2008 E70 X5 3.0sd
Sports Diesel aptly describes this car, with the 3.0l twin turbo diesel capable of propelling the big car smoothly with sports-car like performance. Annual service costs are less than our 2004 Nissan Navara and comparable with our 2007 Suzuki SX4 but the level of dealer service leaves the other 2 marques cold. Averages 8.0l/100km on a long trip and we get around 9.0l/100km on hilly drives (80%rural/20%urban).
Plenty of room, solid and sure footed. We have owned over 20 vehicles from different makers over the years and this one is undisputedly ...Read more

2006 X5 E53 3.0d Sports
Have owned this car for 6 years
Currently had 244,000k's on the clock.
Its been a fantastic vehicle (especially when compared to a previously owned Range Rover).
Rock Solid road holding, Safe, Economical, seats 5 in comfort, tows, good storage, stylish, still turns heads.
Vehicle is relatively trouble free, with only small and minor issues (as with any car)
Ours has the radio module fail (a common fault, $145 fix)
OEM Battery lasted 8 years
Really i have nothing to complain about this vehicle and don't want to part with it.
As i have no idea what i'd buy next, apart from a newer version.
If you service it when required it will give you years of trouble free motoring.

BMW X5 30D 2011
We love this stylish SUV, look better than the ML or the RRS we had considered.
Driving was joyful, the cargo space was large, and I can leave the HUD now.
The 30d diesel was very powerful, 8 Speed gearbox made it run very smooth, you won't notice this is a car weighing 2 tons.

2003 3.0d, purchased new, now showing 365000 Klm.
A country car that does at least 100k at each start up. Got 100,000 Ks out of first set of Michelins, replaced battery after 8 yrs. new CV boots at same time. Replaced expansion tank and cap 18 months ago. Did replace the drivers door actuator a couple of years ago. Have replaced two of the fuel delivery pumps, the one in the tank and the inline one, around $600 each event. Have not serviced the A/C, which must be a record. This car has been a gem, with service costs lower than our 08 Navara, and always taken it to the 25000K interval.
Car still looks fantastic, but it is time to update am looking at a 2013 e70. Can only hope for more of the same. Anyone have poor result from the 013 version?

BMW X5 E53 3.0 D 2006
We recently purchased a 2006 X5 and are delighted. Definitely the Ultimate Driving Experience. A dream to drive. Supremely solid and stylish. Diesel is very economical. Amazing acoustics..... it makes us smile every time. If on going costs are a concern find a good mechanic that has appropriate BMW equipment and many $$$$$'s will be saved. Best to get oil change every 7,000 kms or so for maximum protection
The X5 is very thoughtfully designed and definitely sets the benchmark for other luxury car makers to follow.

Love this car
I used to have this car and I still miss it. Very comfortable and smooth drive. Good leg space and ultimate car for the family. Fantastic shockers and mid blowing for long drives. Recommended to everyone - don't think just buy. Maintenance is expensive but you know you need to maintain.

Good Car
I bought mine new in 2003, 3.0 litre petrol
Repairs so far: alternator $700, air conditioner compressor $1200, CV Boots (3 times) $600, Rocker cover gasket $240, door actuator $400, Radiator expansion tank/thermostat $500
Still using the original battery. Always used Michelin tyres 235/65/17 can be found for $250 a corner.
It still drives great after 11 years. No squeaks or rattles.
I'll probably buy a 3 litre diesel next time
I like the way it drives.
Servicing can be expensive

Purchased a demo 2013 BMW X535i with all the options in October 2013. Car is powerful when you want it to be and economical when on the highways. Interior quality is far superior to the ML range Mercs and mechanically I think better than the Land Rover/Range Rover family. Driving is smooth and consistent in all weather and road types.
I would highly recommend the X5 for anyone looking to enter the prestige car market without spending a fortune.
I was able to get a 3 year servicing package thrown in on the deal which has been great. My only c...Read more

Engine Problems After 100k KMs.
Bought a 2007 3.5D about a year ago. We bought it at 80,000kms and it was fine. We had a log book with the car so we knew it was well looked after. However after about 6 months, the problems started appearing. The engine started leaking oil. We took it to a mechanic and they said it was due to the rubber seals being worn out and was a typical BMW problem. We spent around 1k on this and the oil leaks stopped. A few weeks later, the engine sounded different and turned out it needed another piece of rubber replaced. You'd think with the amount of money one spends on a BMW, they would spend more money on rubber!
Good brand
Engine bad build

X5 broken
My BMW X5 3.0 executive 2007 was ok for the first 2 years but then problems began. It has always been BMW serviced and up until 2013 has done only 70,000Km mainly on the school run. Since then, it has been towed 6 times with batteries being replaced twice then upgraded, coolant leaks, suspension strut replacements, software upgrades then downgrades just to mention a few things costing up to $10k, now there is catastrophic suspension failure costing over $7k, and the service department at BMW has run out of reasons/excuses, as has BMW Australia...Read more

Brilliant with the extra twin turbo grant !
Just upgraded from a 2005 3.0D, to a 2010 3.5D.... Man what a difference. Sensational handling and performance with all the expected BMW points of luxury.... Well, worth the wait in trying to find a twin turbo option, as what tops it all off...is the hidden beast.... that lives within..
Still relatively hefty... As a second hand vehicle.

Does what is advertised except fuel economy
Bought the car brand new in Jan 2011, excellent build quality, handling awesome for this type of car, performance ok for standard diesel, features outstanding including nav package, hud, major service around $950, excellent service at dealer, stores all cds on car hard drive which is easy to navigate and maintains favourites
Handling, build quality, music hard drive and playlists
Unable to get any where near detailed fuel economy of 7.8l/100 best mid 8's

I have just realised that we have had our X5 now for a year and we love it!
We traded our 2000 Honda CRV in on it and it besides the first week driving it home and back to the dealer to work out that it had a faulty ABS module, it has been brilliant. That first week was horrid and exhausting, but thankfully covered under warranty and they were finally able to work out what was wrong with it. (it was throwing up so many errors, it took several trips to work out what the actual error was)
For reference, the X5 forums on-line are great. Th...Read more
ey told me what he problem was days before the dealer found it. The dealer didn't want my Opinion though :) It had done 120'000 Km's when we bought it and admittedly, we haven't added too many more with mostly city driving, but we drive it every day and we've had it fully serviced once so far at Balmain's Prestige Autos after a recommendation from a friend and because they're local to us - they are brilliant btw and will continue to get our business - Nothing major to report besides some leaking power steering hoses. It wasn't a cheap service, but we were prepared for it because it is a big BMW 4WD. The big service also gave us peace of mind that the car was in fact a good one. The first week of hassles scared me off it a bit, so we had it serviced pretty close to having purchased it and have had no problems since. Having it serviced also gave us great peace of mind and faith in the car, so even if it had cost double the price, it still would have been worth it.3 comments

We now have a Toyota Kluger which is brilliant, big, has 7 seats, Japanese and is cheap to fix with capped price servicing. I miss driving the X5 like you wouldn't believe, but we opted to buy a new house, so affording expensive servicing is off the list at the moment. Selling it wasn't fun as there was literally no interest in weeks. I opted to trade it in and was lucky to get $12,000 for it and later saw it for sale at another dealer for $15,000.Similar opinion? The only other choice close to the driving pleasure and joy of ownership would be the Porsche Cayenne but the X5 ticks all the boxes for me. If I was to buy another X5 first choice would be the latest 35i and second would be the 40di. You just can't beat the refinement and the feel of luxury in a smooth BMW six cylinder petrol engine. The 40di with the cheaper running cost is a favorite for the Australian outback.

t the dealer assured me that it was normal for some of the high pressure hoses to "sweat a little" and that there is no need for concern at this point in time at 60,000Kms. I will have owned this vehicle 5yrs in May 2012 and I have concerns about certain oils and fluids that are meant to be for the "life of the vehicle". Since I have decided to keep the vehicle for "life" I will not be gambling with relatively cheap fluids like transmission fluid, diff oils and power steering fluid and will be taking it in for service to have them replace all, on the fifth anniversary. Happy to report that I have been able to successfully fix the cargo blind rattle with a 12mm thick neoprene foam (left over from my garage door) placed in the channels(rather than the rubbers that I had tried before). It has transformed it back to being the luxury $100K+ vehicle that it is, than what it had been perceived to have become (a rattly old car, even though the rattle was there from the beginning, it had just gotten worse overtime) because of the the "neglect" of the dealer who was not able to make any modifications to the vehicle that was outside of the manufacturer's specifications, under warranty. Obviously it is too much to expect when it comes to common sense solutions when you are dealing with the "food chain"! Another satisfying outcome is the upgrade of my tyres to the Yokohama ADVAN, not run flats (RF) but I live is hope that in the near five years that I have had the run flats I did not once have an occasion that I could truly say thank goodness for my run flats, although it did give me the confidence to attempt the 290km of lake Eyre wilderness when I was reading the "big" road sign at the start of the journey that read amongst other things, take at least two spare tyres (I had a false sense of confidence, "no problems I have four"). The ADVAN are noticeably a little nosier than the Bridgestones run flats but I won't have it any other way. It is still a firm ride but not harsh like with the Bridgestone RF. I squeezed 295/45-19 on the rear and 285/45-19 on the front, onto the same original staggered rims 9Jx19 and 10Jx19. I run tyre pressures of 28psi(cold) front and 25psi(cold) rear (around town and occasional motor way) and 34psi and 32 psi (long trips). No issues with traction system on the vehicle or speedo reading or fouling guards/suspension components. If anything the speedo reads more accurate with these slightly larger rolling diameters, so you will need to be more careful in the 40Kph and 50Kph speed zones, as you will no longer have the "luxury" of the "safety buffer" built into most cars speedometers, as they all read slightly higher than the actual speed you are travelling. The benefits I have gained with these tyres are more precise steering, more grip and less abrupt changes in direction due to grooves or ruts on the road. I suspect that the tyre wear will be high but I expect at least the same milage as the original Bridgestone's, 50,000km on the rear and 60,000km on the front and considering I have performance gains and yes they look good, I'm very happy! With a little TLC I am hoping that this BMW will be the investment I thought it will be when I decided to spend over a hundred big ones. So far so good and fingers crossed!fabulas car just bought 1 and cost 160000 brand new so cheap

I started my business 20 years ago and was able to purchase my first pre-owned 318i BMW ($34,000) from Auto Classic in Perth in 2006. My business improved so in 2008 I was able to upgrade to a used X5 4.8 ($104,000) from the same dealer, which I kept that for a further two years. could purchase my very first new BMW for my 40th birthday. In December last year (2010) I splashed out and purchased a brand new X5 4.0 Diesel Twin Turbo X-Drive 7-seater (6 in my family) for $148,000. Auto Classic had been messing me around with prices and not returning calls, so I purchased it from Coastline BMW in Queensland on a 4 year lease with the plan for upgrading to the new model every 4 years. It was custom built for me and arrived at my door in December 2010. My brother also purchased a BMW just prior on my recommendation. About 10 weeks after my new car arrived, on 14/2/11,whilst driving down the freeway it lost power and dropped down to about 80kmph and would not go any faster. Messages came up saying ‘engine fault’ etc and to get it to my nearest BMW dealer. So I drove it slowly to Auto Classic in Perth. They were fully booked when I arrived and suggested I brought it back the following day, so I had to drive it home and back again the next day. So the next morning, 15/2/11 I brought it back and they gave me a sedan 320i to use which did not fit my family. I asked if I would have to pay for the use of the sedan (as in the past they had made me pay around $90 per day for borrow a sedan whilst my car, which I purchased from themwas being attended to!). They called me later and said that they THINK the problem is a sensor, so I would have to wait another day or so for it to arrive. But on the Friday 18/2/11, they called me in the afternoon to advise that replacing the sensor did not work and they don’t know what is wrong with the brand new ($150,000) vehicle.2 comments

After 9 years with my 4.6is, I can still say its the best car I have ever owned
I have been driving my 2003 4.6is now for 9 years and let me tell you it just gets better with age!
I have had no issues with the vehicle at all. Admitedly the 4.6 transmission has that rough downshift between 2nd and 1st but im at 160k now on the same transmission and its got a lot left in it yet!
A very well built fantastic car. Yes it costs a bit to service and maintain but I paid $162,000 for mine in 2003 - I was expecting high maintenance costs.
But, in reality - I would tell anyone to buy an X5 4.6is.
It seems I am the minority; maybe the "is" model has less problems than the lower models.
Reliability, V8 sound, The fact I have owned the vehicle 9 years and I still never stop smiling when I look at it

Excellent SUV, but with Niggles
Just replaced by E240 estate Benz with a X5 3.0i (2006). Bought from BMW from their Premier Selection stock. Drove it back home (700km) and got a feel for the car. The car I bought has Sat/Nav, anti-dazzle mirrors, climate control, reversing mirrors, park sensors front and back, sunroof, electric seats and has the sports package. The overall impression is an excellent SUV that handles well with some niggles. However, the premium selection gives the purchaser a warranty that's like a new-car factory warranty for 12 months (longer for additio...Read more
nal money), so hopefully these niggles will be fixed. So let's get to it... Drive - the car drives well. The sports package must do something to the suspension though, because while handling is better than I expected, you feel just about every bump on the road. Although only a six pot engine, still gives you plenty of go and overtaking power. The engine doesn't sound as "refined" as I expected on acceleration, but quiet at speed and stopping. Handling - is surprisingly good. This is because of the stability control, all wheel drive (this model had the variable 4 wheel drive to each wheel). Little bit of body roll compared to, say, a 5 series BMW, but compared to the normal SUV (or car), quite tight. Interior - black leather. Seats quite comfortable, and in the memory function with the front electric seats means finding and keeping a good configuration is easy. Mirrors are meant to fold in, but on mine they fold in and then out... this will no doubt be a warranty job. I've read the electrics of the car can be problematic, and in my car (so far) this problem plus an occasional crackling from the speakers off the mirrors on bumps have been the only two electrical problems. The climate control works well, and the sat/nav + onboard computer, although the E53 generation, is easy to use and guided me home. One complaint is to update the sat/nav software costs $400 -- and if you want to keep your premium selection warranty you'll have to upgrade it the BMW way. Still, if you're buying a BMW and you're worried about $400 for a sat/nav upgrade, then you've bought the wrong car.3 comments

Worst car I have ever owned
In my 32 years of motoring, this motor vehicle has been without doubt the most unreliable and expensive car to service I have ever owned.
According to my mechanic(who services mainly European cars)BMW cars are notorius for having major mechanical problems once it reaches 100000km.
These problems are:
Power steering oil leaks
Numerous oil leaks from different section of the engine ie.rocker cover, sump, front seals
Cooling system issues
All of the problems are expensive to repair. As an example the oil leaks ended up costing $6435.while all the components and labour for the cooling system cost $3984.

Bad
Overall a very expensive vehicle, to purchase and to maintain. Poor fuel economy, always computer and tyre problems. Everything is so expensive to replace. Not worth the money just to sit and drive a "nice car"
Powerful car, great for towing, very good safety rating. Good paintwork never seems to scratch
Suspension so bad, so bumpy and noisy in the back seat, poor fuel economy in petrol model, tyres wear so fast and are bloody expensive, computer features are so confusing to use, car doors so heavy, not enough boot space, everything is so damn expensive to fix, service costs ridiculous

I reported this to BMW and they changed the glow plugs but could not identify the cause of the squealing . I expected this engine to last at least 300,000 kms if not more.
