Reliable fast for a dc and economical
What can I say, have went to Uluru and back towing a big van and was surprised how good on fuel it was. Goes great offroad. Only problem I've had is a rear main leak but the dealer fixed it straight away. Serviced every 15k and drive to work in it every day.

Good to drive longevity question
300,000 kms second motor, the first motor was fixed by vw but the second I'm waiting on a response but doesn't look promising...Its had the aftermarket cover over the timing belt however the sepentine belt (only 10,000kms old) still managed to get in behind the timing cover and destroy the head..

Love it! But not again
Fantastic vehicle to drive. More comfortable to drive than the other main competitors in that market that i drove. Pretty good on fuel. Out competed a hilux and patrol when i went off roading in northern nsw. however, capped price servicing is super expensive and im apprehensive when the warranty runs out as a few items have needed to be replaced and the cost was quite high, If i had my time again i would have gone a vehicle with cheaper servicing and parts (hilux). But i still think the amaroks the best to drive.

Amarok V6 Highline
I would like to share my experience about my second Volkswagen Amarok - a 2017 V6 Highline. This vehicle has now covered over 30K in eight months, a significant part of this towing our three tonne caravan. The V6 engine combined with the eight speed transmission has proven to be an amazing combination for hard work, providing effortless towing and excellent fuel consumption.
This vehicle has proved faultless, just as my previous four cylinder Amarok (50k and no warranty work). Steering, ride, cabin quietness and comfort astound me each ti...Read more

Best vehicle I have owned
Absolutely love the amarok, had it since new and now 3 years on. It feels like you are driving a car not a large 4x4. I have driven our work utes (hilux, ranger and navara) and they feel exactly like work utes. The amarok feels very refined all round and have not had any issues with it. Even without a low range box, the automatic gearbox was great on the beach, even in very soft and powdery sand. Also comes with an E locker standard which is very handy when four wheel driving. I would definitely buy another but I think I will hold on to mine for a very long time.

Oil consumption
The vehicle it self is a good Ute my concern is the amount of oil they use A new car should not use this amount of oil 2 litres of oil 8000k vw tell you it acceptable to use 500 ml every 1000k crap they should for a new car this is not acceptable I also have a ticking noise in motor I have in contact with dealer with no response

Best truck on the market
After reading those bad reviews about the amarok i almost changed my mind buying one. I still bought one cause i love the look of it and its my 5th vw car i heard a lot of people extremely happy with the brand and some hate it. Is it a gamble to buy one? I m not sure but for me its a very affordable german car with no issues and every cars have problems i dont think parts are too hard to find probably not as easy as an hilux but i guess its the price to stand out in the crowd! Very happy with mine. If you like it buy it!

Love it!!
Purchased new on March 2012. Have done 98000 km. We have towed a camper trailer numerous times with no issues.
Have been towing a horse float for 3 years now and no issues with weight. Perfect.
Also use it to tow an arena rake in our horse arena. Has BFG All Terrain Ko2s fitted which perform and look awesome and give the Rok an awesome presence.
Regularly serviced at Southside VW. Service cost isn't too bad and always have the log book service done for peace of mind. Due for timing belt service @105000km and have been warned it will be a lit...Read more

Dpf problems
Thought it was the best. Car just got towed because apparently once a month you need to take it on a freeway and drive for 30mins @100km/h. Because that's so easy to do in Sydney apparently. Really annoyed me when they looked at u in service centre like u were in the wrong.

Unless you have deep pockets avoid.
My brother went out and got sucked into buying a 2015 Amarok bi turbo demonstrator money pit.
Now Im always sceptical about people car reviews because you dont know how bad people treat the vehicle or if they actually service it or drive it thru the ocean for example

Let down by lack of customer service
Started out great but after a few thousand k's it started using oil, approx 2 litres per 5,000k's, now I have a loud ticking noise coming from the engine.
It has 11,000k's on the clock now, it is still using oil and the dealership are not interested in looking at the ticking noise coming from the motor.
I have had a bad experience with VW in the past and swore I would never buy another one - I can't believe I went and bought another one of their faulty vehicles!!!

VW Amarok Transmissions..BEWARE
The positives: You do get good fuel mileage for a big car but at the cost of stinking diesel fumes. As soon as you start the car you want to reverse it out of the garage asap otherwise they will stink up the garage and make its way inside quicksmart. We have to drive with the recirculation button on all the time to minimize the fumes.
Negatives: TRANSMISSION...Have done a transmission at 100K and for 11K a transmission it is a no brainer to steer clear!
HOT TIP... If you intend on buying one of these for towing even with a very light load do a pre-purchase test reversing up an incline and JUST LISTEN to the tranny/engine under no load (test drive) and then imagine what it would be like reversing with a trailer.

The future of 4x4 pickup trucks
I bought a new MY15 auto after test driving the then new mq triton. The amarok is at least half a generation ahead even its already 4 years old. I had a mn triton before this. The old triton was like a tractor comparing to the amarok. On the road the amarok drives like a large suv. No 4x4 pickup truck has ever come closed to the refinement and driving experience.
Of course I wasn't buying a 4x4 ute to cruise on the highway. I mod it up, bullbar, winch, lift, canopy, drawer systems, snorkels etc.... I made it a go anywhere tourer. I've been ...Read more
to many 4wd parks and NP: Jenowan, LC, swan gully, GHM, fraser..... Some people laughing it has no low range, too many electronics, Europeans reliability..... I can only pity them. They will never know 4wding can be such relaxing, comfortable and refined. I will never get out of my truck after a full day of fun with loosing bones or needing new set of hearing aids. With the absence of the low range.... It doesn't have one because it doesn't need one. The amarok will get up any hills the other 4wd can go with a low range. Or it will better most of them with the same setup (if someone has a 4inch lift +35inch tyres thats another story). People just need to grow on. This is the future of the 4wd and like the absence of manual gearboxes in many sports cars, eventually every 4wd will be made this way. Like every other car, this Amarok is not perfect. Even i have no problem going up n down the hills i still willing it has lower 1st gear (not a low range), better reversing, better 2nd row leg room, more storage space, bigger standard tyres (at least 1 inch smaller than it's size deserves), a bigger mirror that folds in a proper way....... I did hear some owners having problems, and so does the new Hilux...... Well as I'm so impressive with the amarok i bought another one as my work truck......Similar opinion? Amazing V6 Highline
I had to trade in my much loved 2 litre Amarok, it was a manual, my left knee was giving me what'o so I traded it for this v6 Auto Highline Amarok with 3500 towing capacity.
A couple of months in, I totally love this car with the V6 diesel 8 speed auto it drives amazing, the guys at Duttons were great, I drove the Ranger and BT50 all on the same day, I'm really happy with my choice and glad I paid the extra to have the space, power and comfort. Towing is sensational!!
If you're considering a twin cab do yourself a favour and drive one of these, in my opinion it leaves the other twin cabs hand down,

So far appears to be a good car
Drives and rides well even with a big load, cant hardly tell its there !. Comfortable enough & Smooth, roomy & enough power. Gearing is good. Tyre wear appears negligent after 22000Kms, so really good in that regard. Though for $60K, would have liked to have a few more modern aids such as blind spot warning side mirrors a few other bits and bobs.

Just fine
Owned my 2015 4x2 Amarok for just on 2 years now and have done 55,000kms. This is my work work car however it has also done over 10,000kms towing our 2.5t caravan as well. To date not 1 single issue to report and fuel economy is great, at times down to 6.5 litres per 100 to and from work. The van has been towed in 40 degree temps and the Amarok still doesn’t complain, even when oil temp hits around 125. Very comfy even for bottom of the range.

Love/Hate relationship
Purchased my 2013 new, after taking receipt of it LH door glass came off the runner.
Within a couple of weeks the engine light came on, had to replace the dipstick as it was sending incorrect messages to the ecu.
O2 sensor failed,
exhaust sensor failed twice,
EGR lines replaced due to carbon build up,
complete replacement of fuel injectors,
complete new set of door seals and adjustment of doors.
Due to all the problems and my wife being a bit of a pit bull we managed to get VW to give us a year of extended warranty which has now ru...Read more

How many people out there have an v6 amarok that gets very hot towing caravans in the 2-3 ton range. This only occurs on fairly steep climbs but can go from normal (about 90) to 110 to 115 in about one minute. the ambient temperature seems to have minimal effect on this problem. I have had the company line from vw stating the bull-bar is the issue. Other v6 amaroks with bull-bars l know of have never had any issues towing

I have not had any water temperature problems towing a 2.4 tonne van 90 constantly
I've had the exact same problem with our 2017 V6 ultimate. The water temperature will rise to 100-105 degrees, but the oil temperature rises to over 130 degrees. It seems to happen when transmission drops back to 7th on a climb. When I've had a little more speed, kept in 8th and allowed it to slow up a climb [not burying the foot], it doesn't rise. VW have checked it and said it is all ok. I know the TDi 580 has a larger cooling system, but am also aware that the 550 doesn't have a trans oil cooler [and the trans is a weak link]. Am looking at fitting an aftermarket cooler.
