Hello everyone, I purchased GXL Prado in April 2017. Right from that time, I noticed a vibration while I was stopping the vehicle at the traffic lights. It vibrates only in the 'Drive' mode and does not do so in Neutral, Parking and Reverse gears. The engine RPM drops around 625 to 650 mark when it vibrates.
I called Toyota Australia immediately. They advised me to take it to the dealer. I took the vehicle to the dealer. I think they plugged their computer in and said there is nothing wrong with the vehicle and it's just the Diesel engine. A...Read more
s I am an Engineer, I asked them what is the specification on the Idle RPM. They did not seem to have idea about that. One of the mechanic told me that it should be around 700. Later some other mechanic said, it could be 650. They sent me home saying that it does vibrate because its Diesel engine. I was quite frustrated as the brand new car was not doing the right thing. Hence, I decided to call Toyota Australia again. They sent me back to the dealer again. I was on ad hoc for 3 to 4 times. At the end, I decided to live with it. Recently, they did the first service. A lady called me from dealer asking whether I had any problems, I reported that this vehicle still has that vibration. She asked me to take the vehicle back to the dealer and it was same story again. Recently, I also noticed few kicks while I had air conditioning on and waiting at the traffic light. The problem is very intermittent. With my past experience with Toyota, I am not sure whether I will report this at this stage. I may need to go through same process again which will waste a lot of my time.Similar opinion? Not a happy family
The interior would be the only satisfying component of the vehicle. We have had toyotas for many years only for the advertising. After owning the last prado for less than 12 months we had to trade, very disappointing the price keeps going up unfortunately improvements if any are a letdown, the spare wheel on the back door I would not call a feature put it underneath the vehicle where it belongs. After 40 000 ks when you need to replace the tyres change the spare while you're at it and get new brake pads at the same time. Take my advice and look at other dealerships much better and improved vehicles around.

Great heavy towing family vacation vecile
I enjoy driving the Prado on long distance (however the down hill override in the motor is very worrying as Toyota has told me this is normal)
I love the room in the front of the vehicle but believe the middle requires more room especially when you have adults or a baby seat in there
to date it has been very reliable car and the running cost compare to my last vehicle so i am happy with that

A car that beeps
This is a great car to drive and use for just about anything, except the BEEPS. Open the door it beeps, step out with the key in your pocket it screams. There are other beeps too many to mention and you can not turn them off. Oh and the maps in the navigation system are rubbish.

Love this car!
Have only had the car for just on 2 weeks. The car is everything I have expected it to be and more. Very comfortable to drive and quite good on fuel for it's size. Only downside is the towing capacity but I knew that before I purchased it. very comfortable to drive and quiet inside considering it is a diesel.

2016 GXL Toyota Prado 2.8GDI
Purchased in February 2016 my 34,000km 2.8GDI 6 speed (diesel) Prado may look the same as the 3.0 litre 5 speed variant but in truth the dynamics are completely different due to the updated engine and gearbox.
The ride is very quite around town if you dont constantly putt the engine under heavy load and exceptionallly quite on the highway. Diesel rattle is negligible and on occasions I am reminded I am driving a diesel if accelerating hard from a standing start.
Road noise is minimal on the factory tires and damping on rough surfaces is s...Read more
uperb. Visibility is is spot on for all occupants and the rear row offers a decent level of comfort and head room for adults. The shorter drivers in our household find the seat and steering wheel adjustments useful as the scope for driver positioning is welcome. Full electric seat adjustment would be useful for multiple drivers but having said that if you need more gadgets buy higher up the range. Handling is you should expect for a large genuine off road car and does lean if you push it into a bend. You have to bear in mind that you won't pull quickly unless you are emergency braking and then you will be surprised at how effective the brakes are (not recommended). The cars off road ability has been tested and exceeded my ability as it will most buyers of a genuine 4X4.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

First and last Prado
I've had nothing but trouble with this vehicle, steering/cabin vibration at above 90km from new, Toyota has tried to fix it for the past months, balancing the tyres, rotating each wheel, supposedly reversing the driveshaft, done due to a technical bulletin issued by Toyota in March 2016 for the new 2.8L. A steering damper was fitted as a last resort as these hide many sins. Still not fixed and seems I'm not alone. Now I am getting dash and engine bay rattles, most likely due to the constant vibration.
Not something you want to go though with a new car.
This is my first and last Prado.

4th Prado in a row - that has to say something!
Bought my 4th Prado GXL 4 months ago. Love it as much as my previous 3. The only reason for the new one was because while we can afford it we decided to upgrade every 3 to 4 years. Apart from being a brilliant car to drive they also hold their value really well, so the $ repayment figure hasn't really altered in 11 years. This has been a big factor given that the Prado is not exactly a cheap SUV to buy.

ter version which was great carting 7 kids (mine and neigbours) around between school and after school activities. The 7 seater is not quite so roomy as you can't put an older child or adult in the 2nd rear set of seats. My new one is also my first diesel, and apart from a slightly slower uptake at lights there is not much notable difference in performance (from my point of view anyway - I'm sure a car nut would disagree :). ) It is extremely quiet on the road and really comfortable. It has excellent visibility all round. All up it is a great safe comfortable family car that you really can't go past.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Mach 2Sydney
Solid and reliable
Have had 1 Falcon, 2 commodores and 3 BMWs, the Australian cars have got better and the BMW got worse,
got fed up with high cost of service and complex electronics.
Also driving in Sydney these days you can't go over 60 KMH due to traffic or being booked by speed camera every 5 km!
Looked at Audi Q 5, beautiful but had oil burning motor so no go.

Ohh what a feeling
Just brought a 2015 GXL for the family. By far the best car I've own or driven.
It's extremely good on diesel. Has a good engine matted with a 6 speed auto. Very roomy for long drives. Heaps of fun off road too. Only downside is the lack of dash storage space.

Spectaculat Vehicle!
I purchased my Prado new 10 months ago and 20000km later, i absolutely love it. Drives great, extremely comfortable and plenty of room.
There is nothing i dislike about the interior but if i were to nit-pick, the screen could be bigger.
It is extremely reliable and as cheap to run as you make it. If you floor it at every opportunity it will not be economical but if you take it easy, then it is very economical and given it has a 150L tank, fills can be few and far between.
I very highly recommend the Prado.

O what A feeling.
Well we thought we might go out and splurge and buy a Toyota Prado, they're not cheap, right at the end of our budget . We could of bought a much cheaper four-wheel drive and at the time the decision was hard. But we decided it was the one for us so we bit the bullet and purchased the car and wow what a 4x4. They really do look great, aggressive but still stylish. We added a ARB bullbar to the front which topped it off, so I've got the next year to deck it out completely, Winch, Spotlights, C B, Lift kit or do I just leave it as it is.
Either way I'm happy...

Very refined engine and comfortable!
My vehicle is just coming up to 20,000kms and I am extremely impressed. The general engine refinement and automatic are excellent. One detractor is fuel economy but it udon par with the competition in this class. All round great vehicle and I have not looked back after owning a Patrol.

Great 4WD Awesome Family Car
We purchased our Prado D4D 2.8L in late 2015, my wife and I love this car. I have had an 80 series and a 100 series in the past and feel the Prado 150 lives up to Toyota's off road reputation. The vehicle has run well great fuel economy around the city and has been a great family car. We have two small children so have two car seats in the back plenty of room and plenty of space in the rear for a pram and all the other stuff needed to lug around with small children. We regularly take the vehicle off road and that's where it performs well, peop...Read more
le say it doesn't handle well on the road well yeah it's a 4wd drive if you want a smooth ride and more power for on road use buy a sedan. We regularly go to Fraser Island, the Prado loves it eats up the soft sand, fuel consumption off road is great handling in the soft sand is great. Have been to a few 4wd tracks in the South East QLD hinterland and again the 150 Prado performs seamlessly. If your after a good 4wd to use around town and have some great family adventures in off road I would highly recommend the 150 Series D4D Prado. Just have to remember it's a 4wd so if your after something a little more combatable for general around town use may be should consider something else, you have to look at what purpose you want a 4wd for.Similar opinion? Fuel usage
No sure why others are getting such poor fuel economy. Our first 4000kms and its averaging 9.7l. We also have one in our fleet at at 10000kms it's on 9.5l. Our driving is a mixture. The suspension is a bit floaty but you can't beat it as a tourer. Very quiet and comfortable.
November 6th 2016 Update: Update on fuel economy
Just had the 10,000km service on our personal 2016 Prado GXL. Fuel usage has averaged 9.4l per 100kms. Very happy considering the last 5000kms has mainly been town work, running the kids around. My wife doesn't drive fo...Read more
r economy either. The work Prado has used 9.6 over the first 18,000kms. It does have a bull bar and a lot of the driving is at 110 plus kph.as a big real fwd you couldn't complain. January 27th 2017 Update: 2016 Prado 2.8 update Brought a July 2016 Prado GXL Auto. At the 10,000km service it had averaged 9.6l per 100kms. 600kms towing a 2t boat but the rest highway/ dirt and kids drop off/ around town. One of the most comfortable tourer 4x4s around as we do the 1400km round trip to Brisbane every few months. Suspension is floaty, you need to plan if you are overtaking a road train at 110kms but pickup in the 60-100kph is good. 2nd row seats are some of the best for space (6 foot kids). Bluetooth speaker is crap. I'm happy to spend $1600 on ARB suspension to suit my needs as I know the prado will last and when I come to sell, I'll get a good price since I live out bush where everyone drives a Toyota. Living in Arnhem land most my life driving most 4x4's, I went back to a Toyota as my personal vehicle as they are the only ones that didn't end up rattling apart.3 comments
30,000km service. No issues at all. Now with steel bullbar and spotties. Reset fuel to see what difference it makes. 500km trip out west at 100kph got down to 8l's per 100kms. Reset and now 2,000kms around town only, sitting at 10.
40,000km service done ($220). No issues. Now has a steel bullbar and spotties. Averaging 9.8 with only one long run (1800kms with camper trailer). Tows our 1.5 tonne bowrider boat with no issues (400k... Read more

Happy with 2.8 Prado
Unlike some reviewers I am happy with the 2.8 Prado performance (despite coming from a V6 Kluger and also having rented a BMW 640d recently). It may be the case that market expectations have changed. I agree that the gearbox moves around 4/5/6 rather too much around town, but you can easily lock it to only 1-4 if required. Fuel usage is around 9/100, even in the city. Given that mine is not even run in, it should improve further.
It is comfortable, exceptionally well built and has sensible equipment levels for the price. I have only done ...Read more

2016 Prado underpowered
What a slow POS! I loved this car until I drove it on the highway. Absolutely no power, constantly putting my foot down to access the torque but ruining the fuel economy in the process.Transmission isn't the best either, experiencing flaring when cold between 3rd and 4th gear. Drove a NT (2011) Diesel Pajero for 5 years and whilst it wasn't as refined as the Toyota, the engine has plenty of power and still reasonable fuel economy. Seriously disappointed...

rubbish
This model is underpowered and the auto is a shambles when towing . It hunts between 5th & 4th gear even on a flat road and if in a head wind it is constantly in 4th . The claimed fuel economy is impossible to achieve . This is the third Prado i have owned and am bitterly disappointed.
Although my dealer has done everything to solve the problems it has all been in vain. The claim of 8 litres per 100 klms is dream land stuff for this car. If that were correct, towing I would expect 14-16 tops. My last trip of 8,000 kms my average was 21.8 per 100klms
Purchased in November 2021.

Guy Simasked
Purchased this vehicle for caravaning. Went from Coff's Harbour to Glenn Inness and got about 15litres/per 100 kilometres. Which we thought was great. We inadvertently left the caravan plugged in and it completely drained the battery. Since then the economy has been horrible, about 28l/100kls at reduced speed ie 80 kph.
Did the flat battery effect on board computers to drastically reduce fuel economy or is there another issue?
