Great little gadget
Purchased this for my partner for Christmas. Was significantly cheaper than the google home with a screen equivalent. Cannot fault it! Does everything you’d expect from a home service information system. Can even hook up the ring doorbell and watch YouTube.
Purchased in December 2021 at JB Hi-Fi for $150.00.

Good for smart home control
Not so good as a digital assistant, google is much better. Most questions result in a “i don’t know that one”. Used in conjunction with a Vera hub and Sonos it’s a decent smart device controller (although the lack of grouping capabilities for sonos is frustrating)

Very very good at getting things wrong.
This is not a review of the AI, although if it was the AI would also get one star. This is a review of the operating system and the hardware.
The Echo Show 5 promising many things but is unable to deliver even basic functions without an error rate that makes it's usefulness practically non existent.
Some things the hardware would easily be capable of but cannot do due to the operating system include;

ll quickly find that this is a feature that has been requested since it was introduced yet has failed to materialize. The Echo Show 5 still cannot be left on a simple clock display and must display other things users do not wish to see with no way to turn off the suggestions to "Ask Alexa" for some random stupid thing that you would only ask as a joke. 2. It cannot leave a light switch displayed. Ask Alexa to turn on or off the light and if she is successful she will display a control switch and dimmer slide. It's not perfect (no color control) but it's good to have because instead of asking her to do 3 things (turn on the light 100% white) and risk her not understanding, i can just ask her 2 things (lights on,white) and then adjust the brightness with the slider. So I think 'great, maybe i can at least use this screen thing as a light switch'?! Nope, no can do. If you ask Alexa to display the light switch controls she is clueless, and that's the general theme here.
