Absorbs water.
I applied 3 x coats to a bathroom bench as advised by Bunnings. This is probably the big mistake. Any water splashes are absorbed into the bench after a little while. Not good for bathroom areas. Probably not the varnish - but wrong product for the wrong application. Please educate bunnigs staff on your products.
Purchased in January 2021 at Bunnings Warehouse for A$50.00.

Disappointing
I used Cabots's Benchtop Clear on an old table. I was meticulous in removing the old varnish so that not a trace of that remained. I followed all of the instructions for Cabot's Benchtop Clear allowing correct drying time between coats and applied three coats. The table always felt sticky and the coating began to lift off in the high use end of the table. In the past we had always used a raffia mat under any hot pot put on the table without any trouble. With the new Cabot's product using only one mat on the table under a hot pot the surface bec...Read more
ame damp and sticky. And even when using two mats under a hot pot the table felt sticky. So it is not very heat resistant. After 10 months the table looked quite bad as the surface was beginning to lift off. So now I have re-sanded the table and applied a turps based product. So I am sorry to say Cabot's Benchtop Clear didn't work out well for me in my circumstances.Purchased in February 2021.

Benchtop clear of use in a kitchen. Just let it cure for a few days.
I've applied the Cabot's Benchtop Clear to the sanded wooden surfaces in my kitchen, including around the sink area with 4 coats, long time drying in between.
If you read other reviews below it shows the problem with white staining has been experienced by many who have used the product. It is misleading to find a tick for Food Safety on the tin. Unfortunately I only found out the problem with staining and apparently not being waterproof, but water resistant, after I experienced the same. I've received an explanation from Cabots and after curing for a few days, no more problems.
Purchased in October 2021 at Bunnings Warehouse.

Hi Annette,
I responded to your question earlier this morning. Yes, you are correct, the Benchtop Clear is not a water proof coating which means we don't recommend using this coating on any areas that will be fully submerged in water. ... Read more
When the Benchtop Clear is fully cured, it will be water resistant and will also be resistant to chemicals, oils and heat resistant up to 100 degrees. Like I mentioned in your initial question that the water marks you are seeing at this present time may be because the coating has not fully cured yet, which is a normal characteristic with water based coatings. However, I do suggest you give our Technical Team a call on 1800 011 006. We would like to ask you a few further questions to ensure that this is the case. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST. Team Cabot'sHi Cabot Team
thank you for your advice. I've left the bench for a few days and it now looks perfect. No water marks now. That's a relief. May be you should state your advice on the tin, so future... Read more

Great product
This is fast drying low odour and a great product for my kitchen bench as it is food safe. I applied 3 coats in one day as it is quick drying. Only advice I would give is use a good quality brush (as it is thin product and dries quickly) in order to maintain consistency of brushwork. I usually hate the smell of treating wood as it gives me a headache but this had little to no odour at all

How long after last coat can I put my microwave ect on the bench with out damaging the work I just completed?

Leah P.Cabot's
Hi Joe,
You will be able to replace things like your microwave after 7 days. The coating would have dried enough by then without damaging the coating, it is still a good idea to place things onto the bench rather than drag - just to help minimise the risk.
We recommend allowing at least 4 weeks before the coating comes into direct contact with food.

We have a 100+ year old wooden house. Doors, architraves etc Baltic pine. We love the warm feeling of the wood and wish to try our kitchen benchtop in the wood. Yes I realise its a soft wood and we don't really want a varnish finish. Any suggestions / advice, apart from don't use a soft wood.

I’ve used the Cabot‘s clear on my soft wood IKEA kitchen bench. Just follow the instructions on the tin. -especially the light sanding - I gave it an extra coat and am still happy with the result a year on. Ensure you let it cure for a couple of weeks and don’t leave any wet rags etc lying on it during that time. The finish looks very Natural and not at all varnished.

Can I use this product on a laminated benchtop?

I dont think so it would scratch off. I used it on raw/ sanded wood

Hi Victor,
Thanks for your question. Unfortunately no, the Benchtop Clear is not suitable for laminated surfaces as it will not adhere well.
