Best car we ever owned
Most reliable car we ever owned. In 20 + years and over 200 000 kms we replaced 3 batteries, 3 sets of tyre, set of brakes, two timing belts and few globes, apart from regular service that was the only cost. Easy to park, cheat to run....... shame they do not make them any more.

Awesome Car! Just brilliant! So much fun! :)
I have had 2 Starlets, an auto 1999 and manual 1998, both 3 door Life models. All I can really say is they are quite simply, for me, probably the best fun car you can buy. I part traded the auto in for another car and deeply regretted it, always wanted another and got one a few years later and still proudly have it. Has never let me down and gets me to work and back daily with no problems whatsoever. For me, it just wants to run and run and run. The engine is a 1.3 and with no real body weight to the car, I find it very quick. No, obviously no...Read more
t as quick as many other cars but I have surprised a few people with its speediness. I have moved house using this car 3 times and was amazed what you can fit inside it. Very cheap to run and great fun to drive. Will be getting a new car any day now but am definitely keeping this as a cheap little runaround. Love these cars. If you find one for sale, would highly recommend you buy it before someone else does.

Best Car Ever
A simple car with loads of life.
I brought mine secondhand and as my first car I didn't have anything to compare it to. But after owning a few cars, I still always end up going back to the Starlet. It's build quality is just brilliant. It's kind of one of those cars that looks crap and drives slow, but is so well made it's worth it. I put it through hell and back when I first got it and not a thing broke. It still just drove along without a sound. It's a simple, underpowered, 4 cylinder engine. The interior is nothing special, but it works. He...Read more

BEST car
Excellent, beautiful small car to drive, great fuel economy, fun to drive, cheap to service, never had an issue!
Some fun modfications I did: catback exhaust system with Redback sports muffler, K&N air panel filter, 195/50/15 Michelin sport tyres and rims, DBA slotted front brake discs, Eibach lowered springs & Koni yellow sport shocks, Phillips Diamond headlight globes, 35% window tint, Clarion stereo and rear 6x9 3 way Rockford Fosgate speakers, Sentry brand alarm & keyless entry.
Apart from regular maintenance such as oil change, some...Read more
things I have found is: if idle ever gets a bit rough clean the body throttle, if still persists clean the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. If your door handle breaks get an original one from Toyota. Dont forget timing belt change every 100,000 kms or 7.5 years. Dont forget to change differential oil, brake fluid, coolant and grease rear wheel bearings every 2 years. Car feels planted on road with a real steering feel which a lot of new cars these days have lost. Overall good quality, tough mechanically, quality interior, zippy and body exterior is open to personalised styling. I have nothing bad to say about this car, it gives me joy and hope to have it far into the future.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

By far the all round best car I have ever owned
GLS model bought new in 1998. It has never let me down in 17 years of motoring, does not rust, handling is joy, interior is beautiful, boot is large for such a small car. I has never failed to start, even in the severest weather. True, it is not quick, but it is quick enough for anyone except a boy racer. Economy is great for cars of the time. All Toyota cars are good, but If you see a good Starlet, buy it.

1997 Starlet
I bought one of these cars new in 1997, owned it for 10 years and clocked up over 200,000 km without any major problems.
Considering I'm a big guy (127 kg and 6 ft 5in), such a purchase would probably surprise some, but I have now regrets. The Starlet was a great little car for what I needed ( I was still single at that stage) at that point in time. Mine was very fuel efficient and only had the usual maintenance issues such as regular servicing, new tyres (after 4 years) to deal with.
I have since married, had kids etc and moved on to a more family-friendly car, but would recommend the Starlet to any first car buyer.
Reliable, inexpensive to run.
Small boot space

Love it!
I own a 1999 2 door Life, and I can proudly say I own a great car! Although it's a bit small, it gets me to where I need to go and great on petrol, even with auto gearbox. Air con blows cold, but doesn't have power steering; the car is still easy enough to steer. The only drawback is back seat passengers get no leg room, especially on the driver's side (not so much an issue for me since I don't have anyone in the back :P)
Good on petrol, easy to drive and park even without power steering
No leg room for back seat passengers

Reliable
Very good reliable little car. Ours only had a 4 speed box. Could definately have done with another gear. Apart from that it went great. For someone as tall as me 6 foot five the steering wheel obscured the speedo but for most people this would not be a problem.
Economical, reliable
Needs a five speed gearbox

Best car I have ever brought!
Brought our starlet in 2000, one previous owner and a 1998 model. It has never broken down on us and now has 450 000 Kms on the clock and our mechanic says it is fit to go for another 500 000! We service it regularly and it has rewarded us in return. Cheap on fuel as well. A fabulous car for day to day running around.

Good
This has been an amazing car from new and the engine has never let me down. The first battery lasted and lasted despite the car not being used when I was away for 6 weeks. I love how easy it is to park and the good overall vision.
Cheap to run, great air con, reliable, easy parling with the power steering, good vision. First battery lasted 8 years and was not replaced because it had died rather "just in case".
dark metallic paint faded,

Good first car
This was my very first car I ever had. It was good for a P-Plater, especially as it was a deterrent for carrying around more than one other person (I had the two door model). The air-conditioning as with all Toyotas was great and the boot space was very generous. My version didn't have power-steering which was a big of a bummer but it did prevent me from driving like other young people my age at the time (like they are racing each other 24/7).
The colour choices were great, I had a baby blue type colour, but I understand that this model has...Read more

Very reliable ...Mine refuses to die!
I've had my '96 Group X Starlet for about 5 years (clocked about 200,000kms+), prior to that my sister had it since it was brand new. And it just won't die!! I'd like to get a new car, but won't until this is on it's deathbed - and I just can't see that happening for a long time yet. I think it's only ever had one breakdown in it's life so far. When it was about 12yrs old during the middle of a north QLD summer, with the air con on full and doing long highway trips, the engine (carburetor) over heated. Didn't take long to repair, and I don't re...Read more
member it being too costly either. It gets driven frequently and treated like a rally car - and it starts and performs every time. The lack of power steering hasn't bothered me at all (if anything I think of it as a workout for my arms!). It's always been easy to park - AND it can fit in parks that even some other 3-door cars can't. Very convenient. I would definitely recommend this little beast for beginner drivers! Economical, reliable, easy to park No power steering1 comment

Good
Overall, this has been a fantastic car. I'm still hanging on to it so that has to say something. A full tank of petrol will last me about 500km and best of all it seems to have a very large reserve tank for those of us who tend to let their car go far below empty.
I've had my car since 1998 and despite everything I've done to it it's still going strong. It's had three kids go through L and P plates on it, had one car accident, gone serious 4 wheel driving in the outback (though I wouldn't recommend this) and still hasn't broken down once. Very ...Read more

A very reliable car if you take good care of it. It needs regular servicing to keep it happy. Driving everyday to work, winter and summer. It has not complained a single time. It just keep you going.
The car gets really cramped with 3 or more passengers.
Overall, I'm very happy with this car and would keep it for many years.
Very fuel efficient, even in bad traffic. Gets me from A to B without trouble.
Cheaper version has no power steering, car feels heavy in low speed. No legroom in the back.

I bought my 1998 3-door starlet in 2005 and have never had any problems with it. It's extremely reliable. It's got a metalic baby blue colour which makes it still look like a new car. It's very quick and easy to start, to turn around. I bought this hatchback as the second family car as sometimes we need to move furniture etc and it's amazing how much you can put in this car. We could easily put a single bed and mattress in it. We've also put huge filing cabinet and a (dismantled) bookcase and some other small furniture in it. The guy who helped...Read more
us to put in these stuff had very shocked look on his face. You just fold flat the back seat and it's like a small truck! I also bought it as a hatchback because I want easy parking. It's compact so it's always easy for me to park in very small spaces where other cars can't park! I just love this little car. I'd rather sell our family sedan which we've owned since new, than selling this little gem if we have to upgrade! Very reliable, never had any problems for the 5 years that I've owned it, still looks very new, very light to manuvure, huge capacity, air con works very quickly, electronic mirror adjustment, compact, everything.Similar opinion? Good
This is a very good small car to own. I use it as my second car to get around the city. It is amazing on petrol. What surprised me was it's very powerful compares to other small cars in the same category. Driving on highway is pretty good, a little bit noisy but it's not too bad. If you are looking for a reliable small car to get around the city for everyday driving, this is a great choice.
Excellent small car to get around. Compact yet powerful. Cheap on fuel. Light and Fast. Toyota reliability.
3 door hatch is a bit small.

I bought this car initially for the low cost ($14000), as I had previously owned a second hand car and had nothing but trouble with it. So the Starlet was my first new car which I intended to keep it for 5 years and then buy something bigger. 11 years later, I am as happy with it now as I was then. It just hasn't let me down and I have not had to spend lots of money on it (apart from general things like new tyres and, just recently, a new battery). This is a great first car for anyone or second car for a family.
It's reliability. I have owned my Starlet since 1998 and it is still going strong.

I have this car since 1997 from new, given to my son two years ago. So far this little car never fails us. It has enough power to carry five adults (at a slower speed). But with one person on the driver seat, it power is more than enough.
Fuel economy is execellent, reliable and practical. Get us from A to B without hassel.
The car that I have does not have power steering, it is a bit heavy in parking.
