AVOID!!
Brand new amarok with 3 weeks of ownership starts to develop issue of gearbox. The car nudge when downshift from 3rd to 2nd gear. Took it back to vw service and was told it is completely normal. It is the way it is and every amarok is like this. I was also told that the gearbox decouple to save fuel and co2. What a load of crap and what i get from it is "this is a piece of junk". The dealer fail to fix the problem and i am left with a box of scrap metal.

Clutch gone at 60,000km - not covered by warranty. Mult-V belt went at 80,000km on NYE at Fraser Is and because of a known design flaw it destroyed the engine. We had to fight to get the engine fixed and not pay a $10k repair bill. VW seem to know about the problems with the Amarok's but try to cover it anyway instead of doing a recall.

Awesome all round, highway comfort A+, off road comfort & capabilities A+, towing A+
Wouldn't go to anything else at all ever (Unless a bad experience comes up)
8 speed auto is amazing, no low range, off road is perfect, 4 Motion in sand is the best!
On road handling & comfort is car like, hardly think you are in a ute.
Dirt roads are awesome, hangs on like a gecko.
Lacks a bit of grunt at the top end, but it's not a sports car.
Only ute to fit a full size pallet in the tub between wheel arches and 1T! Perfect for the workers then a perfect vehicle for weekend play!!!
Would like a V6 and have test driven one, but can't justify the price yet.

VW 2011AMAROK 2ltr PROBLEMS
Great dual cab to drive, ergonomics re, drivers position and storage/ access to everything is excellent even tho window wipers and indicators arms are opposite to what we are use to here in Australia... pity VW didnt adapt to Aust market....
2.0 Engine- Very economical if you arent towing ... Having towed a caravan 2000kg ( which is not very heavy by todays standards ) i found the 2.0 diesel economy to increase dramatically...You cant replace cubic inches for true power... This is why VW has gone to the v6 motor..
Reliability- Had multiple ...Read more

Amorak V6 - Towing capacity
Hi. We seriously considered the Amarok Dual Cab V6 diesel as our next vehicle. It had everything we needed except, most surprisingly, was the towing capacity. This is set at 3000 kg when most competitors in the class have 3500 kg as their limit. With most common caravans these days with toilets & showers on board, have ATM (aggregate trailer mass) in excess of 3000 kg it is surprising to see the VW limit. There must be a valid reason for the VW Amarok limit. It certainly doesn't appear to be within the suspension design because I am advised tha...Read more
t the maximum tow ball down load of 350 kg does not affect the payload limit. Maybe it's in the cooling system. I am also told this applies only to Australia with 3500 kg in other countries. It would be interesting to know if there is a modification available to overcome this issue. No doubt, VW are the "losers" with sales to the Australian "grey nomad" limited. Cheers.Similar opinion? 2011 Amarok serpentine belt
Loved the car. It ticked a lot of boxes. Interior roomy. Comfy to drive. Anyone looking to buy a 2011 model. Beware. An internet search will reveal problems with the serpentine belt which can cause engine failure. If the belt frays or breaks you could be up for a possible 14k repair. PS: There is no warning, no alarms, the car just stops on a straight road.

EGR Coolant problem
I brought my Amarok second hand at three years old, 20k miles. I've had it a year, now on 60k miles, its had two vw services as scheduled. red engine temperature light now comes on, i took it to the dealer and been advised the egr cooler is failing. VW will not contribute anything towards it and have the attitude that i should expect cars to break after 3 years. i brought a vw for a quality reliable car/van, this is not it.

Super ride and handling feel safe on the road at all timeslot
I have a 2012 high line 6sp manual very happy with the ride handling and the space in the cabin 198cm does not GI well in most Ute's, had many a 4x4 over 50 years this one feels tight on dirt and bitumen roads no probs with any mechanical issues a super vehicle all round

Great, but better in automatic
Great vehicle and I love driving it, very stable, comfortable and spacious. However having driven the automatic a bit as well now, I would recommend it instead of the manual for every purpose I can think of. I also suggest you get a razorback steel canopy to go with it if you want a reliable, high quality canopy with central locking.

Love this Vehicle
We bought this Ute a month ago and cannot fault it. The best ute we have ever owned and love the way it thinks for itself. Its fuel economy is unbelievable and even more economic than the Mazda 2 Petrol car that we own. The only negative comment I have it that it was fitted with the wrong headlight switch and I could not turn on the foglights. This was soon rectified by the dealer. It is one heck of a smart car. I love its sensors when it comes to parking. The reversing camera screen could have been a bit bigger too. The stereo is fantastic Great Vehicle

great car, very comfortable, not always reliable .
I have owned this car for 5 years, it has had its issues but besides that I really like this car. It is disappointing that there is a recurring problem with the air con compressor ( 6 so far ) but the dealer ship is very good about it and can do the replace meant in half a day now, which is very convenient as I am 3hrs drive away. I have a new motor due to the timing belt cover issue. Was provided with a replace meant ute while this was being done. The manual gearbox is very smooth and changes nicely except in the cold weather first thing in th...Read more
e morning. Double clutching helps while its cold . Selecting reverse is always a challenge, something to do with the gate but I work with it each time and get there in time. The car has now done just over 200,000 and still feels like new. have driven it to Perth and back ( the scenic way ) and it was fantastic. Have taken it into the snowy mountains and it is brilliant . Leaves my Landcover discovery for dead . Fuel economy is okay but I do have a lot of bits and pieces hanging off it it to reduce its aero dynamics . I have upgraded the rear suspension because i constantly carry 400kg plus on the back plus tow 2.5t on a trailer. It does it well but the bigs hills give it a work out. Biggest disappointment is the poor standard of electronics in terms of radio, blue tooth, gps. ( i.e. lack of it ). In my view its a safety issue and should not be underestimated in its priority . I have been provided with a loan car recently for servicing and warranty issues and the loan car has been the 8 spd Amarok. its even better than my manual and am considering getting one to replace it .Similar opinion? "Amarok" The Benchmark!
There are Utes and then, there is the Amarok! Since its release all ute makers use it to say "how can we better the Amarok?"
The Amarok has rock solid reliability, the only V6 available in its class, meticulous build quality. Just look under the machine. You will notice the thick, strengthened chassis, unlike any other ute on the market for the price, even stronger then the unbreakable Hilux! The engine is tried & tested (bugs ironed out) for many years now, unlike the new Hilux. Running costs are amazing! The dealer included 3years FREE SERVICING. What more could you ask?
The Amarok indeed Drives like a refined, purpose built, enduring workhorse!
No wonder the Amarok IS, "The Benchmark!"

Solid Road Presence
Love this vehicle, big road presence and heaps of space for humans and cargo.
Basic but comfortable inside, the best part being smooth flooring that just wipes clean, the cloth upholstery is a tad thin and has started to rub and pill on the high use seats, stains won't come out easily, but the excellent cup holder is nice and secure, so hopefully won't be an issue, not a good car for kids spilling stuff as it would look grotty very quickly.
Easy to keep looking flash, we got paint protection which has made a big difference to dust adhering a...Read more

and rectified under warranty, the VW dealer in Mildura was fantastic and David at Duttons in Mt Barker has been brilliant, they have all had my best interest at heart. The 4 cylinder 2 ltr bi turbo drives like a cut snake I have the 6 speed manual and it goes every where, mostly don't even have to use the diff lock and we have some pretty big hills here and it gets boggy but this ute pulls out of everything - with standard wheels and tyres !! I tow a 1 and half ton camper trailer up hill and down dale, on and off road, the fuel economy does increase to around 14 ltr/100 km in a head wind, my 200 series land cruiser uses 18ltr/100km with the same trailer and thats a V8 twin turbo diesel. It seems that a few of you are having issues and I'm sorry to hear that, I strongly believe it seems to happen to all makes of new cars these days regardless of make. I am an old VW mechanic and diesel engineer and in all honesty weather cars were made here or overseas there have always been problematic vehicles, especially if people haven't looked after them, I still believe that a vehicle should be serviced every 5000km with a filter changes, you'll spot any issues sooner and minimise any damage especially when you have a turbo, sure it costs, but prevention is better than cure. I'd rather have a small up front cost than costly repairs in the end!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Very happy customer
Fantastic ride, great economy 8.4l/100. I have only had the vehicle fir six weeks but couldn't be happier. I have owned multiple 4WD & utes but this one beats all of them for comfort and versitility. I purchased the vehicle as a run iut drmo model and saved heaps. Took it offroad on the beach and it handled it perfectly. Totally recommend this truck.

Caught Fire no apparent reason
Our Amarok was only 21 months old regularly serviced well maintained. It caught fire within the engine bay it was a matter of Seconds before it engulfed the cabin coming through the drivers side foot-well, Ballarat Dealer will not return calls nor enter into any conversation, extremely poor attitude at Volkswagen.

Out of date Satellite Nav System
Nice Car. We have been to the dealer and VW and like everyone these days they want your money but do not want to know about any issues. One would have thought you would get the most up to date Sat Nav system when you bought a new car but it's not true. All business think of saving money and the Sat Nav system is so old at least over 3 years it doesn't even have the main Highway upgrade and takes you off the highway and through towns and traffic. Yes VW has a new upgrade but you have to pay for it. One would think VW would want to keep customers happy for repeat business but once a great wealthy man said there is nothing more important than MONEY. Not true. Unhappy Customer.

Amaroks are crap
I have owned my amarok for 2.5 years, brought it near new at 47000 k on the clock, had nothing but trouble with it, egr other problem, total cost me 7000 to repair, then the big one the drive belts broke 10000 plus is VW quote totally destroyed the engine, VW said timing is out, used enging 6500 then have to pay 1500 plus to get the mechanic to put it in, that is almost half price to what VW were going to charge me, there is a common design fault in the drive belts issue, read the review on them, there are loads of people out there like me with...Read more
the same issue, Don't buy them, they look great, and drive great when they are working, but costly to repair when they are not working, Do your home work on them before you sign on the dotted line. There Should Be a Class Acton on them about the issue, VW don't care about you, They are there is make as much money as they can that it.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Only looks good ! Worst car ever
I don't want to drive it out of town anymore as 3 time out of 5 I'll need tow back. Loss of power... Over $10k of bills and still same issue... Between EGR valve, EGR cooler, auxilliary water pump, timing belt, head gasket... Half of the engine is brand new and still have the same loss of power engine light coming on dash. Had it for not even a year, car has spent over three month in mechanical. Madness i just want to put that car in wreck.

How many people out there have an v6 amarok that gets very hot towing caravans in the 2-3 ton range. This only occurs on fairly steep climbs but can go from normal (about 90) to 110 to 115 in about one minute. the ambient temperature seems to have minimal effect on this problem. I have had the company line from vw stating the bull-bar is the issue. Other v6 amaroks with bull-bars l know of have never had any issues towing

I have not had any water temperature problems towing a 2.4 tonne van 90 constantly
I've had the exact same problem with our 2017 V6 ultimate. The water temperature will rise to 100-105 degrees, but the oil temperature rises to over 130 degrees. It seems to happen when transmission drops back to 7th on a climb. When I've had a little more speed, kept in 8th and allowed it to slow up a climb [not burying the foot], it doesn't rise. VW have checked it and said it is all ok. I know the TDi 580 has a larger cooling system, but am also aware that the 550 doesn't have a trans oil cooler [and the trans is a weak link]. Am looking at fitting an aftermarket cooler.
