota. I have traded the Prado in on another make.Purchased in May 2021 for A$61,000.00.

Buyer Beware!!!!
Beware of Euro IV Compliant d4d diesel engined toyota prado... This engine is prone to piston fractures 100-150,000km and injector failure 120-140,000km..reference www.AustralianCar.Reviews.com .au
Do a google search "Prado d4d engine problems" before purchase...U have been warned!
In my case engine lasted 141,000 from new..always serviced by selling toyota dealership..so no excuse for toyota. I took toyota to fair trading for action and extracted some compensation never accept their standard out of warranty excuse...good luck!
Purchased in October 2021 at Cooma Toyota.

Great reliable car. Economical for its size.
My Prado is 7-ish years old. Runs well, no major issues. It’s a bit hard to park, due to its size. However I find it very economical to run, being a diesel. It’s also very roomy inside. I have slept in the back seat a few times, because it’s so big.

Great car. Disaster for towing.
Traded 2014 3ltr 5 speed auto which I loved for new 2.8.
new model has 6 speed auto which I found all wrong for towing.
At 90 to 95 km per hr 6th gear useless, battling to hold 5th and 4th too low.
Unlike old model I found new gearbox doesn’t work well in manual mode and has a mind of its own.
Result is gearbox wanders between 4th and 5th all day.
Engine and gearbox Just not set up for towing at this speed.
I tow a 2.5 ton van.
Great vehicle in all respects but not for towing u.

Exactly the car I needed
My wife and I both love our Prado. It's a really smooth ride both in suburbia and off road. The turning circle and handling are both amazing and I feel safer driving it off road than I have in almost all other cars I've driven. We have the MY14 model with the touch screen dash and it connects easily with our phones via bluetooth, and allows seamless streaming of music. As with most Toyota's, the car is very reliable and economical (costs us less than our previous little 4WD). If your after a good 4WD with some bells and whistles, I highly recommmend the Prado.

Prado 150 a "Landcruiser" ??
Also owning an 80 Series I am tainted, a very tough durable product. Needing to replace my work car a Holden Captiva Diesel Manual(Car allowance)I hit on the Prado 150 as no more Captiva manuals are being brought into Australia.
My take on the 150, personal view, each to their own:
Engine not a patch on the Captiva diesel rocket anything under 2000rpm vibrates and lugs. Off Idle torque OK. Interior way too plush for a GX base model marks and stains easy. Plastics very soft scratches just from wiping dust off. Suspension has the wallows - lim...Read more

Hi, I am planning to buy a used 2010 Toyota Prado GX with the Diesel engine. I read the engine has plenty of problems. Will it be better to look for the petrol option? Thanks

I have a 2011 150 petrol and agree that the Plastics mark easily, My rear seats vibrate, They require 12 Volt outlets in the rear, Can't find rocker or toggle switches to fit in knockouts. Would be good if toyota could fix in newer models
