Sorry, Bob, I am no car expert. All I can say is that I still have a Starlet that is now 20 years old and have never experienced a problem with the door handles.

Buy the original door handles from Toyota. The afternarket handles will break.

Hello, I own a Yaris 2015 manual Ascent four door vehicle with 16,000 kms on the clock. I haven't started my car up in 10 days. Yesterday I attempted to start the engine to find the car wouldn't' start. I tried a few times then the car finally started. Car was in neutral foot on brake and clutch and no lights were left on for a long period of time.

What could be the potential causes????

Hi, I have a 1999 Starlet and a problem has just started. About five minutes of going down the road, putting your foot down the engine does not seem to rev up, seems to go flat. Push the peddle down a couple of time it starts to rev again. Could this be the HT leads . I have replaced the spark plugs about two months ago . Or does it just need a good turne up?

Unfortunately, according to Toyota, use of E10 in Starlets is not recommended (http://www.toyota.com.au/toyota/faqs/fuel-types)

I am afraid I don't know - I am not an auto engineer. However, I would assume that it would be possible if you could get the parts. It would be expensive.

Change the power steering fluid with a good oil like Penrite and extra inflate the tyres. Not worth the cost to add power steering, maybe consider buying one that already has ir.

Bit of a pain this! Just texted my question as well as heaping bouquets on the 1997 Starlet Life. It's disappeared- the text, not the car :)
Trying again with just the question this time. Is it possible to convert to power steering and if so, approx how much would it cost?

It's probably better to ask the Toyota Australia workshop that question to see if you could get a answer to that question or you could try a braking and or steering specialist though I don't think it would be too cheap

Thanks Brian. Did ask the local Toyota dealership. It would be possible but not by Toyota - no parts for that model (understandably). Now have mechanic on the lookout for parts.
Thanks again

Yes, it does. However, these cars are all quite old now and it is never a good thing to let the fuel tank get low on an old car because all kinds of debris accumulates in the bottom of the tank. I run my Starlet for 250 miles or so and then refill the tank so it never gets below a quarter full. I advise you to do the same.

In my whole 2 years in owning my 1997 starlet I have never seen the fuel light cone on ? Do they have a fuel light ?

I far as I can recall, yes. It obviously indicates that the fuel tank is close to empty. In my years of owning a Starlet, I only saw mine come on once (thank goodness), so I pulled in at the nearest gas station.

YourFace1996
YourFace1996

Yeah they do, but mine regularly runs below empty before I fill it up (500km+) and haven't seen it yet :3

We have kept our 1997 Starlett for our L plated teenager which, like everyone says, is very reliable and great for a new driver. Has anyone purchased car seat covers for this model and if so can you advise the seller?

I doubt a genuine item would still be available but check with a dealer. Otherwise you would probably have to go for a more general fit item from Supercheap or similar.

The original Toyota replacements most likely are long out of production. Having said that simply try oneof the larger auto accessories store like Auto 1 or Supercheap Auto because they'll have a large range of generic car seat covers.

I bought Angry Birds seat covers for my front seats :P
They're a bit too big for the seats, but they still look ok

I've done some research, and from what I can see they are quite rare. People have suggested to try eBay, but even then there's not much regarding workshop and servicing manuals... Sorry about that

I'm asking the obvious, but have you simply used google? Try as many variations of 'Starlet users manual' etc as you can.

Wow it's been real good reading about everyone's first experience with little starlet! It is my very first car too. Bought it second hand off gum tree. I've only had it 2days now. Seriously feels like a rally car. I'm not too happy about the no power steering. Does anyone know if I can put power steering on it?Also it came with no aircon....can I get that fitted in too or not?

From what I know, power steering for a Starlet was a costly extra when new; mine did not come with it either (although the car is so small and light it doesn't really need it most of the time) but mine does have air-conditioning, so that could be possible?

$110 labour and $88 for bearings. This is for both rear wheels.

We're about to buy one of these, but I've got a quick question. When we looked at it, it had been driven about 60kms with the air con on full (we're in Australia where it's about 24 degrees) all the way. Once parked I noticed water dripping from the back of the engine bay, It was not coming from the radiator and the water was clear. I was told this is condesation from the aircon. There was quite a lot of water dripping though, but the dripping slowed down quite quickly after the car was parked and the aircon switched off. Is it the aircon? Hope someone can help. Thank you.

That is quite normal for the air conditioner to drip condensed water and in all of the 14. Years I had my Starlet and driving through the hit summer with temperatures over 40C, I had never had a problem with the air conditioner and I too noticed the water condensation.

K. Sandy

Clear water is normal.
